Seattle Coffee Gear Store asked: Why did you choose this?
Doug S: Recommended by Gail and this does a great job of cleaning out the machine from the extra oil of the beans. I recommend buying some "cheap" beans to use AFTER you run Grindz through to clear the path of the extra chalk. Mar 7, 2012
Brent S asked: Does anyone know what this stuff is made out of? It says food safe and natural but a lot of manufacturers of products say that these days. Just wondering because after all you do probably end up drinking some it. Jan 1, 2014

William R: Brent, I quote from the container: "Every ingredient is edible and either used to bake bread, prepare your favorite breakfast, or in the case of the food-safe binder a key ingredient in toothpaste." From the EU disclosure document, ingredients are listed as: "Proprietary mixture of cereals and grains with food grade binders."

Judging from inexpert physical inspection, the product looks like organic material with something to bind the ingredients together.

You are right, though, that, after cleaning,a couple of tiny white specks continue to show up for one or two grinds no matter the thoroughness of getting the cleaner out of the grinder. They don't alter the taste and, so far, they don't seem to have affected me.

Ron H: The best I can do is to point you to the developer's web site:

And if that doesn't show up in this reply, go to www mahlkoenig com and navigate to products>GRINDZ

I've been using it for a number of years and have been very satisfied with its results. In addition to following the instructions on the container, I use the vacuum on the grinder after using GRINDZ and then run a few grams of beans through the grinder to "flush" out the remaining GRINDZ material.

Good luck with your grinder.

Kathy B: According to this website, Sweet Maria's (cannot paste URL here), "The product is a proprietary formula of grains, cereals, and pharmaceutical grade binders in a coffee bean shaped tablet." It doesn't have any particular odor or feel to it. Yes, they seem hesitant to list ingredients, which scares some people off. If you are concerned though, wiping down the hopper with a damp paper towel would remove most residue. Jan 2, 2014

Dawna asked: We have the Breville Smart Grinder, which grind setting would I set it to when using the Grindz? Aug 8, 2012
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
David H: I have a different grinder but I do use Grindz to help keep it clean. Use the same setting you would use for French Press (coarse) - the opposite setting you would use for espresso. Aug 13, 2012

Tim C: I do not have the same burr grinder, but have found that setting the grinder to a course setting works very well when using this product. Aug 14, 2012

Teri KStaff: For the Grindz, I would recommend using the setting you most frequently grind on, or a setting slightly finer. Aug 13, 2012

A shopper asked: Hi - looking to use this for a hand grinder, will it work the same? Thanks! Feb 11, 2014

Teri KStaff: Yes, you can absolutely use the Grindz Burr Grinder Cleaner in your hand grinder. Feb 11, 2014

RayNo asked: Can I use this with the built-in grinder on the Breville Barista Express BES870XL? I also have a Breville Smart Grinder and I know I can use it on that at a course grind, but the Barista Express only does fine grind. Aug 28, 2013
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
Teri KStaff: It is perfectly safe to use Grindz on the Breville Barista Express because remove and discard the Grindz product after it has ground through the unit. However, you wouldn't want to use it in a superautomatic machine where water would come into contact with the Grindz after it has been ground. You can use the Grindz on either a course or a fine grind setting. Aug 29, 2013

Mark G asked: Is this product ok to use on the Breville youbrew grinder? Apr 14, 2013

Celiac sufferers and gluten intolerant beware

Great product! Unless you have celiac as it does contain wheat. I unintentionally made a customer of mine very ill as she has severe Celiac's disease. I felt terrible. I do not recommend this in a cafe setting for this reason.

Grindz seems to have been around as long as I've been grinding my own coffee, a good many years now. It seems to do what it is supposed to do, just fine. To be sure I don't know of any competing products, though they may well exist. I will continue to use it.

I have a newish grinder so I honestly couldn't tell you if this stuff works to seriously clean an old grinder, removes oils, etc. I did have trouble getting it back out of the machine -- there were light-colored grinds still coming out of the spout even after I ground some sacrificial beans, and even three or four espresso shots later. Fortunately it is edible, and I haven't noticed an off taste.

Dont use rice

I tried rice in one of my grinders for cleaning and it was too tough, it got caught in the gear and bent the plastic ring holding the burr in place. The Grindz cleaner flows through better and has a degreaser ingredient for the old oils. Now I will never treat my grinder to anything less.

Easy To Use
