Watch Gail discuss the features of the Giro D'Italia Giotto

Limited Edition Details

What is the Giro D'Italia?
100 years ago, Italian Luigi Ganna stood atop a podium and accepted the first Maglia Rosa -- the pink jersey that signified his victory in the first annual Giro D'Italia cycling race. Devised to increase the readership of a local Italian cycling newspaper, the Giro D'Italia has transformed into one of the greatest monuments in cycling: A 2,448km (1,521 mile) race throughout the Italian countryside that is as gorgeous as it is grueling. Held every year except during World Wars I & II, the race is one of the three Grand Tours and, along with the Tour de France and the World Cycling Championship, makes up the Triple Crown of cycling.

What is the Limited Edition Giro D'Italia Giotto?
In celebration of Ganna and the 91 others who have achieved this incredible feat, Rocket Espresso is releasing 100 limited-edition espresso machines, dubbed the Giro D'Italia Giotto. With all of the powerful functionality and superb performance of the traditional Giotto Premium Plus semi-automatic espresso machine, the Giro D'Italia Giotto features quintessential Italian styling, a Maglia Rosa-inspired pink manometer, individually numbered badges and the names of all 92 winners of the Giro D'Italia machine-engraved on the side. Additionally, each machine includes a copy of the June 1st edition of the pink Italian daily sports paper that started it all, La Gazzetta dello Sport, which celebrates the 100th anniversary of the race and its historic winner.

Why do these include a charitable contribution?
We decided that we wanted to make this about more than just another collector's item, so we'll be donating $1500 from each sale directly to Coffee Kids, a non-profit organization that funds community and educational projects that help to improve the overall standard of living for coffee growing families in Central America. Purchasers of this machine will receive a receipt in their name to use for tax purposes.

General Product Information

Simply the best? We think so! Rocket Espresso's (formerly ECM) Giotto Premium Plus is the pinnacle of the 'prosumer' class of semi-automatic espresso machines. Polished stainless steel, simple design, the E-61 brew group, powerful steaming capability and ideal espresso shots make the upgraded Giotto Premium Plus a nearly flawless conversion of form and function.

This newest iteration of the Rocket line features improvements to the drip tray, brew technology and steam wand and has easily the best fit an finish and quality craftsmanship of any machine we carry. This version also has the new 'engraved' metal Rocket and Giotto badges (prior models were silk screened).

Learn more about the Giotto Premium Plus:

Pros
  • Amazing Espresso - When we're making our morning espresso in the store, we turn to the Giotto because we know it will always make delicious shots
  • No Burn Wands - Internally insulated steam wand and water dispenser keep the casing cool so you won't burn your hands
  • Nickel Plated Boiler - Since nickel is more inert, you get the superior temperature regulation of a brass and copper boiler, without the concern of metallics leaching into your water

Cons
  • Small Drip Tray - The drip tray is on the tiny side, so it fills up quite easily; this could be a good thing, however, because then you'll rinse it more often instead of starting any microscopic planets
  • Loud Pump - Vibratory pumps can be a bit noisy but this is mostly isolated on the Giotto because of it's solid build quality that does not amplify the vibrations like other machines can
  • Water Dispenser Design - When you turn the water dispenser inwards, it obstructs the brew lever, which is only a minor annoyance

How it Works
Pull succulent shots of espresso by following these basic steps:
  1. Turn the espresso machine on; brewing temperature will likely be reached in about 10 minutes
  2. While you're waiting for the machine to warm up, you can grind and tamp your espresso in your portafilter
  3. When brew temperature is reached, lift the lever to pull some water through the brew group, warming up all internal components prior to pulling your shot
  4. Insert your portafilter and initiate the shot by lifting the lever
  5. Once your shot is complete, push the lever back down to end the shot and release pressure -- you'll end up with a dry puck for disposal
  6. If you're making a latte or cappuccino, feel free to steam your milk at any time; the heat exchange boiler facilitates simultaneous brew and steam
Care
For detailed care instructions, please refer to your machine's user manual. We recommend that you also incorporate the following into your cleaning routine:
  • Descale every 2 - 3 months. We recommend using Dezcal.
  • Clean the brew gasket with a cleaning brush daily
  • Soap out water tank and drip tray every few days
  • Optional: Perform backflush routine and clean the filter basket each week.
  • Keep the stainless steel casing shiny with a microfiber cloth
Features & Accessories
We call the Giotto Premium Plus 'prosumer' because of its extensive professional-class features.

Components & Functionality
  • Stainless Steel Case: Finely crafted polished AISI 304 stainless steel housing is beautiful and highly durable.
  • Nickel-Plated Boiler: The commercially-designed 1.8 liter, pure copper heat exchanger boiler has a brass end plate, which increases the thermal retention and steam power by about 40% in comparison to other boiler systems. The entire boiler unit is then nickel-plated, which doesn't react with or leach metals into the water -- it's also less likely to build up minerals so your Giotto will have less scale.
  • Professional-Class E-61 Brew Head: The legendary E-61 brew group features a solid, lead-free brass end plate that aids in thermal stability and heat retention.
  • Dual Pre-Infusion System: Mechanical pre-infusion system has a progressively working piston and static pre-infusion chamber, resulting in smooth coffee extraction and superior aroma, body and crema.
  • Vibratory Pump: Pump features a special device to eliminate backpressure from the boiler, preventing blocks.
  • Stainless Steel Nozzles: Steam wand with a 2-hole tip and hot water wand are internally insulated so you won't burn yourself on them after use.
  • Removable Cup Rack: You can pull off the cup rack to reduce the espresso machine's height.
  • Large, Easy-Access Water Reservoir: Easily access the 98 oz. water reservoir via the separate lid -- you won't have to take all the cups off the top of your espresso machine in order to refill it.
  • Low Water Sensor: Level control cuts the power circuit if water is low, with a microprocessor that automatically controls the level of the boiler and water reservoir. A low water level warning will let you know when you need to refill.
  • Generously Dimensioned: 20% higher volume (compared to other machines on the market) is paired with optimum thermosyphon system to quickly heat up and provide superior extraction.
Included Accessories
  • Commercial Portafilter Set: Full-size single and double portafilters with baskets.
  • Instruction Guide: Learn how to make the best espresso with your Giotto Premium Plus by following the included easy-to-follow training manual.

The Giotto Giro d'Italia is an object of beauty September 24, 2009
Reviewer: James B. from Chambersburg, PA United States
The engraved names of Giro winners and pink accents evoke an emotional tie to the hard work and achievement to be rewarded with your latest coffee creation. The well-designed packaging ensured a safe trip from Seattle to my home. Plug in, fill with water, flip the switch and your first espresso is brewing. Lift a handle, twist a knob and your cappuccino is ready. If you prefer the Espresso for dummies version, check out the online videos. Finding the right grind, tamp and frothing the milk, those are the learned skills that will develop in your apprenticeship as a barista wannabe. Operation of the Rocket has been flawless and the end product has been delicious. Have fun finding your preferred coffee beans and grind settings, Giotto will take care of the rest.
