John B asked: Hi Gals... I have a Saeco Aroma, going to purchase the un-pressurized portafilter, now my understanding is that I use the basket from the portafilter that came with the unit. I received a RW 53mm tamper as a gift a while ago (I know that you don't need to use it using the pressurized unit) however it does not fit the basket, where did I go wrong? Jun 8, 2013
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
Teri KStaff: The 53mm tamper is the correct tamper for the Saeco Aroma machine- so I am not sure why yours isn't working! Is this basket below the one you are using? If so, you should have no problem, unless the tamper is maybe mis-marked? They have a light etching of the size on the tamper itself, so check that out to be sure you have a 53mm. Sorry I can't be of more assistance!

John B: Yea, both the box 21320-53 and the tamper indicate 53mm and yes that's the basket. Now my issue is do I buy another basket or another tamper.??? But thanks for the help! :) Jun 10, 2013

John B: Just an update.... borrowing a friends digital caliper... the tamper comes in at 55mm and the basket 53mm.. so a new tamper? Know anyone who can use a 55mm tamper? Jun 16, 2013
Reply to John Good answer? Yes (0) No (0)
Teri KStaff: I am sorry that tamper seems to be mismarked! If the tamper is measuring 55mm, that is unique, as we don't even offer that size! Sorry! :) Jun 17, 2013

A shopper asked: base made by 100% strainless steel??? Jan 13, 2014

Teri KStaff: Yes, the base of this Rattleware tamper is 100% stainless steel. Jan 13, 2014

A shopper asked: I have the Breville Infuser Espresso Machine with a 54mm portafilter. Since Rattleware does not make a 54mm tamper would I be asking for trouble if I purchased the 53mm tamper? How much of an affect does the 1mm loss in diameter have? Jan 2, 2014
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
Teri KStaff: If you use a smaller tamper than what your portafilter requires, then you may end up with a rim of grounds around the edge of the basket that may not be tamped. I tried the 53mm Rattleware tamper with the Infuser, and actually found that it worked just fine. The taper of the Infuser's basket means that the 53mm tamper actually sat down into the basket a bit further and the shot still extracted about the same. Hope this helps! Jan 2, 2014

sue p asked: Do any of your tampers come in 53mm? Nov 14, 2013
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
Teri KStaff: Yes we do offer many tampers in 53mm, and this Rattleware tamper is the lowest priced option. Choose 53mm in the drop down menu under "Size." If 53mm is not showing there, we may be out of stock, but feel free to call in and check with us if necessary! 866-372-4734 Nov 15, 2013

dawna asked: We have the Saeco Via Venezia Expresso Maker. How does Rattleware Stainless Steel Tamper compare with the Espro Calibrated Tamper (Convex), both 53mm?
Okay, all you expert coffee drinkers...please give your expert advice!
Aug 4, 2012
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
Kaylie KStaff: First I would mention that the Via Venezia does not need tamped if you are using the pressurized portafilter that came with your machine. If, however, you are using the non-pressurized portafilter you will tamp, and either tamper will work fine. The biggest advantage to the Espro calibrated tamper is that it clicks when you reach the 30# of pressure. Aug 9, 2012

Feel good in the hand. Gives the impression of being a well made product and it is. The finish on the plastic part of the handle helps to keep the hand in place when tamping, Happy with the purchase.

I purchased the 58mm version to use with my new Pasquini Livia G4 Automatic. It's perfect. Great weight, solid construction. I was originally concerned that the plastic handle may be an issue if it ever comes loose but after using it a a couple times a day for the last month I can't see how that's possible. Great construction and value for the price.

I purchased this in tandem with a non-pressurized portafilter for my Via Venezia, and I chose this tamper because it was the least expensive. It's heavy and super durable, but I find the grip is a little uncomfortable in my hand. I would opt for one with a flatter grip if I were to do it again, but this thing will last forever.

Great tamper! I just bought a Saeco Aroma from the fine folks at SCG. It comes with a pressurized portafilter. You don't have to tamp the espresso with this machine, but some say a very light tamp can't hurt, plus I ordered a non-pressurized portafilter, so I will need one for that anyway. It's a beautiful tamper. The rubber like handle material has a nice grip. Nice and heavy, and the 53mm size fits my Aroma basket like a glove. It's a really good tamper for the money. I did try it out on my stock Aroma portafilter with a super light tamp and twist, and it did seem to come out a little better tasting. Plus it's just fun to use, and looks cool.

Function is pretty self explanatory. This is very solidly built, super sturdy, and nice and heavy for its size, which is pretty important as tampers go. The rubber grip on the handle is comfortable and well engineered. 57mm size fits my Pasquini Livietta 2 portafilter perfectly. I can't imagine it ever breaking or wearing out, but I would buy this again in a heartbeat. Oh, forgot to mention that Seattle Coffee Gear is AWESOME!!!

This is my first real tamper (58mm)to go with my Rancilio Silvia and Doserless Rocky Grinder. Has a great weight to it and the design and handle are comfortable. At half the price of some other tampers it seems to work just fine. I wanted a calibrated tamper since this is my first good quality machine and grinder but couldn't justify the cost.

Great value for the money, Easy To Clean, Easy To Use, Commercial Grade

It was alot less $ than some of the other "heavy metal" tampers. I cant imagine the more expensive ones being that much better. I've used torque tampers before and I like the automatic 30lbs of pressure tamp, but I don't like their cost ! This tamper works fine and appears to be bullet proof !!!

This tamper has a good feel (heft and balance) to it. Wouldn't change anything except the clearance to the opening is not perfect; its a little to much. The 55mm size would be too large, however. Well worth the cost. I won't replace this, even though a nice exotic wood handle would please my eyes and hand.

Previous to this tamper, I used a cheap metal one. This tamper is much easier to use and allows the correct technique for tamping. The weight is good, it allows you to get the force needed easily.

I have seen an improvement on my shots with this product. If you're thinking about skimping on your tamper, forget it. You can't compromise on good espresso!

Commercial Grade, Easy To Use

Heavy and solid tamper that makes giving just the right pressure easy. It is a perfect fit for my machine. the only con (and it is a very small one) is that sometimes some grinds will cling to the side of the tamper and drop on the counter.

Messy

This is a must have! I had a cheap aluminum tamper I bought for about $6 locally. I wanted to get a beautiful Reg Barber, but since I dropped about $1000 in the last few months I did not want to spend $100 on a tamper (at least right now). This tamper makes such a difference for two reasons. 1) it has a weight that makes tamping easy and even 2) it is truly 58mm and covers the whole portafilter, which the cheaper tamper was a millimeter or two too small! The handle is a hard resin so it will not hurt the finish of the portafilter when you knock the coffee to level it. Bottom line is a good tamper is a must!

Easy To Use, Easy To Clean, Commercial Grade

Funny detail: I had a tamper with a very modest crown and the center stayed clean but when I twist this flat tamper, a small amount of coffee collects there when I twist it. It seems minor but it disrupts the tamped surface of the coffee in the center and makes a place for the water to leak through.

It's easy enough to wipe it clean each time but that's just an extra step you don't need if your tamper has even the smallest crown.

Obviously, this is not a rap on this particular tamper. It's well made and a pleasure to use. But I wouldn't get another flat tamper.

Easy To Use
