  • Introducing: Rocket Espresso R58 Cinquantotto!

The Rocket Espresso R58 espresso machine is the ultimate home device for whipping up incredible espresso and milk drinks. With its dual  PID controlled boilers and stainless steel, hand built case, this machine is at the pinnacle of home performance. If you hadn’t heard yet, Rocket Espresso’s new R58 offering adds even more to this incredible package.

    What’s the Same?

The new Cinquantotto version of the R58 still has the defining features of the original R58. It still has two PID controlled boilers. These boilers ensure you’ll always have water at the perfect temp for brewing and steaming. The Cinquantotto also maintains the stainless steel case, which is brilliantly shiny and solid as a tank. You can still plumb this machine with its commercial quality rotary pump. Finally, every R58 Cinquantotto is still built by hand in Milan, Italy. With that out of the way, what are the changes?

    What’s New?

The most noticeable new feature is the Cinquantotto’s beautiful touchscreen PID controller. Bright and colorful, this screen gives you easy control over boiler temps and even includes new functionality. Thanks to the new interface, the R58 Cinquantotto can be set to turn on automatically so it’s up to temp when you’re ready to brew. It’s still detachable too, for when you don’t want a screen intruding on that classic look. The next thing you might spot is this machine’s all new shot timer. Small but functional, the mirror finish on this timer allows it to blend into the beautiful casing when not in use. That means you get accurate shot timing without compromising the appearance of the machine. Speaking of appearance, redesigned cup rails and legs give the new R58 Cinquantotto a distinctive look that goes beyond what other Italian espresso machines have to offer.

All of this means that the Rocket Espresso R58 Cinquantotto espresso machine remains one of the best home espresso machines on the market. Between its build quality, performance, and sensibilities, this machine is a fantastic option for anyone looking to elevate their espresso game into the stratosphere. • Introducing Eureka's Mignon Notte!

Eureka’s Mignon line is expanding! We’re excited to offer the Mignon Notte, Eureka’s newest espresso grinder. If you’re not familiar with the Mignon line, they’re Eureka’s compact but powerful espresso grinders that have a footprint and style perfect for any kitchen. From the Silenzio all the way up to the stunning Specialita, the Mignon line is one our favorite collections of grinders on the market.

    Mignon Engineering

The Notte is a great addition to the existing set, and offers a more affordable entry to high end espresso grinding. Part of why the Mignon line is so strong is the burr set. All of the Mignon grinders feature powerful 50mm flat steel burrs (aside from the Specialita, which features 55mm burrs). These are larger, more carefully engineered burrs than what you typically find on home espresso grinders under $1,000. Those burrs provide consistent, fluffy grounds that are perfect for espresso. Despite its ultra affordable price point, the Notte includes that very same burr set.

The Notte also features the metal case that helps set the Mignons apart. This compact, sturdy case features better construction than many similarly priced grinders. While they still use plastic hoppers and have some plastic case elements, the step up to an almost all metal case design is really worth it. On top of that, the Notte uses the same stepless grind adjust that the rest of the Mignons do. This means you get ultra specific control over your grind, allowing you to dial in the trickiest coffees for your machine.

    Affordability Trade-offs

There’s really only a couple of trade-offs the Notte makes to hit its affordability point. The first is omitting the deafening tech found in the othe Mignons. But never fear! While the silence of the Mignon line is admirable, the Notte isn’t especially loud compared to other grinders in its price range. While you may want to step up to the Silenzio if you’re especially sound conscious, the Notte is no more loud than other espresso grinders.

The only other trade-off is the manual dose control. To grind with the Notte you do have to hold your portafilter in place, but given that it grinds in relatively small amounts quite quickly, we haven’t found this to be much of a challenge. Outside of these two differences, the Notte is quite similar to the Silenzio, and for a significantly lower price.

We think the Notte makes an excellent starter espresso grinder. Find out for yourself now, only @ SCG!

  • New Product Spotlight: Jura J6

The Jura J6 offers great shots and milk frothing without the learning curve of a more complicated semi-automatic espresso machine. With that in mind, it's easy to get excited about this machine. With 12 drink options, easy setup (and cleaning), and a simple interface, the Jura J6 might be just the thing your kitchen needs!

    Setup and maintenance

Anyone familiar with superautomatic machines knows that setup and cleaning can sometimes be the price paid for ease of use. Not so with the J6. The manual is clear and easy to read, and will help you get your J6 up and running in 20-30 minutes. You will want to do some extra dialing in to make sure you get the best shots (something we covered in a video here!). Otherwise, setup is a total breeze.

Cleaning and maintaining the J6 is easy as well. Simple guides help you to replace the CLEARYL Smart Filter, clean the milk system, and descale the machine. These tasks usually don't require much more than a container of cleaning solution and pressing a button.

Great taste and easy to use

One of the reasons some folks prefer semi-automatic machines to superautos is taste. With a semi-automatic machine you have full control over the flavor of your espresso. This is less true with superautos, usually offering few settings to control the taste. Luckily, the J6 pulls great shots out of the box. Even more impressive is that these shots are achieved with a push of a button.

Even more impressive than the shots are how well the J6 nails milk texture. Superautos usually get close to chain café quality, but pale in comparison to a seasoned barista manually frothing milk. Then there's the J6. While nothing truly beats the range of texture possibilities on a manual steam wand, the J6 definitely edges out the drive through café experience. On top of that, it does it all with a button press.

    Footprint, head room

While not noticeably smaller than other superautos (it is, in fact, a little on the tall side), we had no trouble fitting the J6 on a crowded countertop. The bean hopper, water tank, and accessory storage are all easy to access as well. Furthermore, the bean hopper and water tank are quite large. This means you'll have to refill less, making maintenance on the machine even easier.

We're excited to offer the J6, if you're ready to see this great machine in action, check it out here!

  • New Product Spotlight: Eureka Drogheria

We're very excited to add the Drogheria MCD4 to a stellar lineup of Eureka grinders!

The Drogheria MCD4 is a brand new bulk grinder designed specifically for commercial settings. The grinder has a host of features that make it into a great machine to add to your cafe space.

The grind adjust dial is big and easy to use, with a label that makes finding the right setting easy, even if you're not an every day barista. The knob, like the rest of the grinder, feels sturdy too.

The hopper is a whopping 5 Lbs, allowing you to grind entire bags of beans at a time. The footprint of this machine is also easy to vouch for, fitting even tight cafe counters.

Finally, the bag clip is strong and simple, and the grinder's two position switch makes it easy to use.

    The insides

Looks and usability are great, but it's what's on the inside that really counts, and the Drogheria delivers here as well. The 75mm burrs can handle the bulk that the hopper delivers, and are capable of grinding for almost any brew method. The motor is big and reliable as well, and doesn't affect the temperature of the beans for most settings.

All of this combines with extremely durable and reliable parts. This is a meaty grinder that really delivers on dependability along with the aforementioned aesthetics and usability. If we have any caveats to offer, it's that this machine does heat up more on the settings needed for Turkish coffee. We recommended grinding under 8 oz. when using this setting. Otherwise, it's a great device.

Also worth noting, we're introducing the KRE from Eureka this week as well, which serves a very different purpose. Look forward to more info on that machine soon and check out the Drogheria here!
