Pros
  • Highly Portable - Delicious espresso anywhere with an outlet! In addition to your kitchen, this is great for an office or classroom -- anywhere you'd like coffee but don't have a stove top. Additionally, the detachable base allows you to easily serve from the cordless body
  • Strong, Rich Brew - The Moka concept equals a strong and tasty brew that is perfect for straight shots, Americanos and any milk-based drinks you'd like to make
  • Compact & Easy to Clean - This doesn't take up much room and it's easy to clean after each use

Cons
  • Durability - Several users report that the upper, plastic chamber cracked after using it for awhile; this could be due to user error and other users have suggested that the crack is the result of attempting to tighten the top to the bottom by using the handle, subsequently putting too much pressure on an area that was not made to withstand it
  • Capacity - While the capacity description indicates that you can make 3 or 6 cups, it's technically 3 or 6 shots, which you can then mix with water or milk similar to traditional espresso machines. If you stick with the straight brew, you're looking at about 1/2 - 1 mug of coffee each time, so it isn't the easiest to use for serving a party of several people
  • No Crema - This style of brewing doesn't result in a rich crema on top of the coffee, as you would see in a pump-driven machine. If crema is super important to you, than this is not the machine for you

How it Works
Great espresso is a few simple steps away using the Italian 'Moka' process.
  1. Fill the aluminum boiler with water
  2. Fill the filter with coffee
  3. Switch it on
  4. After a few minutes, authentic espresso will be delivered into the container
  5. Serve!

  • Wash thoroughly after each use -- grounds left on the gaskets can cause degradation
  • User Tip: Purchase extra gaskets and filter baskets from the manufacturer before you need them, they will degrade over time and you don't want to be stuck with an item on backorder
  • User Tip: The top, gaskets and top filter are easily interchangeable with the Bialetti 6 cup stovetop model, so parts are cheap and easy to come by without having to work with DeLonghi

Cons
  • Automatic Milk Foamer - This functionality has mixed reviews; some folks love how it works and think it makes a delicious cappuccino without you taking the time to froth the milk yourself, others think that the function is faulty, messy and does not produce good results. This functionality could very well vary from unit to unit and might be good or bad based on inconsistency in manufacturing
  • Complex Functionality - Most users have found this machine difficult to use right off the bat and highly recommend reading through the instructions a few times before you begin use. Some folks have never been able to get the unit working to specification and felt that its unintuitive operational design was a definite drawback
  • Durability - While this model appears to have significantly less issues around quality in manufacturing, several folks have reported that the machine just simply quit working after under a year of usage.   • Pod Convenience - You can use either standard ESE pods or your own ground coffee, but the pods make for mess-free convenience in the mornings. The machine comes with a starter package of Illy pods for you to try
  • Frothing Wand - Many folks love the frothing wand, as it makes short work of fluffy foam! This can be a difficult skill to attain, so the frothing attachment is a big plus for cappuccino lovers
  • Good Overall Value - Based on sheer quality versus cost, this machine appears to stand up well -- it's middle of the road, and taste reports are just enough all over the place to suggest that the machine likely caters best to those that don't love super dark and murky espresso

Cons
  • Tricky Filter Basket - Several users have reported that the filter basket has become twisted in the filter head, making the machine unusable. To avoid this, you have to be very careful not to twist the filter too tightly in the machine
  • Weak Espresso - The size of the portafilter and the overall pump pressure of the machine means that many users report a weaker shot. Substituting a super fine espresso grind only results in clogging the portafilter, so strong coffee is the result of more than one shot pull -- thus taking more time
  • Poor Manufacturer Support - Many users have reported non-existent to severely delayed customer service and support of their machine from the manufacturer; some have been unable to have their machine fixed in less than a few months, others have been unable to get the right replacement part in a timely manner because it's on backorder
