The purpose of the rubber piece seems to just be an insulator to protect you from the hot metal of the wand as you move it to the three positions. The chrome is a sleeve piece over the nozzle so it does move a bit. That's good because the tip of the nozzle (black plastic piece) is removable by unscrewing it which allows complete cleaning of the sleeve, wand, and nozzle.
Steam out the wand before using to clear out condensation. Overall the wand is easy to use and quite effective at frothing. Apr 3, 2013

The Nespresso machines will all brew the same way as far as espresso. In our tests, we found the steam arm on this Maestria preformed pretty great! We did, however, get a bit denser microfoam from the stand alone frothers from Nespresso, the Aeroccino and Aero3.

For detailed care instructions, please refer to your machine's user manual. We recommend that you also incorporate the following into your cleaning routine:
- Descale every two to three months. We recommend using Dezcal.
- Soap out water tank and drip tray every few days.
