will this scale work with a portafilter holder or do i need a special plate to put on top of it before putting my portafilter holder/handle on it?
Alan R on Apr 23, 2016
Best Answer: Yes. “Chopped” or “Naked” portafilters fit best with the aerial pad in its normal position. Spouted portafilters can be used with the aerial pad flipped to provide a rest for the portafilter.Enter an answer to this question.

With the portafilter plate can this be used for coffee too or should I get the original one?
A shopper on Jan 9, 2017
Best Answer: The Lunar can certainly be used for pour over methods, but it will be a tight fit. I'd recommend the original, you'll appreciate the extra space (especially if you brew with a Chemex or into a carafe).

Moved to a new levelReview by Philkach
Absolutely amazing! I purchased a Rocket Cellini and Super Jolly Mazzer three years ago. I have used a wide variety of coffee beans and I’ve been very satisfied with my results. Until today.

I purchased the Acaia Lunar not knowing whether it was useful. After using it for a day I am amazed at what I’ve been missing. In the past I’ve enjoyed the espresso never could taste the nuances. Now after weighing each shot, I can tell the various hints in the coffee beans. Absolutely amazing!!!

No one with quality espresso machines should be without a set of scales. It doesn’t have to be the Acaia Lunar as there are other quality scales available. However I would highly recommend this model.

It has moved my espresso making to a new level! (Posted on 12/30/2017)
Expensive, but no regrets!Review by Jane
This little scale has made my life just a little bit easier, at least in the espresso making department.

I will grant you it isn't inexpensive; however, it does the job and does it well. It easily accommodates my portafilter, it fits very well on the drip tray of my Rocket Giotto, and it does a great job of tracking time and weight of shots from beginning to end. As an added bonus, unlike most other scales, I don't have to worry if it gets splashed with a a bit of water or coffee.

Reduces Unknowns To NothingReview by watchhillian
Let's get something straight right off the bat. $220 is a stupid amount of money to spend on a coffee scale. It is 1/3 the cost of my Racillio Silvia w/PID and fully 2/3 the cost of my Rancillo Rocky w/o doser. I am a complete beginner and I plead guilty to the notion you get what you pay for...up to a point, anyway.

I spent two months researching home espresso machines after I got addicted to Cafe con Leche at Cuban Coffee Queen (CCQ) in Key West, Florida. They use a commercial grade Rancillio which, I must admit, had some influence on what I finally bought. After watching CCQ in action every day for two months and comparing that to all the videos on SCG, two different approaches to making coffee, one driven by commercial needs to get volume out fast and the other slanted more to the perfect shot, I decided to to do everything I could to reduce my learning curve for the fast perfect shot to the lowest possible denominator.

It is true a little knowledge is dangerous. A double shot grind between 16 and 18 grams, brew time including pre-infusion totaling 25-30 seconds, and two oz. of espresso equaling a a dead on 56 grams became etched in my mind. Rocket science? Damn near. In any case, I am old and wise enough to know I could never pull this off simply winging it.

Enter the Acaia Lunar. A mind boggling plethora of features are promised in the promotional literature, all of which look very tempting, but, really, how to tame the thing to rifle shoot the tasks at hand? Forget the written literature it comes with. Forget going to the Acaia website for further help. Do NOT forget to go to YouTube and watch every Lunar video available to separate the wheat from the chaff.

Armed with even more dangerous knowledge, I ventured forth, Acaia at my side, to conquer the espresso wars. And I am here to tell you, with a few to be expected false starts and dumb, newbie errors, I was able to make about the best latte I ever tasted (Lavazza Super Crema, bottomless portafilter) dialing in the aforementioned proper ratios with the added benefit of some fine tuning in my beloved Auber PID, another $200 expenditure which makes no sense up front and invaluable in retrospect, but that's a subject for a different review..

OK, that's the long version. Here's the short one: when you consider I blew away $450 at CCQ in Key West buying Cafe con Leche's for me and my wife, maybe $220 for a proper time saving tool is a deal after all. You don't need one of these if you've been pulling shots for a while and like things the way they are, but if you're new or want absolute control reducing the variables to nothing, the Acaia Lunar is hard to beat., (Posted on 4/12/2017)
