great espressoReview by coffeeann

This is my 3rd pod machine that I've owned. The first 2 being Keurig and CBTL. Here are my comparisons.
1- Like the CBTL, Nespresso U uses a high bar pressure for espresso.
Nespresso U uses 19 bar which is higher than the CBTL, which uses 15 for espresso. The Keurig that I owned did not have an espresso option.
2-Like the CBTL, Nespresso U performs a self clean.
The differences are the Nespresso U does the self clean by passing water internally which then drains inside to the drain cup reservoir, automatically ejects the capsule into the holding reservior after brewing. All this is done in a few seconds and is very quiet.
The CBTL does the self cleaning by passing water to the outside of the machine and into both the internal reservoir and outside drain cup.
The capsule of the CBTL that is used doesn't automatically get dropped into the holding reservoir. That is manually done when the machine is opened to place a new capsule in, whereas the Nespresso U is dropped automatically by the machine after the coffee is made.
3-Nespresso uses 19 bar to achieve great espresso. The only other machine at this writing to use that much is Starbucks newest Verismo model. CBTL uses 15 bar.
4- The U wins out overall for simplicity and no frills appearance in design , size, and color range. I really appreciate the movable water storage tank and the magnetized cup holder. The water tank is a good size for refills if you make espresso once or twice a day, is easily removed for cleaning and has a tight seal on the bottom to fit snuggly with the machine.
5- Nespresso capsules are delish, but you can also find generic brand capsules online for both espresso and lungo that DO fit Nespresso machines and are listed as such to fit Nespresso. The generic capsules are made with plastic v.s. aluminum of the Nespresso. Both will arrive 2 days mail.
6- Last, Seattle Coffee Gear is great with reviews on equipment- Thanks to Kat and company, and their shipping was great on this product. Also was well packaged.

awesomeness in a small packageReview by ann

For the convenience of pod coffee, espresso in particular, the Nespresso U meets the mark.
Great small foot print for a small kitchen counter, and simple elegance in appearance. Also the magnet cup holder, movable water tank, and 3 cup size choices makes this a winner.
To see it in action, check out Gail's video here at Seattle Coffee Gear.
At the Nespresso web site, there are a great number of coffee capsule choices to choose from. The sampling that comes with the machine is a good start.
The information packet has easy to follow instructions and the machine is extremely easy to use and is of high quality.

I've never been a big espresso drinker before I got the U as an impulse buy in a William Sonoma. It came with sakes of their then 16 different pods (they've since added 3 new flavored ones), and I went through all 16 in 3 days - even the decaf ones taste good. I've since tapered off a bit, thanks to the relatively high cost and inconvenience of having to order at least 50 more capsules (the minimum order qty on the web site) every 2 weeks. I do love it though. As an engineer, I can appreciate a good design, and I don't see any flaws with this one. It's simple, clean and small. The only messes happen when I'm so brain dead that I drop the capsule in and close the lid (which starts the process) without putting a cup under the spout. I highly recommend this product, keeping in mind I've never really drank much espresso before this machine, so I don't have much to compare it to:)

Lukewarm espressoReview by ChristyC

I really wanted this to work, after having read great reviews for this machine as to convenience and taste. The convenience and taste aspects are definitely true - really easy to make, no cleanup, and great tasting espresso. But, the coffee does not come out of the machine hot. I took several measurements between the espresso and lungo brews (I don't use the smallest ristretto brew) and they ranged between 120-130 F. I like my espresso at 180 F. Adding hot milk will help bring up the temp, bu if you are someone who drinks espresso sans milk or cream, you will not enjoy this. You end up having to throw your espresso in the microwave for 20 seconds - definitely inconvenient!
