A Note About Coffee & Cups

Let us break it down for you: Although 8 ounces equals a cup in the baking world, a US cup of coffee is measured at 6 ounces and a European cup of coffee is measured at 4.25 ounces. This is why we sometimes list ounces to paint a more accurate picture of capacity.

Pros
  • Simple - No muss or fuss, this simple design, maintenance and use of this French press will have you sipping on your favorite cup o' joe in 4-8 minutes.
Cons
  • No Replacements - Unfortunately this is one of a few Bodum french presses that don't have a replacement carafe if yours happens to break.

Edgar W M: Pretty simple- takes about eight minutes. I fill the pot with water to1 or 1 1/2 inches from the top and pour it into a pan on high heat. Meanwhile, I pour beans into my grinder to cover the rotor and run the grinder for about 10-12 seconds. (You can experiment with quantity of beans - I prefer to err on the "more" side.) Then I pour the grounds into the pot.

When water is not quite boiling (many bubbles forming on the bottom of the pan), I pour the water over the grounds. Stir it with a large spoon, and put the filter top on the pot. 2-3minutes later, I press the plunger slowly to the bottom and bring it back to the top. Another 2 minutes and I press the plunger halfway down and pour my first cup. When ready for the second cup, I press the plunger to the bottom - the second cup is always stronger and more flavorful..

Voila! Ted Mills

PS. I go for high quality beans- worth the price for flavor.

Marilyn L: Heat your water in a kettle to boiling. Depending on how you like your coffee add 5 rounded scoops of coarsely ground coffee to your coffee press. Add water to the top of the silver ring. Place top on press to keep water warm. Do not press down yet. After water has been added set timer for exactly 4 minutes. When timer alarms, press down on press until it reaches the bottom. Your coffee is ready.

P.S. the scoops are 1tablespoon in size.

Enjoy

Miguel M: I use 1coffee scoop per cup of water. Scoop coffee into press, pour hot water, I like to give a swirl with a spoon after a minute, let sit for another 2 minutes, place the plunger and press down. Pour! Coffee is a stronger brew and the taste is stronger. Grind your coffee on plunger/press setting, you don't want fine grounds for a press. Jun 13, 2012

Karl P: 3/4 cup coffee beans medium grind ( about 32f setting on Baratza Virtuoso Preciso Grinder) / add hot water (190 - 195 F) / stir / rest
3 1/2 minutes (raft forms on top of water) / press plunger down / enjoy

Barbara F asked: I threw out the instructions by mistake What are the correct measurments. Water and cofee? Thanks Feb 11, 2012

Edgar W M: I make coffee with my Bodum daily, for myself, but I never consider quantities! I grind beans, and for that I fill the grinder to within 1/2 inch of the top; I boil water in a pan, and to determine quantity I fill the glass pot to within 1/2 to 3/4 of the top ring. I put the grounds in the bottom of the empty glass pot and pour the not-quite-boiling water on top - then stir briefly. The pot sits for 3-4 minutes, and then I use the strainer-plunger to complete the brewing by pushing it down slowly and raising it again to the top, two or three times.

Works great. I suggest you declare Experiment Time and make three pots of coffee in a row, using your best guess as to Too Much grounds, Too Little, and Just Right. You'll get it right in just one day. Good luck, Barbara. Ted

Andrew O: I don't know the official answer, but I estimate about 1 inch of very coaresly ground beans. Then I pour boiling water until the foam reaches near the top, let it sit one minute, stir, let it sit 3 more minutes (4 total), then press & pour. Perfect coffee every time. Feb 15, 2012

A shopper asked: Are there Bodum Presses that have SS top along with internals and double
body?

Kaylie KStaff: The Bodum French presses that we carry all have a plastic edge that can come in contact with the coffee. If you are looking for a French press that doesn't except for the handle, you may consider the La Cafetiere French press:

Shirle F asked: Is there any difference between a coffee press and a tea press? Apr 14, 2012

Kaylie KStaff: It is likely that the filter will be different, as coffee grounds are smaller than tea. Apr 16, 2012
