Compare: Rocket Giotto vs. Nuova Simonelli Musica

We'd be hard pressed to choose between these two models ourselves, and we've had several customers ask us for a comparison between the two. The Rocket Giotto and Nuova Simonelli Musica are high end home machines with similar features and practical performance, but the Musica does have programming functionality and is NSF rated for use in a commercial application.

Watch Gail talk us through the different features and then whip up lattes on each machine so you can see how they perform.

I don't think partially raising the brew lever accomplishes anything in the way of preinfusion. At least on my Rocket Cellini Evoluzione, when I remove the portafilter and raise the brew lever, no water comes through the brew head screen until the brew pump is turned on. The big thing hanging down behind the brew head is a progressive preinfusion piston, and that is what actually performs the preinfusion automatically when the brew pump is initially turned on.

That's not entirely accurate; I know that Rocket has preinfusion built in, but if you push the lever up part way you will see trickling and it's about 3 bars of pressure - really this is just 'pre-moistening' and different coffees will respond either good or bad to it. But you will see some water at the 1/2 way point.

What about on the musica? Is there any way to do a manual preinfusion? The electronic preinfusion on the musica seems to be full pressure, not a real preinfusion.

No, it has the automated pre-infusion built into the brewing system and that's it -- you don't have any control over it.
