Description

Barista, the GameTM
Grande nonfat mocha with a single shot? Or tall soy cappuccino with a double-shot? Match the beverage shown on a roll of dice to make the perfect cup and win! But wait…other players can force you to spill your drink order, or they can change the drink order and mess up your hand! Or maybe a player is closer to finishing the drink order than you are and calls a Barista challenge. Barista is the best game of strategy and match-up fun you’ll ever play with an espresso cup.
  • Game contents: 56 cards, 4 dice, 20 coins, 1 coin bag and 1 espresso cup.
  • 2-4 players, 4 is better!
  • Ages 8 and up
OBJECT OF THE GAME:
The object of play is to match a coffee drink order. The coffee drink order is determined by rolling a set of 4 dice at the start of every round. Each player is a Barista competing to finish the drink order before anyone else. Players win tips by completing the drink order and by other twists and turns during the game. The Barista with the most tips at the end of the game wins.

GAME CONTENTS:
  • 1 Deck of 56 Playing Cards
  • 4 Drink Order Dice
  • 20 Barista Tokens
  • 1 Espresso Cup
THE DRINK ORDER DICE:
There are 4 black dice with sides that match specific playing cards. When rolled at the start of each round, the dice define the parts of the round’s initial coffee drink order. Drink orders are made up of 4 parts: type of drink; size; milk used and number of shots.

THE DECK OF CARDS:

5 different coffee cards:
  • Drink - Cappuccino, Mocha, or Latte
  • Size - Tall, Grande, or Short
  • Milk - Nonfat, Breve, or Soy
  • Shots - Single, Double, or Triple
  • Wild - Can represent any element of a specific coffee order
4 different types of action cards:
  • Roll - Roll one drink order die to attempt to change the drink order.
  • Change - Change one drink order die to match your cards.
  • Take - Take a card from an opponent.
  • Spill - Choose one opponent to ‘spill’ all his cards and draw 4 new ones.
2 bonus cards:
Collect tokens as instructed then draw a replacement card.

2 penalty cards:
Pay a token as instructed then draw a replacement card.

HOW TO PLAY:
  1. Pay out an equal number of tokens to all players. Set aside extras.
  2. Select a dealer to shuffle and deal 4 cards to each player. Place the remaining cards face down in the center of play.
  3. To determine the coffee drink order to be made in any round, the player to the left of the dealer places all 4 of the dice into the espresso cup and rolls them into the center of play. The espresso cup now becomes the tip jar.
  4. Once the drink order is determined by the roll of the dice, all players select the cards from their hands that match the drink order and lay them face down in front of them in their ‘drink stack’. Players with 2 cards that both match one of the dice can lay only one card face down and must keep the extra one in their hand. Players are not allowed to draw or discard any at this point.
  5. The player who rolled the dice is the first player to either draw a card (or play any bonus or penalty cards received with the deal and then draw a card).
  6. After drawing one card from the deck, the players must place any wild cards or cards (other than duplicates) matching the drink order into their drink stack. Players end their turn by discarding one card face up into the discard pile.
  7. If an action card is drawn, it must be immediately played and the player is allowed to complete the action on the card before the next player takes a turn.
  8. If an action card is played on the discard pile and the result of playing it is a change to the drink order, all players must pick up the card that no longer matches the drink order and return it to his/her hand (or discard it if it is their turn).
  9. Playing a TAKE card on the discard pile allows the player to choose an opponent to pick up the cards on her order stack and shuffle them into her hand. The opponent holds the 4 cards up so the player can’t see their values. The player who discarded the TAKE card now draws 1 card from the opponent’s hand and gives an unwanted card from his own hand to her. The taker is not allowed to return the same card he has just taken.
  10. Bonus or Penalty cards must be played immediately on drawing (or before drawing if part of a player’s initial deal). Tokens are paid or collected and a replacement card is drawn (if deck is not empty) to continue the player’s turn.
