The user controls the power going to the heating element. It can be adjusted in 10 percent increments from 0 to 100 at any time once the roasting process begins until the beans are ejected. This allows for subtle adjustments of the roasting profile. The main fan's speed can also be adjusted from 0 to 100 in 25 percent increments. This gives you another tool to control the roasting profile.The KN-8828B-2K roaster delivers around 25 cups of freshly roasted beans and is ideal for home or light commercial use.

How the Hottop Coffee Bean Roaster Works

Hottop offers two models, the "B" model which is a very hands on manual and precise roaster and the "P" model which has programmability and can automatically roast beans.

Tips and Tricks

Hottop makes small improvements on earlier models, the KN-8828B-2K features a special knob on the back of the machine, below the main ventilation fan. In emergency situations, such as a power outage or a failure of the electrical ejection mechanism, the user can pull this knob and manually eject the beans.

A shopper asked: What is the purpose of the filter? Can I use this w/out the filter as it only seems to vent roasting smoke out of the machine. I use the unit outdoors or under a powerful range hood so getting smoke in the house is not a problem. Nov 22, 2013

Barrie F: There are two filters-top and rear. The main one is at the rear. In addition to filtering out some of the smoke particles it serves to modulate the amount of air sucked through the unit by the fan. Without a filter it will be very difficult to fin-tune your roasts and take advantage of your HT's flexibility. Also, especially oudoors in anything other than a very warm climate, it will be difficulty to get to or go far past first crack before the HT runs out of time and auto-ejects the beans. Altogether not a very good idea from my perspective! Nov 22, 2013

Dave M: I asked this question here and at HT. Their response was that removing the filter would result in too much heat loss. If you pull the rear filter you will hear the fan speed change whch confirms that fact. Since there is too much smoke, with or without the filter, for inside roasting, (unless you have a serious $$$ range hood) it comes down to heat loss and a dramtic change in the profile. W/out a range hood, you will have to go outside anyway as most people aren't used to and don't like the smell. The only problem with outside isthat you would have to adjust for the ambient temp/humidity change over the seasons. Then, of course, as the filters clog, the profile changes anyway.

Bottom line: leave the filters in and roast outside. You can probably get away with replacing only the main (rear) filter. Thanks guys!

John F: I built an adapter and 4" exhaust for my B2. I replaced the end filter with a carbon based material used in commercial range hoods, which gets replaced every 10-12 roasts at a cost of $0.02 per each. I also plugged the top filter.
The roaster is very consistent, and I roast 280g in about 14-16 minutes, depending on roast depth.
I also moved the K-probe approx. 1", allowing me to achieve French roast levels without having a default dump to the tray.
This roaster is capable of jealousy-inducing coffees if you use a little imagination and research!

Robert B: The filter is to reduce the amount of smoke coming from the machine. I would not recommend using the unit without the filter. Without the filter and using the unit under a range hood is not a good idea. This will add smoke / odor in your house. For the price for this top of the line roaster, why would you want to take a chance and use the unit without a filter? Nov 24, 2013

Larry K: I'm not really sure what the answer is on this. The filters have to help maintain the temperature level while filtering out the smoke. Too much heat may come out the back if there's not a filter. When I roast, after the beans eject, I remove the bean chute cover and rear filter to let the roaster cool down quicker while cooling the beans. Nov 25, 2013

Thomas G: I can't speak to whether it affects the roast itself but it definitely filters smoke if you don't have alternative methods. I originally used my roaster under the hood with the hood turned on and now use it by the kitchen sink with no other ventilation other than the filter and my smoke alarm never goes off. Nov 22, 2013

Dan T: I weight my green beams, 8 oz for each roast. And it takes about 17 min to get a "city" roast and about 19 min for full city. One thing nice about this roaster is it will beep at you when the temperature inside the roaster reach 395 deg. You can eject the bean right away. You will get a city roast. If you do nothing, it will beep about 20 sec and spit the bean out. You get a city+ roast. Or you can push any button and it continue the roast to the next level. Hope that helps. I recommend this roaster for its temperature control. Roast by temperature is much better than by time, because different bean types and moisture contents require different amount of roasting time. I recommend program 20 min roasting time. If you don't do anything, it will warn you when the temperature reach 395 deg and will dump the beans out after 20 sec of warning (a city+ roast). Again, you can over write it by push any button and get a darker roast. Dec 28, 2012

Larry K: I would think with that amount of beans it would be a city roast depending on your roaster settings. The hotpot recommends 250 grams. I'm currently using 250 grams (about 8-9 oz ) and total roasting is a little over 18 minutes, letting it run 15- 20 seconds into 2nd crack. This brings it to a full city roast. Dec 28, 2012

I forgot to add in my last review:
You can greatly enhance/ extend the life of this machine by adding a drop of Hayne's food-safe silicone grease to the outer drum shaft end where it sits in the front bearing plate.
I do this about every 5-10 roasts, as needed or when cleaning the view glass.
The grease is cheap, and readily available. A $6 tube will last years.

An excellent kickstarter

As close as you're going to get to a commercial roaster under the $3,000 target range. I started my roasting business with this, and still like to play with it.
Heating is a tad weak for the advertised 300 g (max) batch size. I recommend 230g for a medium-fast coffee roast, 250g for an espresso roast. I roast 280g w/ a charge temp around 340 F for a 15-16 minute roast.
With some research/ practice, you'll make astounding coffees.
Ours is 2 1/2 yrs old & has roasted about 2,500 Lbs, with only minor maintenance.
If you're serious, buy it. Not so serious? Get an SR-500.

Big improvement over iRoast 2

I lost my iRoast 2 in a fire at the house and insurance was kind enough to cover the significant increased cost of this roaster. There are so many things to really like about it.
1 - Consistent roast of all beans using 250g recommended dosage.
2 - Very close to perfect setting out of the box for a slightly dark medium roast which, unlike Starbuck's, does not leave you drinking charcoal dust.
3 - Dump to rotating tray with agitator for fast, professional cooling.
4 - Totally seems like a professional roaster in miniature.
Small dislikes:
I roast 4 batches at a time to get enough coffee for 10days. The machine takes time to cool down to temperature after each batch. But then is more consistent across batches.
Sight glass gets nasty after a session but fairly easy to clean as well.

I roast outside but the level of smoke and noise is well below what I had grown used to. I would definitely recommend it to those flush with cash or insurance coverage.

Very Good Roaster

This replaces my Genie Cafe which I've used for close to 7 years which I decided to upgrade.

So far, I've only used the auto program, but this allows me to change the blower speed, heater temp and time to easily adjust the roast. Very good roasts my first three times. Runs quieter than expected, well built.

Well written manual and website to understanding the Hottop and get tips for roasting. Easy to clean and assemble.

Easy to see and hear beans cracking.

Buy One - Get Overcaffinated

Review by

I am using the Auto program and varying the bean weights to achieve different levels of roasts. So far, he results have been better than my best Popcorn Popper roasts.

The machine is very quiet and there are no issues hearing the 1st and 2nd cracks. The beans have a fuller flavor than popper roasts.

The machine has several built in fail-safes to insure you watch the machine through the entire process. It is VERY important to be with this machine during the entire roasting process.

I thought is was going to be hard to strip it down for cleaning - it is very easy to do and get back together. Clean after every roast and keep to the full scale cleaning schedule.

The Hoptop website is very user friendly for parts and filters and there are plenty of other websites where you can gain useful information on using this product.

Shipment was quick (5 days) and I have been roasting ever since. Wonderful FRESH coffee. You will drink more coffee with fresh product.

Great Taste, Easy To Clean, Easy To Use
