Features & Functionality of the Rancilio MD 80 AT
Discover the professional features and automatic functionality that makes Rancilio grinders the preferred choice among some of the world's finest cafes.
- Commercial Capacity: The powerful motor and grinder unit of this machine can turn beans into espresso in two seconds flat. Designed to deliver over 30 pounds of ground coffee in an hour, there isn't a coffee shop or cafe around able to provide demand that exceeds the Rancilio's ability to deliver.
- Steel Burr Grinding: The heavy duty 75mm burr grinding plates are made of tempered steel and operate at a super low RPM (rotations per minute) to prevent unnecessary heat build-up and transfer to your beans. The grinder's motor is housed in thermal protection to prevent overheating.
- Coffee Dosing System: The MD 80's dosing system adjusts from 5 to 7.5 grams per dose.
- Fully Automatic: This fully automatic grinder has a sensor in the dosing chamber, which automatically turns the coffee grinder on and off so you can keep a usable amount of ground coffee in the dosing chamber.
- Huge Bean Hopper: Made of blue tinted molded plastic with a black lid, the Rancilio hopper keeps 3 pounds of coffee beans well sealed so they remain fresh and ready to grind. The blue tint is designed to prevent UV rays from damaging the beans while they are in the hopper.

Tried and True
Review by Older Gent -
Quality Value Price Rocky is 10 years old this year. It has been used every day and sadly doesn't get cleaned very often and I have used oily looking beans many times. Never had a problem with any part of it. I get a great constant espresso shot every time. Generally I will just grind enough for us in the morning; with guests over I will fill up the hopper somewhat and my guests don't have to hear the grinder. When we entertain everyone wants coffee because ours is very good.
Pros:
Easy To Use, Easy To Clean
Cons:
Messy(Posted on 5/15/12)

Great Grinder with one hiccup.
Review by Jed -
Quality Value Price This grinder is easy to use and has great fineness resolution with many setting notches. It really picked up my coffee game.
The only qualm I have is that the doser doesn't *quite* match the portafilter baskets. One dose in the single shot, or two in the double, mean the 58mm tamper will hit the basket edges and stop well before you've put 30 lbs of pressure on the coffee. I have to put just a bit more coffee in the basket to get that compression. With that said I've loved the machine.
Pros:
Great Taste, Easy To Use

Review by MZ -
Quality Value Price basically enough for home use. and if u have a good espresso machine and you're an experienced user, this should be enough. there's only one problem: the doser is too close to the supporter underneath.
Pros:
Great Taste, Easy To Use
Cons:
Doser is too low(Posted on 9/29/11)

Great Purchase!
Review by Rolaids -
Quality Value Price We purchased this to go with our new Saeco Xelsis at our small business. We use it to grind decaf and one dose is the exact amount for the Saeco. It is very quiet and very well built!

Best Bang for the Buck
Review by Embs -
Quality Value Price GET the doser model. Despite what others say, it's nice to have a place to scrape your portafilter off before tamping. A great grinder overall, we keep ours on about setting 4 or 5 for perfect shots of lavazza super crema from the quickmill anita.
Pros:
Easy To Use, Commercial Grade
Cons:
No cons so far(Posted on 10/11/10)

Best for the Price?
Review by Verne -
Quality Value Price This is a fine machine, well built, well designed, with easy grind adjust and quick action. Frankly I don't see why you would need anything more expensive. ALSO..no waste! Unlike other grinders I have had that do now allow you to put excess grinds back into the holding chamber. Highly recommended.
Pros:
Great Taste, Easy To Use, Easy To Clean, Quick Brewing, Commercial Grade
Cons:

The Best Espresso machine I had!

Quality Value Price I purchase several months ago an espresso maker from [...], the brand was Cuisinart. The Cusinart was OK but my wife did not like it and I returned. Then I purchased the Rancilio Silvia 3, and now we all enjoy the best espresso and cappuccino in our lives.
Pros:
Great Taste, Easy To Use, Easy To Clean, Quick Brewing, Large Water Container

So far, so good
Review by Highly Caffeinated -
Quality Value Price After many years of using cheap machines I recently purchased a Silvia. Made due with my cheap burr grinder for a while then decided to upgrade. Did allot of research and for the price vs. quality decided on a Rocky. The general consensus out there is to go with a doserless. Personally I decided to buck that trend and get the doser model. I like being able to turn it on and let it grind while I do other things as opposed to being glued there with my portafilter. The main trade off is you may have some ground coffee in the doser from your previous grind. I do not believe my senses are that in tune to be able to call this a serious design flaw. If you are the kind of person that obsesses over every aspect of your espresso process, the doser may not be for you. If you are serious about your espresso but realistic about your ability to discern the country of origin of the bean and what day of the week it was roasted on I would recommend the doser model.[...]

Good Basic Grinder
Review by E61 -
Quality Value Price Good value for the money. If you're unable to spend more this is a good choice. The main draw back for home use is the relatively limited number of grinding steps. For some beans the grind fineness seems to be between steps.
Pros:
Easy To Use
Cons:
Messy(Posted on 3/30/10)
