The response to SCG Rewards has been awesomely overwhelming! Which is exactly what we were hoping for, so we owe you one big, collective 'thank you!' Here, we should say that louder: Thank you - our customers rock!
Now that we're nearly a month in, we've had some time to learn what is and is not working within the program. Namely, the refund process can get confusing in cases where customers have already spent the rewards but are now returning the items that earned those rewards in the first place. Questions have included:
- Do I get to keep the items I spent my SCG Rewards on?
- Do I now have a negative SCG Rewards balance?
- Does the value of the SCG Rewards I used get deducted from my refund amount?
The answer was actually a 'yes' to the last question on the list. But that can be a bit confusing and, also, might leave customers feeling like they didn't have all the details they needed to make a decision. We don't want that at all!
So, effective today, we're instituting a new policy in our SCG Rewards program, which is a 35 day delay between earning rewards and being able to redeem rewards. How does this solve the confusion? Seattle Coffee Gear's return policy is 30 days. By delaying the redemption of earned rewards past the return period, we can be (reasonably) sure that you are happy with your equipment, have found the right fit and will be giving it a permanent spot in your home. You can then spend your SCG Rewards, removing concerns over what will happen with spent rewards from impacting your return decision.
Just to be clear, there is nothing you need to do on your end. The website will automatically release your SCG Rewards to you after 35 days and then you can use them as normal during the checkout process. You will also still be able to track your earnings and redemptions, you will just see a new addition to your account that lets you know when those earned points will be available to use.
This new policy may not be popular with everyone, and we understand that, but we do feel it is the best way to be transparent with customers about what is happening with their rewards. As always, please feel free to contact us with any concerns or suggestions regarding SCG Rewards. And, once again, thank you for being the coolest customers on planet Earth!
* SCG Rewards Terms and Conditions have been updated to reflect this change.
We hear this plea for help from many clients that call into Seattle Coffee Gear. It's very normal to feel overwhelmed when starting a new business, with the search for the appropriate equipment adding to this stress. That's actually why Seattle Coffee Gear Commercial exists - simply to help you understand your options and pick the right equipment for your goals!
And what's our goal, you may ask? Well, that is to provide a VIP consultative approach to all your coffee and espresso equipment needs. Whether you're a donut shop looking to add fresh brewed coffee or an office that would like to caffeinate its employees with an espresso machine, we're here for you! So, let us talk you down a bit: "Take a breath. Pick up the phone and dial 866-372-4734. Ask for SCG Commercial." *whew* That was easy, right?
Now, we know you might be a little nervous about making the call. We all feel this way sometimes (even us, and we deal with coffee all the time!), so we're going to take the mystery out of the process. In doing so, we hope you'll feel confident in jumping on a call with us!
What Should I Expect?
Once you've contacted us, you'll receive one-on-one consultation from a Commercial Equipment Specialist (this means they're experts on coffee and espresso equipment for businesses) that will listen to your business concept and needs. Based on what you tell us, we'll create a list of equipment that will work for your business. We'll thoroughly discuss it with you, tweak areas based on your feedback and create a customized quote.
This consultation and follow-up is typically done over the phone. However, if you live in the Seattle area, in-person consultations are certainly available to you.
What Do I Need to Know Before the Call?
We really only need you to know one thing: That you want to serve coffee in your business. We're willing to bet you've already decided on this, eh? From there, we'll help work through the multitude of options that exist, finding the right equipment for your business needs that fits inside your budget.
What Are Some Things to Consider?
As we said before, you really only need to know that you'd like to serve coffee or espresso in your business. However, here are some additional things that could be helpful to think about, both for your business in general and for the call.
- Where is your business located (city/state)?
- What is the coffee culture like in your area?
- What are the ways that you can stand out from similar businesses (differentiators)?
- What are the hours of day you will be operating and how many days per week?
- If you're open throughout the day, do you have plans to change your offerings?
- For example: Espresso/coffee with pastries in the morning and blended/iced espresso with sandwiches in the afternoon.
These considerations can help us hone in on the types of equipment you will need along with their proper configurations.
What Happens If I Order?
You will be provided pre-installation requirements, such as electrical and plumbing needs, for the major pieces. At this point, Seattle Coffee Gear will ship the equipment to a selected service provider, or your business location, for installation preparation. Your Commercial Equipment Specialist will introduce you to the service provider and then assist with coordinating the installation.
Do you feel like you have the weight of the world on your shoulders? Let SCG take some of that load off! There really is no obligation to working with us, so give us a call. We promise to listen, recommend and allow you the freedom to choose what best fits your needs. We like to call it a 'super easy, no pressure, consultative service.' That's a long name, though, so you can just call it the SCG Promise.
*whew* Long name, awesome purpose! The Spressa Mezzo is an ingenious creation, dreamed up by some folks right here in Seattle, that brings an ease to Aeropress coffee preparation. How so?
Well, it all starts with a flat box being shipped to you, ready for Ikea-style assembly (don't worry, the Spressa Mezzo is quite easy to put together, unlike that 75 piece dresser you bought last year). This little buddy, which is built with sustainable wood products, comes together to provide you with much needed plunger leverage.
So what are you waiting for? Watch Gail's video review, save your precious arms from a workout and pretty up your Aeropress setup!
This is a very valid question, indeed!
Before answering the question, however, let's talk about why you might wish to use the Technivorm Brew Basket with Manual Drip-Stop. There are really two potential reasons you may wish to use a different basket with the Technivorm Grand:
- You want to brew less than a full pot of coffee
- You want to use normal #4 filters rather than purchasing the Technivorm Grand flat bottom filters
Do either of these scenarios fit you? Then you're in luck, because you can indeed switch out the baskets! You will need a few other products (spray arm, brew basket lid and, of course, the brew basket with manual drip-stop), so keep this in mind. Alright, let's watch that video!
A Technivorm that is large enough for the office? Why, yes, we do have one of those! It also works for households with several coffee drinkers and extremely large mugs. You know, like 'larger than your head, it won't fit in any cup holder' large. We all have one, so no use denying it...
Now, back to the subject matter at hand: The Technivorm Moccamaster Grand Coffee Brewer! This bad boy brews right around 54 ounces of coffee, features a hot plate to keep your brew super drinkable and has a drop-stop switch so you can grab that first cup mid-brew without a massive mess. Now that's what we call forward thinking!
While we're talking about forward thinking and all, now would be the time to share an inside tip with you: You'll need to pick up some special large filters to use with the Grand.
Those are some of our favorite features, but we all know that a new product would be incomplete without a Crew Review from Gail, so check out the one below!
If we had a nickel for every time we heard this question, or a dime for every time a superautomatic was decommissioned due to this, we'd be rich (okay, maybe not rich, but we'd easily have a couple of dollars). However, we'd much rather save some machines then have the extra change jingling around!
The short answer is, unfortunately, that you cannot use oily beans in a superautomatic. Very dark and oily roasts clog up grinders and brew units over time, eventually leading to one very unhappy coffee robot. In superautomatic espresso machines, this is quite problematic, as you cannot take apart the grinders to give them a good, old fashioned cleaning. Eeeks!
If you're looking for more info, and we know you are, Gail and Miranda have the lowdown for you. Take it away, ladies!

We have a very exciting announcement this morning: The launch of SCG Rewards!
Sure, shopping for caffeine-inducing coffee products is fun in and of itself, but wouldn't it be better if doing so earned you a discount on future orders? That's where SCG Rewards come in. We think our customers (that's you!) are pretty much the bees knees and we want to give you a big ol' hug. Given our inability to do so, we've decided to thank you with every purchase!
How Do You Earn Rewards?
If you're signed up for SCG Rewards (get the deets below), then you simply shop as you normally would!
Here are the basics: Earn 1 point for every dollar you spend, with 50 points equaling $1 to be used on a future purchase. Each product, and your cart, tell you what you'll earn with the purchase.
Note: Commercial products and customers are excluded from earning reward points - sorry!
For more details on how the program works, check out this page that's completely dedicated to the nitty-gritty details!
How Do You Sign Up?
We don't want anyone to miss out on an opportunity to earn reward points, so customers that created an account prior to today are automatically enrolled in SCG Rewards!
If you're new to shopping at Seattle Coffee Gear, you can sign up while you're creating an account. Just leave the "I'd like to start earning rewards - sign me up!" box checked and you'll be up and running!
How Do You Redeem Rewards?
You'll need a minimum of $5 to redeem on an order, at which point you'll be able to apply them as a payment during checkout. If you're logged in, your cart will let you know how many points you currently have and will remind you how to apply them if you've reached the minimum.
You can also check your balance, see a full history of earning/redeeming reward points and change your notification subscriptions at any time by logging into your account!
How Excited Are We?
We're going to be really honest here: We squeal a little bit every time SCG Rewards get brought up around the office. We've wanted to implement something like this for awhile and we've put a lot of thought into the earning and redemption process. Our sincerest hope is that you like the program and that it provides value to you. After all, this is our 'thank you hug' substitute!
To get started today, just start shopping! If you have questions, don't hesitate to contact us via phone or email - we're here for you!
You may have noticed recently that our website has been sporting a new addition that doesn't quite fit in with our normal caffeine-centric product lineup: The Philips Airfryer!
How did this little marvel of cooking technology make its way to SCG? The answer lies in our awesome refurbishing department! We've worked with Saeco for years as their main refurbishing partner, decreasing the amount of sweet caffeine-producing machines that make their way to landfills - we love the environment! - and passing on slashed prices to the masses.
As such, Philips, owner of Saeco, approached us recently to do the same thing for their new Airfryer. Once we tried it, we knew we couldn't resist adding these fellas to our refurbishing line. I mean, the fries that come out of this thing are insane(ly good)!
So, how does it work? Simply place your food in the basket, set the temperature and timer, then wait. Depending on what you're cooking up, you may need to shake the basket about halfway through to ensure evenness, but it's pretty darn foolproof! Also, if you're using frozen fries, oil actually drips off of them during the cooking process, so...you're kind of making them healthier for you. (And yes, this is how we justify using it several times per week.)
You can even make grilled cheese, fish and cakes in record time. We're talking 10-15 minutes for a cake! We haven't made every dish on it yet, but the recipe book is pretty mouth watering, and we'll be posting some coffee cake videos just as soon as we can find the flour and sugar.
We know you're at least a little, if not a lot, interested at this point. So what are you waiting for? Go check the Philips Airfryer out!
Around these parts, we can't just settle for truffles. They need to be dark chocolate truffles. But are those good enough? Nope. They also need coffee. Not any kind of coffee, though. It needs to be Velton's Twilight coffee. Wow, we're picky!
The result of all this pickiness, however, are some amazingly delicious food items. So, without further ado, we present to you Twilight Dark Chocolate Truffles!
- 1 cup heavy whipping cream
- 2 tbsp butter
- 2 tbsp ground Velton's Twilight coffee
- 4 oz baker's chocolate
- 2 3/4 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- Add all ingredients to a sauce pan and heat over medium until all ingredients are melted (about 10 minutes), stirring constantly.
- When all ingredients are melted and the mixture is smooth, pour into a glass bowl and refrigerate for one hour or until it is a firm consistency.
- Remove the bowl from the refrigerator and scoop the mixture onto wax paper or into treat cups by the tablespoon. Hint: A cookie scoop is great for this!
- Serve immediately or refrigerate until ready to serve.
