Features & Functionality of the Saeco Vienna Plus Superautomatic
- Completely Automatic Espresso: The Saeco Vienna Plus brewing system does it all with a simple-to-use control panel. Strength and volume of your coffee or espresso is controlled with a dial.
- Instant Hot Water: Use this feature for hot tea, Americano coffee, making instant oatmeal or even ramen noodles!
- Several Beverage Options: It makes espresso, and it excels at making rich coffee at the press of a button. Fully automated machines like this make what is called Cafe Creme, also referred to as Swiss brewed coffee for the country that made the drink popular.
- Pre-Infusion System: To optimize the flavor extraction, a special program step injects a little hot water into the freshly ground coffee in order to soak it and let it swell up. This feature increases the flavor and aroma of the coffee during the brewing process.
- Professional Quality Grinder: The Saeco Vienna Plus has a built-in, conical type burr grinder, the same type used by the professionals.
- Adjustable Coffee Dosing: Inside the bean hopper you will find a knob that will allow you to adjust it from six to nine grams to change the strength of the coffee.
- Removable Water Tank: The water reservoir can easily be refilled while it is still on the machine or by removing it and filling it at the kitchen tap.
- Removable Brew Group: Also accessed from the side, this brew group is easy to clean and maintain — just pull it out once a week & spray it down with hot water to keep it in great shape.
- Coffee Bean Storage: The built-in covered coffee bean hopper stores up to 12 ounces of whole beans. When the coffee grounds are spent, the machine delivers them to the internal dump box, which can hold up to 20 used coffee pucks.

No, it goes into a separate mode to steam your milk, and after you've finished steaming, you have to remember to switch it back and wait about 4 seconds so you can pull espresso again.
Having said that, we're very happy with our machine, we've had it for several months now and it is much better than other brands we've used.

Use quality coffee beans, and you will have the best latte! May 18, 2013
I have one of these models, when you say you cleaned it...did you descale or just remove the inner works and rinse that off?. Check the nozzle way at back once you remove the brewing unit, make sure it's clear, and check the dual nozzle unit where the coffee comes out for debris. Also check the two metal filter discs where the puck is formed to make sure the holes are clear, you can gently use a toothpick to clear those holes.
Other than that, you're better off to contact the repair unit @ seattle coffee Apr 1, 2013
I will try the suggestions you gave me. I was curious about the metal filter discs. On my old machine (a Starbuck Barista, made by Saeco) I would clean the metal discs, but they were easy to get to. On my Vienna they are harder to get to. I did descale it, to answer your question. Thank you for the advice.

If all the adjustments are roughly unchanged or as originally set by Saeco:
- check if the bean grinder operates normally ( check the consistency of the
coffee grounds)
- make sure that the water system has been cleaned thoroughly:
I assume you cleaned your machine using a descaler like Dezcal or
similar. You must make sure that you rinse the system until there is no
more trace left of the yellowish cleaning solution coming off the water
wand. My experience is that this requires draining the water reservoir
at least twice ( first reservoir with the descaler, then fresh water only ).
After that I refill and I taste the water to make sure it does not present
any salty aftertaste. Only then do I make coffee again.
I would suggest that you rinse again the water system and make sure you only use top quality coffee, not oily and containing no impurities. Apr 17, 2013
Hope this helps. Let me know. Apr 4, 2013
I hope this will work for you Mick M. Good luck, and have a great coffee, and remember the quality of your coffee beans makes a great coffee.

I love this machine and use is everyday, but I don't know what happened to cause this issue other than I let my in-laws touch it. :) Apr 28, 2013
Hope this helps! Apr 29, 2013
My new recipe is a small amount of heavy cream drizzled over the froth of the brewed espresso. Magnifico! May 1, 2013
disappointment is that I can't get a good froth for a latte. I have done all the troubleshooting suggestions. Saeco could rewrite the manual to be more user friendly. Apr 22, 2013
Just make sure you take care of the machine and keep it clean. Mar 25, 2013
I have found that if you try to brew through too much finely ground coffee, it runs over as the water resists passing through the grounds.
Your setting on grind level should be in the center for the best results. Central settings all the way around are best for avoiding issues.
And I can't emphasize enough that you keep your milk whipping staff clean. Jan 28, 2013
When replying to one of the owners of this same model, I somehow left out a very important information.
Perhaps (he or she,) needs to adjust the knobs inside the coffee beans compartment.
I have mine knobs (dials,) Marked as such:
On the larger knob it is at 12, at all time!
On the smaller it is on the third dot from the left of ( + sign ).
I have kept these two settings, and my coffee is great!
Perhaps,(he or she,) should check their own knobs settings, and make these adjustments to correct it, and change it to the proper settings, when grinding their coffee.
Of course, a quality coffee is also important! I also believe that the correct settings, and position of these knobs when grinding the the coffee beans; are an important factor!
"Vienna Plus," is a great way to enjoy a good espresso or cappuccino at anytime. Jan 18, 2013
Anyone have a recommended place to set the volume and leave it? I see my main use as shots and americano's and from what I can gather it may be best to always brew the same volume and then add hot water up to 5oz to make a cup. Dec 5, 2012
I have been using these Saeco machines for 7+ years. I like a strong coffee so I set about 3. Any smaller than that and you are not getting the full impact of the coffee as not enough water passes thru the grounds. More than that is to taste. I often move it up for friends. I myself love espresso with a bit of milk, hence I am on my third machine.
Here's what my experience has taught me. 1. Clean often. I mix the cleaner with way less water than suggested and let it come into the machine plumbing and stop. Let it sit overnight. 2. Use only bottled water...the machines that will refill your bottles are great. If you have a home water filter, that is not good enough. 99.9% of problems are sediment in the plumbing. Good luck. Keep in mind that it will take a few shots after you adjust the grind setting for the beans that were already in the chute to work through and for you to taste the difference. Also, make sure that the machine is grinding as you change the settings.

Comparison, Evaluation & Expectation
Review by Larry -
Price Value Quality I've only had it a few days. Worked great right out of the box. I've had two Solis Master 5000 digital over the last several years. Looks like the parts are similar. It's quicker and simpler brewing. A little faster making steam, but a little weaker delivering the steam. The steam output is adequate. The machine only needs a wipe up after use. The Solis required more. The water use is very efficient. The ejected coffe pads are much drier than the Solis pads were. All the coffee flavor was extracted. It appears to be using less coffee and making a stronger brew. I left the grinding setting on the factory settings. The bean hopper is 400% improved. No having to tap the hopper to get the beans to fall into the grinder.I make four lattes a day everyday. More during the holidays and other special occasions. I'm looking forward to my first descale and brew unit cleaning.in a month. Time is going to be the real test. If it goes two years without breaking like my first Solis, or three years llike my last Solis, I'll be impressed. I really like the simplicity of the machine. It's a true automatic. Easy clean up.

Still great, better than I thought
Review by Jay -
Quality Price Value I reviewed this when I first bought it. Now that we have had it for almost a year I wanted to follow up: I think this is an exceptionally good value. Yes, it is plastic, and that concerned me a little when it was new, but that has had no negative impact. Nothing has broken despite constant use by 2 heavy espresso drinkers. I did the math, putting together a spreadsheet of all of my expenses (beans, milk, distilled water, cups and lids from Costco) and figured that it paid for itself in less than 2 months, when compared to frequenting coffee shops. If it died after a year, I would probably get another one. If it lasts 3 years--and I have no doubt it will--then it is just a great deal.
There is no bypass, so no easy way to make an occasional decaf in the evening, as the bean hopper is already full of regular beans. That is probably the only shortcoming I have found.(Posted on 4/6/13)

Got it and love it
Review by JDB -
Quality Price Value Read all the pros and cons on this site and others, so had some skepticism. But - I've enjoyed coffee at my in laws for years with the exact same unit and they never had a problem. Always delicious coffee. So glad we bought this from SCG (great price) , but admittedly based on concerns I went with the extended 2-year warranty. Have been enjoying great coffee for past two weeks since we got it.

Good bang for buck, does the work it needs to (mostly)
Review by Ken Tang -
Price Value Quality In our kitchen there is a constraint on space and power, and it took a while to find this super-auto that draws less than 1300w and does everything we need it to. The only drawback is the steaming... it is slow and does not produce enough foam for cappuccino. We also replaced the black plastic wand with the stainless steel one, but does not help much.

Great espresso machine
Review by John -
Price Value Quality I bought one for home and we make 6 to 10 cups a day with it. I liked it so much I bought another for work. Coffee tastes great, machine is simple to use and reliable. You can make your coffee strong or weak with the turn of the dial. It pre-wets the grinds as well. The crema is excellent.
The only downside is that it can run out of water if you aren't paying attention. After about 15 or 30 seconds it gives up and stops the brew if it doesn't get more water. If you are fast, you can add water and keep the machine going (at home, it is right by the sink so we can grab the faucet and quickly add water to the reservoir). So, you just need to be sure it has water before you brew your cuppa joe.
This is the best value I've seen for an automatic espresso machine.(Posted on 9/27/12)

easy access to water and beans
Review by bean-nut -
Quality Price Value I wanted to add to my other review that the rationale for purchasing the Vienna Plus machine and not others was the large bean hopper and large water reservoir. Not only that, but the water reservoir is on the top of the machine. It is removable, but all I do is fill a pitcher of filtered water and pour it in the reservoir. I have used other machines with side reservoirs and think the top mount is much easier to fill.

Great coffee and great value
Review by morning challenged -
Quality Price Value A friend of mine had this machine and one day at her house she made me a cup of coffee. No fancy expensive beans--she just uses Duncan Donuts (no kidding). Once you've tried it, you know there is no going back to a drip machine.
No, it is not stainless steel. It doesn't have a cup warmer or a lot of major bells and whistles. But, for the price, you can't beat it for the great coffee it makes.(Posted on 8/17/12)

Excellent investment
Review by Jay -
Price Value Quality After several years my Saeco Italia died. Going shopping at Seattle Coffee Gear, we asked about a reasonably priced replacement and were presented with the Saeco Vienna Plus. I was a bit wary about a plastic machine, but have been very very happy with its performance. It took a while to get the grinder settings dialed in; you can only change the grind size while it is actually grinding, then it takes 3-4 shots before the adjustment effects the shot (according to the manual). Once done, it has been practically perfect. I did the math, and will pay for the machine in 2 months based on what I save over frequenting a coffee shop.
I love it!(Posted on 7/30/12)

My second Vienna Superautomatica
Review by vienna-fan -
Quality Value Price I have been getting my morning coffee from a Vienna Superautomatica for over seven years. The Vienna Plus is my second machine and it only improves on the previous model. A little less noise, faster warm-up, and faster grind than the previous model.
I like a strong americano so this machine is ideal because I can select a fairly large volume of water to pull through the shot. I can also select two consecutive pulls so that the machine will grind the second dose while pulling the first cup. Push the brew button twice, walk away and prep the half and half for steaming, and when I come back, I have my stainless mug full of piping hot americano that I can sip on for the next hour or so. The crema is also excellent and every once in a while I'll grab a spoon and skim a good dose of crema to start things off right.
My first machine recently died after seven years of dutiful service. I tried to convert to a French press but the effort and results just did not compare. After a few weeks, I happily ordered the Vienna Plus and I have been VERY happy with the results.
I have used all sorts of other espresso machines over the years and this is by far the best I have personally used. Push one button to turn it on. Wait a few minutes. Push another button and in another minute or so, you have a consistently excellent espresso or americano. The automatics are really a joy and this model is so reasonable, it is clearly worth the additional money versus the manual machines.
Comparing to other automatics, it would be nice to be able to brew and steam at the same time, have two dosers for caffeinated and decaf, have a cup warmer, etc. but for the price difference, I'll gladly live with those small limitations.
I wake up with a smile on my face every morning because I know that in a few short minutes, I'll be enjoying a great americano courtesy of my Vienna Plus and some wonderful beans.

Adjustable grind, Easy To Use, Fast warm-up, Simple, Easy To Clean, Great Taste, Consistent brew, Adjustable dose

Quality Value Price I bought one of these 10 years ago when they were such a novelty and were in the $600-$700 range. I used this machine daily for 10 YEARS with no issues. This unit is AMAZING!
Review by xenohobe -
Quality Value Price I purchased one of the refurb units. I can't express just how satisfied I am. This machine really does highlight the quality of your beans. Good beans taste better, great beans are extrodinary. I've always been picky about the beans I get and trying this unit out with blends I don't like really make me hate them more.
A friend of mine has had his for years, I saw this for sale and figured I'd give it a try. Now I can't imagine life without one.
It's so easy to clean and service. Everything comes apart and goes back together like mechanical artwork.
If mine happens to ever break, I'm going to buy one of the nicer models as they have larger water and bean capacity, which are my only gripes about this unit. Even though I do want a nicer unit, I wouldn't hesitate buying this unit again. It's just fantastic.

Fun to play with, pulls great shots
Review by MaryAnne -
Quality Value Price My only "complaint" would be that it is slow to thoroughly steam the milk. But temper that criticism with the fact that I use a commercial espresso machine at work, so it's probably pretty speedy for a home machine. Just steam your milk a little extra hot and then pull your shots. You'll need to tinker with the grind to get your perfect espresso shots, but that's part of the fun.

Great Taste, Easy To Use, Easy To Clean

Review by Colby Jack -
Quality Value Price This is so easy to use and fast! I was a bit nervous but it is EASY! And fast and the coffee tastes great and it actually makes decent foam for fluffy drinks with caramel on top. It's wonderful. My husband and I no longer have morning dates at Starbucks but have them at home instead. The coffee is better and the commute is fab! It's wonderful to just push the button and out comes a wonderful cup of coffee! Cleaning, so far has been way easier than I thought. You just rinse the grinder once a week and empty/rinse the drip tray daily. The little coffee puck dump tray gets emptied once a week too - so simple. Takes me about 30 seconds for a nice americano. The foaming takes some time but the steaming is great - does not add a lot of water to milk. The only thing that would have been nice is the bypass grinder for making decaf coffee at night because I love it so much...but that's what they make tea for! Thank you SCG for all the videos and phone consultation. You rock!!

Quick Brewing, Easy To Use, Easy To Clean, Great Taste

Quality Value Price We bought a refurbished Saeco Italia several years ago when our Starbucks bill got too high. Nice: Tax-Free Refurb Saeco Vienna Plus
Review by Christian Livingstone -
Quality Value Price As a tax-free purchase, and because of the price on this refurb unit, it took the perceived risk out of making a transition from drip coffee to pressurized brewing, for me. These "super automatics" are just as convenient as a drip brewer, maybe more. I like the unit for not having many "bells and whistles" and not having a "glitzy" appearance. But I did meticulously mask it off and then spray painted it, with a deeper graphite color that has a slightly textured finish, which gives it a bit less of a "plasticy" look and covered over the logos and dumbbell symbols. The three buttons need no reminders. I'm mostly using it for cups at about 7 oz per shot with Lavazza beans. That seems to give great coffee with nice crema, too. I'm frothing milk with the wand too, at times, and experimenting with cappuccinos, but haven't gotten to the place where I'm able to do the Latte Art yet.
Peace be with you all,
C. Livingstone

Quality Value Price We bought this as an anniversary present to ourselves, and really love it. It only takes a dozen cups or so to dial in all the knobs to your taste. It heats up very quickly, and is easy to use. Others have commented about the single "trouble" light being hard to diagnose, but we didn't think so. If the red light is on, either it's out of beans, out of water, or something isn't closed (tray, dregs door, etc). Pretty simple. It's noisy when grinding, but there's no such thing as a quiet grinder, so we don't mind.
I do wish it held more water, and more beans. Seems most coffee we buy comes in 12 oz bags, and the machine only holds 8.
Pros:
Easy To Use, Great Taste, Quick Brewing
Cons:
Small Water Container(Posted on 10/5/10)

Fantastic Machines
Review by Salty Ken -
Quality Value Price We have the equivalent Solis 5000 machine, not a single burp for over 6 years. Family of four coffee users. I hate to admit it, but we rarely cleaned it, and didnt descale often enough. The first leak just started and I will just buy a new one. Hope they dont raise the price as this is 1/3 the retail price we paid for the first one. I bought one as a gift for a small law firm in DC. It lasted 4 years of everyday use. They loved it. I dont want to examine any other. Only issue is its a one bean machine, one at a time. A bypass chute would make it perfect.
Pros:
Quick Brewing, Easy To Use, Commercial Grade, Great Taste, Large Water Container, Easy To Clean
