Research and compare coffee makers:
There are three main coffee extraction methods including drip, french press and cold brew.
Drip coffee makers typically include a water tank, a boiler to heat the water for brewing and carafe with a hot plate or thermal container that the coffee is brewed into. The best drip coffee makers brew the coffee at a temperature hot enough (202 to 204 degrees F) for a good extraction. In our testing the Technivorm and Capresso models brew at the correct temperature and yield the best tasting coffee. There are also several manual drippers such as the Hario Coffee Dripper where hot water is poured through a filter directly into a cup.
French press or pressed coffee makers include a container where coffee grounds are steeped with hot water and then a plunger with a screen is pressed down to screen out the coffee grounds. This method is particularly excellent with darker roasted coffees. Consider french presses from Bodum or the Aeropress.
Cold brewed coffee is a newer method of extraction, where the brewing water stays in contact with the grounds for several hours. Coffee extracted using the cold brew method tastes smoother and is less acidic. Consider the Hourglass Coffee Maker or Hario Cold Brew Pot.
