Just place your Baratza Grinder on the stand and you'll be able to automatically does ground coffee to more or less than 0.2 g. With a operation panel that includes three programmable dosage buttons and a digital LCD window you'll be able to see the weight value as your grinder grinds.
Compact in size, the Esatto will only add a 5" x 1" x 12" area to your grinder.
Features & Functionality of the Baratza Esatto Weight Operation Panel
- Weight-Based: Set the weight of your desired ground coffee to more or less 0.2 g and the Vario-E will weigh the ground coffee while grinding and will stop automatically when it reaches your desired weight.
- Programming: Features three, user programmable grind weight buttons.
- Digital LCD Window: Displays the weight value while grinding.
- Small Footprint: Adds only an inch to the height of your grinder and has a circumference of 12 x 5 inches.

The Esatto does not work with a portafilter because it has to use the included coffee container that fits in the grinder. The holder is specifically designed to work with the weighing mechanism that the container fits on top of.
The Esatto is very accurate, within .02 gram and I?ve tested this with a very accurate scale that I use to weigh green beans which is accurate to .01 gram. Keep in mind also that because it has to shut off the power to the grinder they had to keep ahead of where the grind is in order for the weight to be accurate so they kind of guessed but you can change this by either adding or subtracting weight to the dose. Another way to do this is by recalibrating the scale with a 200 gram calibration weight or if you have another very accurate scale, filling the coffee holder with 200 grams of water. There are instructions in PDF format on Baratza?s website on how to do this. I readjusted the dose to accomplish the same thing. For Example: I want 20 grams of ground coffee for a 12 ounce pour over so I set the Estatto to 20.02 grams to make up the difference in the grind time. This way it?s always exactly (give or take .02 grams) 20g of ground coffee per 12 ounces of water.
All in all, I?m very happy with my purchase and it?s made a major difference in my coffee preparation even though one of the girls at Seattle Coffee Gear said it wouldn?t make much difference in a pour over.
Yes, I?d definitely buy it again.

Dale, I just received my esatto today so I don't have a long track record with it but I can answer your questions. So far it works great but this device is not for direct fill of your portafilter. The portaholder bin will not fit in the grinder when it is mounted on the esatto base. it comes with it's own shorter bin that "floats" on the scale base that operates the grinder's on/off functions. the Esatto grinds ,in real time weight, when the coffee grinds that go into the esatto's specialized bin hit the pre-set weight the grinder turns off, thus very consistent shots, by weight. you have to pour the ground coffee into the portafilter and tamp. this won't direct fill a portafilter and the portaholder will not even fit because the scale mechanism gets in the way and the grind bins that come with your grinder no longer fit when the Esatto is attached. hope this helps, Dave L

I'm admittedly a newbie to the world of home-brewed espresso; I haven't tested the Esatto to compare what it shows is the weighed amount versus weighing it on a separate scale, but I'm trusting the reviews I've read that it's acceptably accurate. That said, I think I can answer the your second question: The baskets into which the ground coffee is dispensed (including the one which holds the Portafilter) that came with your grinder cannot be used with the Esatto, so it's not set up to dispense directly into the portafilter. The Esatto is not compatible with the portaholder (it will not fit). It ships with a different grounds container that "floats" on the scale.

Unfortunately, it cannot be used with the original Vario. It is compatible only with the Preciso, Virtuoso, and Maestro Plus grinders.
