  • Keep the Steam Wand Clean - For optimal results, you'll need to use Jura Cleaning products to keep the steam wand clean.

How Does it Compare? The Jura ENA 4 is a great machine for the cost and is easier to use than some of the similar machines. The same model is well used and abused by SCG testers and earns high marks for ease of use and consistency. We call this color black although as you can see the front is silver and the sides are black.

A shopper asked: I have read that the frothing wand is prone to coming off while in operation. Can anyone confirm or deny? Mar 6, 2013
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
Kristen N: Yes, it does occasionally come off. I will use it for months without problems and then the wand will pop off twice in one morning. When that happens, I remove and thoroughly clean the wand in case there is a "plug" that is causing it to come off. (I don't know that this is the case, but I figure that it can't hurt.) Usually, I try to use my left hand to hold it in place when frothing. When it pops off, it shoots steam, causes some coffee to spray from the cup (which is a little messy) and is momentarily startling. However, it is not as dangerous or horrible as one review made it sound. Bottom line: I don't like it and wish that it didn't happen, but I can live with it. The other feature that I don't like about the machine is that the water reservoir isn't quite large enough. I'd like to be able to get 4 mugs of coffee before having to fill it. Again, not a big deal, but it would be more convenient if the reservoir were about 8 ounces greater. Mar 15, 2013

tom h: It is possible that it comes off during operation but only if it has been lose in the beginning already. This may happen by cleaning or accidentally losing it a bit while taking out the drawer for cleaning. I always doublecheck before using the frother, it's a simple grip to make sure that the wand sits tight. I had my share of vapour steam in my face though. Mar 6, 2013

Alexander H: It has come up for me several times. The reason was typically that I put initially too much pressure on it and it was just slightly clogged. (The wand is attached by a ``rubber hose'' -- presumably one could use a hose clamp to attach it firmly).
Otherwise, the machine makes terrific coffee and is small on the countertop. I would buy it again.

Jeffrey L: Yep, it likes to come off, though only in the first few seconds when some water droplets are being pushed out, and also more so when it starts to get clogged. I always hold it on with one hand when >>slowly<< opening the steam valve. It is a nuisance but I still like the machine, nice and compact, and would buy one again. (I own two). Mar 6, 2013

Teri KStaff: If the wand on the Jura Ena 4 is not kept clean, it can become blocked and therefore may come off during operation. Keeping the frothing wand clean and free of dried milk blockages by running water from the steam arm after every use, and then removing the lower piece of the panarello and giving it a rinse will eliminate this issue. Linda B: The steam wand does come off periodically, usually if not dry. I haven't really had much of a problem with it though, If you like cappuccino, I would consider buying the separate frothing attachment. It works great and is very frothy! Mar 7, 2013

Jonathan L: I have had this machine for 2 years and have never had an issue with the wand coming off. I do not use it that much, but when doing so ensure to clean it after every use. Mar 7, 2013

Carlos E: Yes this is true. When this is happening often, if you clean out the narrow part of frothing wand tip it will stop happening. Mar 7, 2013

A shopper asked: We are replacing a built in meile coffee center, and mainly used the machine for just coffee. I like having fresh ground beans and the one cup at a time also not having to have one built in. Would the machine be a good mach for me? Nov 10, 2011
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
Thomas G: I'm happy with this machine, but it does have one significant limitation--the size of the water tank. If you are making coffee in mugs--say, 10 ounces or so--you should expect to make only two mugs before you need to refill the water tank. That's not such a big deal since the tank comes off the back of the machine easily and fills quickly.

I keep the machine set at the factory default--5 ounces with the normal amount of coffee, but I usually set it for 2 cups, which makes 10 ounces with the strong amount of coffee. It tastes great (granted, I'm using home roasted coffee, and that has much to do with the taste).

When I make espresso, I use the strong setting for 2 ounces, which means I use the rotary dial for the coffee setting and the water amount.

I have had the machine since March and have had no problems with it. I recommend using the water filters.

A complaint in reviews is that the steam wand sometimes shoots off during steaming. This has happened only when I've knocked it around a bit so that it's not securly attached. It's no big deal.

The ENA4 has the same brew head as the other ENA units, and if I'm not mistaken, the same as all the other Jura machines. That makes it a great value for the price.

Timothy G: I love my ENA 4. It's easy to use, programmable to your liking and every cup of coffee is fantastic. This is my second Jura coffee centre and the quality is unmatched in the industry. I bought the ENA 4 specifically for its compact size. I have limited space in my kitchen, but still wanted a superior fully-automatic machine. I can tell you that you will be thrilled with the coffee. However, due to its small size, you will be filling the water and beans way more often than you are used to with a built-in unit. I still highly recommend a Jura machine, but step up to a larger unit with a higher water & bean capacity. Nov 14, 2011

Frank C: I make one cup of coffee two or three times a day with my JURA ENA 4, rarely a latte or cappuccino. Wanting a smaller footprint, the ENA replaced a Jura Impressa C5, which I passed along to a coffee appreciating son.

The ENA 4 makes very good coffee, especially using premium beans from Stumptown. Easy to operate, clean, and maintain. The water container is smaller than the C5, so more frequent refills are the tradeoff for the smaller footprint and more striking appearance. The rear placement of the water container seemed awkward at first, but soon mastered.

Satisfied, yes very.

Julie L: I've never used my machine for coffee, only for espresso. Also, this has the coffee grinder built in, so it might not be the right machine for you. That said, I LOVE this machine. It takes a bit of getting used to, but once you find your way around, you get a perfect cappuccino/latte/espresso every time! Nov 15, 2011

Gordon P: I didn't like the machine much. The water reservoir ws so small I had to fill it ever few cups (but I was making lattes). The automatic mechanism seemed to work ok, but the coffee didn't taste very good. I sent the machine back and got another type of machine. Nov 16, 2011

Heike A: Actually within our family we have 4 JURA coffemakers. 3 ENA 5 modells and one ENA 4, our oldest is 3 years old, never had a problem and there is no better coffee than fresh ground and brewed. Nov 14, 2011

Jeffrey L: Yes, absolutely. It makes great coffee, is flexible and easy to use. The milk steamer is a little finicky, sometimes blows off, and requires practice, but makes great milk foam too. Nov 14, 2011

Rosemarie N asked: I just purchased the ENA 3 and am not getting a good foam. The frothing position produces some, but not much compared to a previous machine I owned. Am I doing something wrong or is the panarello/steam system not built well for producing a "heavier, more creamy like" foam? Thanks! Oct 4, 2012
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
Jeffrey L: In my experience there are 3 possibilities. First is cleaning, after 10 or so lattes the wand builds up some milk solid residue inside and must be disassembled and cleaned, not very difficult. Second, the wand is designed to produce foam when the outer section of it is pushed down, I have to push it down quite hard and constantly while foaming using thumb and a finger in between the upper and lower rubber pieces, while holding the wand firmly onto the machine and being careful to avoid a steam burn. Frankly, this whole steam wand deserves a re-design. And third, the type or brand of milk. For reasons I do not understand, the most natural, unhomogenized milk we can buy locally will not produce any foam at all, and some milk from industrial producers is poor also. My best result is with homogenized, organic milk such as Organic Valley. It takes knowing a few tricks with this machine to get good foam, but now I get good results consistently. Oct 7, 2012
Reply to Jeffrey Good answer? Yes (0) No (0)
Irl C: The foaming feature of that machine unfortunately is not very good....you have to use the steam wand and and a stainless steel cup to really make foamed work...the automatic
method, although it does produce some foam, is just weak, as you say.

Maybe you could improve it a little depending on the fat content of the milk you use...might be worth a try.

Kristen N: I have the ENA 4 and am able to get a good foam. It takes some practice. If the wand is too deep, it heats the milk but doesn't produce much froth. If the wand is too shallow, it produces big bubbles but not the nice, dense foam. I alter the height while frothing and experimented until I learned to get a good foam. Oct 8, 2012
Reply to Kristen Good answer? Yes (0) No (0)
donald m: I don't really use the foaming milk position on my ENA 4, I use a battery operated wand-about $15- to whip up the milk. I heat up the milk, whip it and then use the Jura machine. Obviously I'm not utilizing the machine to it's full capacity. Another note- non-fat milk creates the best foam.

Carol N: I have an ENA 4 and must agree that the frothing is not impressive compared to bigger home units and commercial units. I also only have skim milk at home and assumed whole milk or cream would produce a better froth. It is not a feature I use often. Oct 8, 2012

Irl C: Sorry, but I only use it to make one cup at a time so I don't know how it behaves in two cup mode....whatever it may be, the machine is very easy to set and adjust to do what you want....have had it for several years, highly reliable and we just love the coffee it makes.... Nov 27, 2012

Teri KStaff: The Syntia or the Ena 4 would be good options! Keep in mind that this Jura Ena 4 does require using the Jura cleaning and descaling products, which may end up costing more to you in the long run than the Saeco, which allows you to remove the brew unit to rinse it about once a week, rather than using a tablet. I have the machine now for one year and use it daily, and most of the time multiple times per day. My guest are amazed at the quality of their drink and my wife loves that I do not make a mess when I making espresso. The computer chips tells me every thing I need to remember, and the cleaning program is flawless. All in all I could not image a better machine for me.

Well I would say that for the money you really can't go wrong. It will produce quality shots of coffee fairly quik. Also if you use distilled water in it you don't have to buy a filter or decalcify the machine. I would watch the video and also youtube videos on using the machine, I got several tips on how to make the best possible coffee from the machine. My only gripe is the small water tank. If you plan on entertaining sadly you may have to buy a more costly machine only due to the tank. Unless you don't mind filling it up every four to five shots. I have yet to have the steam nozzle shoot off of mine, I was told that if you keep it clean that wont happen. So far so good.

Bought mine last summer and couldn't be happier. The crema on my one-button cup of coffee is perfect and it's ready soon after start-up from cold. If you buy one, watch the video and go through the text-heavy manual (the Swiss are a particular bunch) to learn the menus, the key to getting what you want every time. Watch the store's video too and note that this is the machine in their own staff room.
Clean the wand frequently to prevent it popping off (hilarious, but just one time) or spend tons more to get the fancier model. I'm good with it, and my wife's a hot chocolate fan.
I keep our ENA 4 close to the fridge and its filtered water, which helps overcome the smallish tank.

Our ENA 4 has seen heavy use for 2 years now and it works great. Yes, the steam wand pops off from time to time and that can be irritating (Jura really needs to fix this issue or possibly offer a replacement wand that works better). That being said, the build quality of this machine is excellent. We are primarily latte drinkers and are very pleased with the results we get. My recommendation: If the relatively minor steam wand issue is going to drive you crazy, then get a different Jura model. Otherwise, this one is very nice for the money. We hope to have this machine for years to come but will most likely stick with Jura in the future.

I looked for a long time before I spent this much on a coffee machine and after all my research and talking to baristas I settled on the Jura and I have not regretted it. It is like having a Starbucks in your kitchen anytime you want a cup. I have mastered the way I like my morning coffee- expresso - 8oz with 3 oz of steamed milk- fabulouso. Better than starbucks in my opionion. I have more than paid for my machine as I drink 2 cups each day and sometimes 3 in the winter months. I love this machine and SCG has excellent prices. The owner of a coffee roasting business told me about their website- it is where they send machines that need repair in their shoppe. I am very happy- best appliance in my home!!! Love it.

I chose this machine mostly because of space limitations, but I am very happy with it after owning it for about a year and a half now. I second the other reviewers that complained about the small water tank and wand popping off, but to me, the tank issue is a trade off for the relatively small size of the unit, and I don't find the wand to be a major annoyance. The product tastes great, cleaning is easy and operation is straightforward. The instruction manual is comprehensive and well written.
I previously owned a couple of more expensive Gaggia machines that developed serious problems (where the cost of repair was prohibitive) after only 3 years or so of normal use. In comparison I feel that the Jura is not only much more solidly built, but also less temperamental and much more of a "set it and forget it" machine. As with any machine of this type, I'd recommend staying on top of the cleaning and filter changes when prompted to do so.

It's simple, it's quiet, doesn't take much counter space, the coffee tastes good and it makes reasonable foam. The only gripe is the steam wand which is manageable. But for basic use of 2 adults in the house it's perfect.

I use the machine daily, it heats up very quickly, the machine is a high quality product and it makes great coffee. Having used old style espresso machines and conventional drip makers for many years, the ENA makes making coffee a breeze. I will never go back. The only minus i have so far is that the water tank is a tadd small on this model if more than one or two users.

It will happen to you. The steam wand will blow off. I was aware of this problem because of online reviews and thought silly rabbit, you just aren't using the machine correctly. I found out, however, that when going through the machine set up and trial, that the wand would indeed blow off, way before it ever had a chance to get dirty!
I got a silicone o-ring and put it on the rubber portion of the wand and this has reduced the problem but not eliminated it. I still am a little gun shy.
On the positive, its a quiet machine that makes great coffee.
As for the water capacity, I only use it for 2 double shot lattes per day and it is large enough to handle that.

Pros:
Easy To Use, Easy To Clean, Looks Great, Quiet, Quick Brewing, Great Taste

I was reluctant to purchase an automatic because of some of the bad consumer reviews I'd read. I couldn't be happier with this machine. It is perfect for our needs so I'll jump in to counter the cons people have been listing about this product.

Water tank too small:
I don't think so at all. I don't like leaving water sitting in a tank for too long so I think this is more than sufficient space.

Steam nozzle falls off:
This happened to me on a couple of occasions so I know now to be sure to press firmly up and into place prior to activating steam. So if it blows off, it means I did not press firmly enough.

Pros:
Easy To Use, Easy To Clean, Quick Brewing

Cons:

Easy as 1 push of a button to make a coffee or an espresso in the morning! Family friendly with multiple be rage strengths and sizes at the spin of the same button. Note: Make sure to hold the frother rubber gasket firm to the connection nozzle when you turn the steam level or else the brother pops off! Just hold it while you push the level and once the steam comes out it stays on without a problem. I've become addicted to late night decaf mochacinos and I don't even like decaf! It just awesome to have a delicious warm beverage option during a mid-winter night!

Cleaning is also as easy as can be, just rinse and the tray is ready to go. I do think it takes some doing to get a perfect Starbucks like thick foam and I might invest in the attachment for that, but I'm pretty ok with the thickness of the foam I get if I take my time and vary the air intake as I go.

Pros:
Variety of sizesstrength, User Friendly, Quick Brewing, Easy To Use, Easy To Clean, Great Taste

We purchased the Jura ENA 4 several weeks ago and have used it daily without a problem. The machine is easy to use and in our opinion makes a tasty cup of coffee. The milk frothing wand works well; just remember to make sure it is securely attached at the top, or yes, it can blow loose from the pressure. But the steam pressure makes wonderful frothy milk! The water tank is on the small side so you have to refill with water more often. Jura really does stand behind their products. Our package was missing the grinder wrench, but no problem, Jura sent one out immediately. All in all we are glad we purchased the Jura ENA 4 from Seattle Coffee Gear.

Pros:
Great Taste, Easy To Use, Easy To Clean, Quick Brewing

Cons:
Small Water Container

This is my first coffeemaker that has a plug - I was a 'buy it' or french-press person before.
I purchased this machine in Feb of 2010. After about 8 weeks I am still in love and haven't bought a coffee drink since. I love the one-touch; I think the flexibility of grind, amount of grounds and ounces of water allow for a darn good cup no matter what you like. And the size, awesome. It was the fear of giving up so much counter space that kept me out of the market for so long.
I am disappointed with the milk frother tho. It does seem like it will wear out sooner rather then later, and it requires a complete disassembled cleaning every other use to really ensure a good froth.
All in all, I recommended this to a friend, she came over and checked it out, and bought one herself that night.

It is a good little machine and I think the size-to-flexibility-to-price is a great balance.

Pros:
Quick Brewing, Easy To Clean, Great Taste, Easy To Use

Cons:
Frother wand

For The Price It Could be Much Better

I really thought I was buying a machine that would end my quest for the "perfect" cup. This one didn't. Oh it brews a decent and varied cup of coffee etc BUT:
1) The water tank is WAYYY too small for two people in the AM. It could easily be extended further back and doubled in size.
2) The bloody thing seems to always require some attention. Empty grounds, fill tank, clean, replace cartridge, whichever, it never lets you forget it's there AND some of those requirements necessitate pricey items.
3) The "strong" setting isn't.
4) There aren't enough menu choices for a cup.

All in all it's a decent machine but there have to either be better ones out there for the money or cheaper ones that do the same thing.

My wife and I use the machine 2 to 3 times per day for milk frothed drinks. We both like it a lot. It is a nice addition to the kitchen design wise. It is easy to use. The water tank is small and we fill it daily, but it is easy to fill. The one to two day cleaning is also easy. I just decalcified and that took a long time. I also did my first cleaning with the tablet and that was easier. The coffee tastes great. We use Arrowhead Water and Peat's Major Dickinson coffee.

Pros:
Quick Brewing, Easy To Use

Cons:
Small Water Container
