steve a:I would suspect you may get a LCD screen message if no filter is in there. And you will still get automatic "change filter" messages. I bought this "more work than an automatic machine" for the pleasure of pampering it. So I would use one. I have filters on my water supply but use the resin filter anyway. You could go longer before the change. And you machine will not clog and need to be sent in as soon as others. Hope this helped. P.S. Reservoir can get slummy even with all these filters so don't just use water door on top of machine; soap out reservoir Feb 4, 2014
Robert B:I'm guessing that the resin in the charcoal/resin water filter is an ion-exchange resin that removes divalent metal cations like Ca, Mg, and Mn. My water supply is from a well and contains Mn which accumulates as a brown stain. The Breville filter is lightly stained brown when I change it every second month.Feb 4, 2014
LINNEA B:I use only water that has been filtered through a ZeroWater filter and when it's time to change the pod filter in the water tank, the interior of the tank and the pod filter holder STILL feels slimy so I definitely think that the more levels of filtration , the better!Feb 4, 2014
