Roast your way to the perfect cup of joe with the Behmor 1600 Plus Home Coffee Roaster. With Behmor's patent pending smoke suppression technology and the ability to roast up to 1 pound of fresh green coffee beans, this roaster makes it easy to say yes to skipping the pre-roasted coffee and declare a resounding "heck yeah!" to roasting your own perfect blend.

Features & Functionality of the Behmor 1600 Plus Home Coffee Roaster

  • Pre-programmed Settings: The Behmor 1600 Plus Home Coffee Roaster offers user-friendly pre-programmed settings for a simple start into the wonderful world of coffee bean roasting. Select the amount of green coffee beans you would like to roast (1/4 pound, 1/2 pound or 1 pound), the appropriate roast program/time (A, B, C, D) and type of bean profile (P1, P2, P3, P4, P5). Hit start and let the 1600 Plus roast its way into your heart.
  • Profiles: The pre-programmed profiles indicate how much heat will be applied to your beans. P1 is the hottest profile, which makes it the fastest roast time. P5 offers the least amount of heat and in turn, offers the slowest roast time.
  • Roast Programs: The convenient roast programs allow the user to easily change the length of the selected profile.
  • Adjustable Time Increments: This function allows you to adjust the pre-prgrammed amount of time to suit your taste and desired roast. Increase the roast time by increments of 15 seconds and decrease the time by increments of 10 seconds.
  • Cool Function: Begin the cool down cycle at any time during the roast by simply selecting the cool button.
  • Interior Light: Turn on the interior light and watch the roasting magic happen!
  • OFF: This button is pretty self explanatory. However, it is wise to note that this button should never be pressed during a roast cycle, unless it is a true emergency. Turning the roaster off mid roast cycle may cause excess smoke and could lead to fire.
  • Roasting Drum: The removable roasting drum makes adding and removing beans a breeze.
  • Chaff Tray: This tray catches all of the chaff that falls from the roasting drum and is also removable for an easy clean-up.
  • Unattended Safety Function: Roasting coffee beans is an interactive process and thus, the roaster should never be left unattended during a roasting cycle. When a roasting cycle is about 75% complete, the Behmor 1600 Plus likes to make sure you're still around by starting a 30 second count-down. If you do not press start within those 30 seconds, the roaster assumes you have walked away and automatically begins the cool down cycle while flashing err7 on the digital screen.
How Does it Compare?

The new Behmor 1600 Plus Home Coffee Roaster offers the following new features that can only be accessed during a roast cycle:

  • Temperature Reading: Press "A" to view the exhaust channel temperature or "B" for the chamber wall temperature.
  • Rosetta Stone Time: Press "C" as soon as you hear 1st crack and the Behmor 1600 Plus will begin a new estimated count-down to the approximate time of when you should hear 2nd crack.
  • Adjust Motor Speed: Press "D" to adjust the motor speed.
  • Adjust Power to Heating Element: Adjust the power to the heating element by the following increments: P1 = 0%, P2 = 25%, P3 = 50%, P4 = 75%, P5 = 100%
Tips and Tricks

NOTE: The Behmor 1600 Roaster is designed specifically for 120V, 60 hz power sources, and will not function with a step up/down transformer.

To help understand what pre-programmed profile you should roast with, Behmor offers the following examples of standard profiles by the origin of your green coffee beans:

  • P1 & P2: All Central, Peruvian and Colombian beans.
  • P3: Brazilian, African, Southeast Asian, Malabar, Jamaican Blue Mountain and Yauco Selecto.
  • P4 & P5: Kona and other low grown island beans.

Can this machine be used totally manual like the Gene Cafe or a Fresh Roast popper-type?
Nathan M on Jan 5, 2015
Best Answer: The machine has 5 pre-programmed roast profiles, and you can set the length of time that the machine will complete the profile selected with the 4 programs. Additionally, you can increase or decrease the length of time for each stage in intervals as it is brewing. If you prefer the hottest temperature, you would be selecting the P1 profile, but you will certainly want to experiment with small batches to find what works best for the roast degree you're looking for and the type of beans you're using!

Can the Behmor 1600 Plus produce a French Roast?
A shopper on Nov 15, 2014
Best Answer: I have the older 1600. I can do a very dark roast e.g. viennese or french roast by several methods (or combinations) - 1. increase roasting time using the + button, 2. preheating the roaster with no beans in it for up to a minute, 3. overstating amount of coffee - pressing 1 lb or 1/2 lb button and have less that 1/2 or 1lb..this causes more roasting time. NOTE: BEWARE! doing this can over roast you beans and cause fires inside the roaster. Remember the beans will be darker then you see by 10-15 stop it before they look like a french or viennese roast. PAY CLOSE ATTENTION AT THE FINAL STAGE...

Can I get a dark roast using the Behmor 1600 Plus?
A shopper on Mar 30, 2015
Best Answer: Yes. However, it is important to note that the Behmor 1600 is not intended to roast coffee to levels known as Vienna, French, or Italian.

how long does it take to roast 1lb of beans on average?
Cody C on Feb 16, 2017
Best Answer: I've owned my Behmor 1600 Plus about a year now and my steps have become routine. It takes me ~40 min start to finish, including roasting and cooling when you can multitask, but use a kitchen timer to ensure you're back at the helm when required.

My steps: 80 second pre-warm, while it's warming weigh 16oz beans, roast 19ish minutes depending on beans (hit start again at 13 1/2 minutes to avoid "unattended" error), cool (13 minute automatic), then spread beans out on a cookie sheet for the night and vacuum the machine.

How effective is the cooling cycle? Is it comparable to an outside cooling tray? Do I have to factor in the cooling time because it cools down slower than a commercial roaster?
Carsten on Nov 25, 2015
Best Answer: Carsten,

That's a good question. The cooling cycle is not comparable to an outside cooling tray -- it will work slower than that. However, in my experience the Behmor's cooling cycle works fine with the way the roaster works overall. The cooling is factored into the roasting profiles, and as you "dial in" your beans, you will be doing so with the cooling cycle as part of the profile. I always try to get them out of the roaster as soon as the cooling cycle finishes, however, and let them finish cooling in the air.

I got a Behmor 1600 Plus for Christmas. I just roasted my second batch (1/4 lb.) using P1 per the manual. About a minute and a half before the eight-minute cycle ended I saw smoke coming out of the front. It wasn't heavy, but it was definitely visible. It was well into second crack. I let it complete the cycle and the roast looks dark but not burnt. Should I have hit cool right away? (I guess I'll find out after it off-gases, but I was hoping to get some other viewpoints.)
David H on Jan 11, 2017
Best Answer: You hit cool way too late. This roaster will inherently still roast a little bit after the cool button is hit. It just can't dissipate all that heat quickly. For a darker roast, I typically cool right after i hear 2nd crack. The door can also be slightly opened to cool faster, but this will also produce more smoke. I recommend roasting outside or in a garage. This roaster does produce smoke and will stink up (or add delicious odor) to your house for a day.

Pro tip, have some cotton gloves nearby when roasting. If you accidentally hot cool too late, then another option is to remove the drum after you hit cool. This will cease the roast quicker. Be careful because the hot drum will still be running. Shake the beans around to cool, or transfer them to a metal colander.

If I order one of these, I'll need to get green beans too... any advice on where to order those?
davide on May 9, 2015
Best Answer: We carry Velton's Bonsai blend in unroasted. Other than that, I would try checking with your local coffee roasters.

Top notch customer service!Review by MJH
I've owned the Behmor 1600 for seven years now. It worked flawlessly until a few months ago when it started shutting off in the middle of the roast. Bob Rodda in customer service was exceptionally helpful. He worked with me step by step until we got the unit working flawlessly again. This is truly the best customer service I've experienced in almost 50 years! I also own a Behmor brewer and love it as well. I can't recommend this product and this company highly enough! worth getting used toReview by MemphisJoe
I have been using this machine for 6 years now after using a air roaster for another several years and I must say that I love the results considerably more. First off this is not a dark roaster, so if you like the west coast style of french roast then you probably need to look further for a more expensive machine. Me personally, I do not care to roast past origin. I live in the south and for the most part we care for our coffee on the city to full city roast...kinda medium roast. This machine is perfect for this type of roasting. Second I would say is that this machine does not roast "peddle to the metal" hot and fast so what you get is a more caramelized full body roast, another reason you would not want to roast deep dark roast in this machine. There are hacks, so you can get a french style coffee, but this machine, with so many safety features, is just not set up to roast that dark. The older mods like the one I currently use are less safety conscious and are easier to use, but I still feel that this machine is the best and most affordable on the market today. I've seen nothing better at this price pointReview by BoomRbust
I had the Behmor 1600, and was reasonably satisfied with it, but it lacked control. With the plus, you now can manually control the heating element, on five different settings, allowing one to design their own profile (not as hard as it sounds)! I prefer to do 300 grams instead of a pound, I find that the roast is more even. Most roasts that I do are in the City - Full City range, so if you are looking for a really dark roast, I'm not sure that this is the machine for you. My best roasts taste are comparable to the elite roasters (not saying quite as good, but comparable -- better than many micro-roasters). (Posted on 7/2/2016)
