Q. I really love my Baratza Vario grinder, but hate the fact that it will lose all the programming if I have to unplug it. Is there a way to fix this?

A. This was definitely one of the biggest complaints around this grinder, and Baratza recently resolved it by releasing an upgraded display panel.

If you have a Baratza Vario grinder that was manufactured before March 2010 (so, basically everyone reading this), you can upgrade your display panel to one that has an integrated battery (so it will retain programming even if unplugged) and sleep mode functionality (so those pesky bright blue LED lights aren't glowing so brightly all time).

The upgrade is very easy to install, and you can watch a video here of Henry showing us the ropes. We also created this article with instructions on how to program the sleep mode.

Newer Baratza Vario models that ship with these displays as stock will be more expensive because of it. If you want to upgrade your current model, you can pick up the new display on the site for a cool $19.95.
