Product Description

Get back to simple espresso with the Ascaso Basic semi-automatic espresso machine. Included is all a budding barista needs to start pulling great shots: pressurized, non-pressurized and pod baskets, and a swing-out steam wand with a removable panarello sleeve. That's it, no nested menus, no tiny dials, no interval programming diagrams; just tasty espresso at your fingertips. Designed and built in Spain, the Basic's boldly minimalist shape is sure to liven up any caffeine-deprived kitchen.

Features and Functionality of the Ascaso Basic Espresso Machine

  • Simple Controls - Three toggle buttons (power, brew, steam) and a steam knob keep controls easy to use.
  • All the Baskets - Each machine includes pressurized and non-pressurized baskets in single and double shot sizes, as well as a dedicated ESE pod basket.
  • Heated Group - The Basic's outsized thermoblock nestles directly over the brew group, ensuring a heated path for your espresso.
  • 3-Way Solenoid - A solenoid valve releases back pressure after brewing, helping to alleviate the messy "portafilter sneeze."
  • Tamper Included - A curved plastic 57mm tamper is included for beginning baristas.
  • Design Cohesion - The clean, streamline moderne design of the Basic looks gorgeous, even cast in plastic.
  • Hot Portafilter - The brew group and portafilter of the Basic get quite hot, it's worth giving it a few extra minutes to heat up (even with its on-demand thermoblock).
  • Small Footprint - The Basic's pared down feature set lets it squeeze its dimensions down to a demure 9x12, small enough for any kitchen.
  • Form Over Function - Small functional faux pas detract from AAA design chops, namely the drip grate's small cutouts and the cup warmer's sloped surface.
  • Slow Steamer - Our test unit's steam controls don't offer much feedback while it comes up to steam temperature.
How Does it Compare?

With internals near-identical to the larger Dream Up, the Basic offers a budget option for those who don't require an all-aluminum case.

Tips and Tricks

Brace that base, folks! The lightweight design of the Basic needs a helping hand while locking in its portafilter.

What type of steamer is on this machine? Traditional or Panarello?
A shopper on Mar 3, 2017
Best Answer: The Basic has a panarello steam tip. However, I often remove the sleeve to steam traditionally with the pinhole opening underneath. Hope this helps!

Solid little machine Review by Mr coffee
Had this machine for about a month. It's reliable and consistent, easy to use and learn on. For me, this machine is a jump up from my earlier cheapo $100 machine, and it makes WAY better tasting shots. Very happy. I have no complaints. Another review I read elsewhere criticized this little machine for two flaws. 1. A poorly designed drip tray with small inlet holes for drips to pass thru. This has not been a problem at all during my use, it really doesn't make a mess or "pool up" 2. The cup warmer up top is slanted and lacks rails. This is true, the top isn't a well designed cup holder. It would work, but seems a little precarious, like if the machine was bumped the cups would fall off. So for me, that's the one criticism of this machine. Is it enough to justify spending hundreds more for another machine? Nope! I warm my cup up by running some hot water thru a brew cycle before making a shot. I bought this from Seattle coffee gear, it shipped in one day, fast service and a good little machine.
