The Mazzer Mini Flat Burr Espresso Grinder is widely appreciated as a commercial-grade, high quality grinder suited for small cafes, restaurants and home users who want a professional edge. Mazzer's latest version of the Mini Flat Burr Grinder comes with a stainless-steel grind tray and a power cord that comes out of the bottom rather than the side.

Features & Functionality of the Mazzer Mini Flat Burr Grinder

  • Large Capacity: The sturdy clear plastic bean hopper with finger guard holds a whopping 1.3 pounds of beans and features an integrated trap door that allows for easy changing of beans without emptying.
  • Consistent Grind: The stable stainless steel 58mm burr grinders are flat (rather than conical) and remove for easy cleaning. Designed to operate at a low RPM (rotations per minute) so that minimal heat builds up and is transfered to your beans.
  • Stepless Adjustment: Twist and pull the adjustment pin to advance the beans from the hopper into the grinder. You can adjust as the grinder is working.
  • Doser: The adjustable doser gives you control of measuring out between 5 and 8 grams per pull
Pros
  • Stepless Control - Revel in having precise control over the consistency of your grind.
  • Large Hopper - Super large hopper holds 1.3 pounds of beans.
  • Doser Control - The precise and manual operation you get from the doser is a nice touch if you want complete control over how much is loaded into your portafilter.
Cons
  • No Reference Marks - Because there is no end to the turns on the step less knob, there are no markers to help you recall your grind settings from each use.
  • Too Much Machine? - Unless you plan on regularly grinding the large quantity this grinder can process, you may want to look into a smaller, less robust machine.
How Does it Compare?

The Mazzer Minis come in three configurations: a 58mm Mazzer Mini Flat Burr Espresso Grinder with a physical doser on the front, a 64mm Mazzer Mini Electronic Type A Espresso Grinder with programmable dosing functionality atop a funnel, and the 64mm Mazzer Mini Electronic Type B Espresso Grinder with a funnel and dosing begins when you tap the portafilter up against it. Also throw into the mix the branded Rocket Mazzer Minis which are essentially similar in a matching casing style for Rocket espresso machines.

A shopper asked: Would this work well if I am only grinding enough coffee to make one shot of espresso every day? If not, what would you suggest that is still a very high quality machine? Thank you Nov 3, 2013

Teri KStaff: You can certainly use this Mazzer Flat Burr Espresso Grinder for one shot a day, however a doser model machine is generally better for multiple drinks all in a row, as that doser will hold a variety of grounds that you will find are stale by the next day. You can add to the hopper only the beans that you will need for your one shot or you could look to a doserless model like the Rancillio Rocky, or the Baratza Vario grinders. Hope this helps! madeline g asked: Mazzer Mini doser is supposed to be adjustable but I can't figure out how. I inevitably spill the ground espresso over the sides of the portafilter because two pushes on the doser isn't enough for a double and three pushes sends the ground espresso over the top and sides of the portafilter. What is the proper method for adjusting the doser?

Also, the hopper has a black plastic pull to send beans to the grinder. Is there any way to control how many beans are sent?

Thanks a lot

landon: Hey Madeline G.

Hope this helps.
i have the same problem, so don't feel bad.

2 things:

first, i try and pull a half dose on the third pull in order to fill the portafilter.
(i have not tried to "adjust the dose." i do not know how to do that.)

second, i flatten the coffee in the portafilter with my finger over the dose container (i remove the black top lid) and therefore the excess grinds fall back into the doser.
(this is before i tamp the coffee.)
make sense?

my question for you is, which i constantly get confused about--which way do you turn the grind setting to make the grind courser or finer?

the label with the arrow confuses me overtime i try and make an adjustment.
do you turn the ring clockwise to make it courser or finer?
thanks for your input and good luck!
happy to chat anytime.
I love the mazzer mini and use it every morning.
but i need some feedback from others to get better at it!

cheers~

John F: The easy answer is that there is a knob that adjusts the dose UNDER the guard in the dosing area. Just take that guard off, and you can turn the knob in the middle of the doser compartments to get larger or smaller doses.

The more complex answer has to do with how you are testing for the right dose. When you do the adjustment, weigh a single dose, and make sure it is 7 g. You will then need to calibrate the grinder itself (follow instructions for this in manual: the grinder has to be ON when you adjust the level of the grind) to make sure that one dose delivers one ounce of espresso, or two doses delivers two ounces.

The black "pull" is really a sort of lid. If you're making a lot of espresso, just close it; That way, if the grind isn't right, you can adjust it without actually grinding more coffee until you're ready. That is, it allows you to control how many beans are ground at one time: if the area is full, it usually allows for two doses.

I hope this is helpful.

Victor W: I don't think it is really "adjustable," rather do your best given 5 to 8 grams per pull. Setting the timer about half way grinds about the right amount for a double.

As for the plastic pull, it is so you can close the hopper and take it off without beans spilling all over the counter.

A shopper asked: Will this grinder be equally good for espresso to french press coffee? Jun 19, 2014
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
Teri KStaff: This Mazzer Mini is really designed for espresso only, and so I would not recommend it for French Press coffee as you don't need a unit calibrated for fine espresso grinding like this Mazzer. If you're looking for a grinder for French Press, I would suggest a lower priced option like the Baratza Encore.

A shopper asked: Will this grinder work well for french press and cold brew coffee? I am looking for a grinder that will work for all grind types well.

Thanks

Teri KStaff: This Mazzer Mini is designed for espresso only and is step less, which means that moving back and forth to different grind settings is tricky because notations on the grinder aren't super clear. I would not recommend it for French Press and cold brew coffee as you don't need a unit calibrated for fine espresso grinding like this Mazzer. If you're looking for a grinder for multiple applications, I would suggest a lower priced option like the Baratza Encore.

Teri KStaff: No, this Mazzer Mini Flat Burr Espresso Grinder- V2 is a doser version in powder coated silver (also available in black) with no Rocket marking. The Rocket logo Mazzer in a shiny stainless steel finish is the Rocket Mazzer Mini Electronic Grinder- Type A. It can be found via the link below:

Few coffee grinders seem especially designed to produce the fine and uniform granularity needed for espresso. My old Rancilio Rocky did not, and I broke two Baratza Precisos trying to get the calibration right. The Mazzer Mini is Germanic in its engineering, though of course it comes from Italy. I've only had it for 6 weeks or so, but I am very pleased with its solidity and its ease of calibration for grinding beans for espresso. It makes great coffee. Two minor inconveniences might be mentioned: the unit comes with a doser; and it has a timer in lieu of a simple on/off switch. To me these are minor points.
