Overview

For espresso lovers who want a machine that offers stability and control without breaking the bank, Breville created the Breville Infuser. It provides steady low-pressure pre-infusion that gives espresso a full flavor and aroma in every sip. The Infuser incorporates built in PID temperature control. The PID provides stable temperature for a better cup of coffee with high pressure steam and faster turn around time.

Features and Functionality

  • PID Temperature Control - Finely tuned electronic assistance for increased temperature stability.
  • Auto Purge - Automatically adjusts water temperature after steam for optimal espresso extraction temperature.
  • Traditional Steam Wand - Stainless steel 360° swivel-action steam wand for effortless milk texturing.
  • Low Pressure Pre-Infusion - Applies low water pressure at the start of the extraction to gently expand grinds for an even extraction.
  • No Mucky Puck - Removes excess water from the ground coffee in the filter basket after extraction for easy disposal of the coffee puck.
  • Large Water Tank - Water tank holds 61 oz (1.8L) and is removable with handle.
  • Built in Water Filter - Replaceable water filter reduces impurities and scale.
Pros
  • PID Temperature Control - Unlike other espresso machines in this price range, the Infuser stands out from the rest with its built-in PID temperature control that guarantees stable temperature for ideal shots
  • Low Pressure Pre-Infusion - This machine will get the most flavor and aroma out of your grinds as it gently moistens your grounds before extraction.
  • Mon Petit - This machine packs more power in it's punch even with it's small size.
Cons
  • Internal PID - The PID is not programmable, and you cannot set a specific brew temperature.
How Does it Compare?

This Breville model replaces and improves upon the Breville Die Cast BES830XL Programmable Espresso Machine. With an internal PID for optimal shot extraction, the Infuser is a great value.

I noticed when I filled up the single wall double shot basket that the grounds only weigh 12 grams. How am I supposed to get 15-18 grams in there?

Best Answer: :) yes, well ... somewhere in my instructions I read where it suggested 3 level scoops would be about the right amount. It became quickly obvious, after 2 scoops filled the single wall double shot basket that this might prove to be interesting. My solution ... I picked a clean area on the counter where I could wipe up the excess grounds and put them in container for later shots or beefing up regular coffee. After putting in two scoops, I gently tapped the portafilter on the counter to settle the grounds a bit, then carefully piled the 3rd scoop on top, and using the press, packed the portafilter until the chrome ring on the press disappeared from view. I then shook off the small amount of excess around the rim, making sure the rim was clean so it would properly seat, and voila, it worked out perfectly. The excess grounds I cleaned up and used on successive espressos. :)

A lot of bang for the buck... all of the features plus some as compared to other machines. Breville is not a traditional name in espresso so do not let that put you off. I don't know how much better of a machine you will find anywhere in the price range! Comparable... comparable machines go for at least $200 more and still don't offer all the features of the infuser. Super shots are easily obtained after getting grind dialed in. The PID is not programmable but IS adjustable up and down in 2 degree increments within several degrees of its preset. This machine was purchased to replace a Breville BES860xL, now discontinued by the BES870XL, which I considered. The problem is that while the grinder is still in excellent condition, my 860 has developed a chronic internal leak. While it may be repairable, I need my shot NOW, so it was time to replace.
Not wanting to find myself at some future time with another half of a machine, I opted for the 840 and Breville Smart Grinder Pro. I am happy with my decision; it was fairly easy to transition from one Breville grinder to another, and more fully adjustable grinder, but I have found that the 840 is actually superior to my trusty 860.
I do not agree that the two units take more counter space than did the 860. At the least, the separate units have more clearance beneath my cabinets, and that would have been a challenge had I opted for the 870. Those are the physical considerations, but how does my 840 perform?
As I have said, the transition was simple between similar machines. My first shot was decent, not great. At this writing I am five or six shots into the 840., and although I am still tweaking the grinder, the best of the shots that I have pulled from the 840 are better than the best from the 860 even after five years of experience.
In short, the BES840XL is a capable machine given that one takes the time to learn to use it correctly. It is not obtrusive on the counter either in size or appearance, and it is relatively inexpensive. As with all things espresso, the real magic is in grind and technique, and given those considerations, this machine will deliver a great shot without breaking anyone's espresso machine budget.
