Overview

The Breville Oracle Touch strikes the balance between convenience and quality with dead-simple operation and the prosumer-inspired basics to back it up. True to its name, the Touch flaunts a vibrant 4-inch touchscreen that lets you zip through controls and menus, change settings, and program and save custom drinks—all at the flick of a finger. The streamlined screen means friendlier operation for owners and guests alike, while also enabling custom drinks and labels to make your mornings easier. The Oracle Touch's impressive featureset finds its roots in traditional espresso machine designs: dedicated brew and steam boilers, PID temperature control, a heated brew group, and built-in pre-infusion (to name a few). And just like the original Oracle, the Touch sports an automatic dosing and self-tamping grinder (that now supports both single and double espresso baskets), volumetric shot programming, and best-in-class automatic milk steaming that rivals most cafes.

Features and Functionality

  • Dual Boiler - Dedicated brew and steam boilers offer fast heat times and PID-controlled temperature stability.
  • Electronically Heated Group - The group head of the Oracle also sports a dedicated heating element to keep shots hot.
  • Automatic Dose and Tamp - The Oracle Touch's brings hands-free consistency with an integrated grinder that doses and tamps automatically.
  • Auto-on - Set a start time on your machine for a piping hot shot right out of bed.
  • Oracle Steam Wand - The Oracle's steam wand monitors temperature and introduce an adjustable amount of air, creating the perfect milk foam and temperature every time.
  • 58mm Group with Solenoid - The Oracle Touch's brew head is a classic 58mm, and also has a built-in solenoid valve for backflushing.
  • Volumetric or Timed Shots - The Touch offers extra flexibility with programmable shot times set by volume, time or monitored manually.
Pros
  • Product Design - Breville excels at making daily usage feel like a premium experience. The touchscreen is bright, responsive and stands head-and-shoulders above the dodgy TFT screens of other machines. The ability to save your favorite drink recipes is a marked improvement over the original Oracle.
  • Consistent Coffee - Traditionalists tend to dislike hybrid machines like the Oracle Touch, but the repeatability possible shot-to-shot with the Oracle's built-in fan-tamper, brew temperature stability and volumetric shot programming is remarkable.
  • Magic Milk - The Oracle's steam wand, with temperature probe and auto-aeration, is still one of the slickest effort-saving features on a home machine to-date. It feels immensely luxurious to plant a perfect rosette while putting in almost no effort—you don't even have to change out of your PJs.
  • Worry-free Workflow - Almost effortless is no exaggeration. Setup is minimal and coaxing a good shot from the machine is as easy as a few grind adjustments.
Cons
  • Streamlined, Missing Features - The automation and simplified controls of the Oracle Touch come with a price. The Touch trades some of the original Oracle's functionality, namely programmable tamp pressure and pre-infusion, for a sleeker, more user-friendly interface.
  • Large Format - Like the original Oracle, the Touch is a large espresso machine, standing at almost 18 inches tall and 15 inches wide. Make sure to measure your cabinets before purchasing.
How Does it Compare? Need help divining your future? Pick the Oracle Touch if you're looking for streamlined lattes, or are sharing your new toy with someone uninterested in technical details. For tighter controls and more minute measurements, the original Oracle is just the thing to scratch that technophile's itch.

Is it easy to use for hot water too? I'm thinking to buy this unit and remove my regular coffee brew machine and kettle unit. Combine 3 units by 1
A shopper on Jul 30, 2017
Best Answer: YES! As with the Oracle, there is a hot water outlet. The Oracle (manufacturer) website has a reference to the part in the instruction manual with a diagram for reference, "K. Dedicated hot water outlet delivers hot water for Americano and pre-heating cups"

What's the height for Breville Oracle Touch including the coffee bean hopper? The dimensions says 17.75" but does not say where it is measured to.
A shopper on Aug 1, 2017
Best Answer: From counter to highest point on bean hopper, 17.75". From cup warmer to highest point on bean hopper, 3.25".

Can you make a Caffe Crema or Caffe Lungo with the Oracle Touch?
Dank575 on Sep 10, 2017
Best Answer: The maximum extraction time is 60 seconds. So a Caffe Lungo could be programmed depending on grind and bean. The grind for a Caffe Crema could be programmed, but the tamp pressure is pre-set to 30 lbs and cannot be adjusted if a lighter tamp is necessary.

Is one able to steam/froth milk on one's own without any automatic function? That is, can I do it the old-fashioned way?
Patrick G on Aug 6, 2017
Best Answer: Yep! You can set the steam wand to manual only mode, though it's a little difficult since the steam wand is rather thick and is not on an articulated joint.

Sounds like there is pre infusion it is just not adjustable is that correct?
A shopper on Jul 22, 2017
Best Answer: Correct! The Oracle Touch has a short ~6 second pre-infusion from the factory.

Aside from the touchscreen, are there any changes to the inner workings of the Oracle Touch vs Oracle? You mentioned the tamp pressure and pre-infusion as non-configurable due to the new interface, but overall looks like an Oracle with a new front plate.
A shopper on Jul 18, 2017
Best Answer: There are a couple of cool changes between the two:

The new Oracle Touch can now do single shots! the original Oracle had trouble tamping into tapered single baskets.

Custom drink programming saves your recipes—including specific shot time, hot water (if any), milk temperature and texture—for each drink you set up. Much better than reprogramming for each drink. (Though this is really only important if you have guests or the machine sees multiple users.)

It's also a little over an inch narrower, since the steam wand control is no longer on the side of the machine.

And lots of little stuff: the finish now has polished accents instead of brushed, there's a smooth anti-fingerprint coating, there are even adjustable work lights that shine down into your cup.

The "gap" that this espresso machine fills between semi-automatic and superautomatic was just up my ally. And there's not too many limits on making it more manual in the future as I hone my "quasi-home barista skills" and palate. I love seeing that warm honey in the shot glass every morning with minimal time and cleanup on my part...and not having to pull out the scale in the dark kitchen at 6am.

That being said, I'm loving what this machine is putting out. I love the scheduled auto-starts I can set up and customize for different days of the week so I know it's always warmed up and ready for me when I wake up each morning (and I can adjust the auto-off timing so it will turn off if at the right time and won't waste power). The flavor, dosing strength, and crema has been really good once I dialed in my settings. My "daily driver" convenient weekday coffee shop isn't known for top class drinks (but is more than passable), and this is typically making better espresso than I get there. Not saying it's as good as my favorite weekend spots or the best baristas in town, but I'm definitely equaling and exceeding my convenient weekday coffee shop, and therefore partly paying for this thing now that I don't go there anymore which is a nice bonus. I think it's a little bit ridiculous to proposition this thing as mostly a cost-benefit calculation for how long it will take to break even by not going to coffee shops. Who wants to quit going to coffee shops and getting the best possible espresso from an expert? Not me. I still want to do that occasionally, but this machine helps me get really good results to where I really am excited about what I make at home. It's mostly a luxury for a non-barista to make espresso at home, with a side benefit of reducing coffee shop credit card swipes (plus tip), and that's how I'm reviewing this thing.

I've loved the upgrade in cleanliness to my kitchen this machine has afforded me. Before with a (low tier) semi-automatic machine and separate grinder, it was super messy. This machine is a beauty, stays clean, has convenient water filling access in the top front, self purges the steam wand, and grinds and tamps very consistently.

I haven't done it yet, but I did read in the manual that you can manually steam milk, so that's one more manual feature I can take over whenever I want to (and something people online seem to be worried about). I'm still testing to see if I can control the dose for single vs. double shots (some people online saying you can't adjust and some saying you can). So in terms of things I will never be able to control manually, that list got smaller and smaller the more I looked into it, and the things that are left on that list are things I don't personally care about too much because I'm not a real barista and I don't want to *have* to care about them. I've also been testing temperatures with my thermapen probe thermometer and so far the temps I'm seeing are good to go.

Of course, I paid for all of this at a higher cost than I'm ecstatic about (just satisfied, I guess) and thus my 4 stars for price and value. I'll update this review if quality ever becomes a question. It's impossible to conclusively know right now. Of course the quality feels good, but given this is a Touch and I can't see or know about internal quality, I'm going to let this thing prove itself over time, but that does no one any good if I waited 2 years to post a review. I have a Breville Barista Express that I use at home, and I bought the Oracle Touch to bring to the office so that my co-workers could enjoy espresso versus what is available next door at the Starbucks within a food store chain.

This is a first class product, with first class support. For example, after unboxing, I noticed that all the adhesive tape holding movable parts had one end folded under so that you could easily remove the tape. This is the only product I've ever purchased from anyone that included that minute attention to detail...just a preview of things to come. There were cautionary stickers in all the proper places, the quick start guide is excellent, and the first time use touch screen tutorial demonstrates most major functions as you make your first latte.

I'm still tweaking personal settings, but the default settings are good right out of the box. The best, and most amazing part, is that the milk froths as if it were done by a barista that has been in the business for years. Well done, Breville!

Highly recommended. (Posted on 11/26/2017)

Bought this 4 days ago on Amazon Prime. Could not sleep well until it arrived 2 days later. I have become more of a coffee snob in the past 5 years. Having owned several super automatics. This machine is sublime. Wish I could make Trump one of these every morning, and he would forget about tweeting till noon. The temperture of coffee and milk/froth is second to none. Get a loan or tap out HELOC to purchase one of these. You will spring out of bed to use this machine. (Posted on 11/3/2017)

I purchased this machine based on a need to be able to produce quality espresso shots and coffee drinks without having to train everyone in my family to be a barista. This machine gives you 95% of the control of a quality grinder and dual boiler machine without the hassles and cleanup. The machine looks good on a counter and takes up very little space when you consider it's a full size grinder and dual boiler machine in one.

The grinder is stepped and gives you 45 adjustments to get the right grind for your bean. It consistently weighted out 22g of coffee. When setting it up start at the factory setting of 30 and work up. If there is a con to the grinder is that you cannot automatically adjust the grams of coffee and cannot adjust the tamp pressure.

The extraction is automatic and straight forward. Program the temperature and duration of extraction and the machine does the rest. If there is a con to the extraction it's that you cannot adjust the pre-infusion time. It is set at 6 seconds.

The best part of this dual boiler unit is the milk texturing. It is adjustable for both temperature and foam. It is as simple and pouring milk into the supplied stainless steal container, inserting the wand and pushing the button. The machine produces perfectly textured milk every time. This is allows anyone to produce quality coffee drinks with no training.

Clean up is a quick and easy. I would recommend the machine to anyone who whats the control of their coffee flavor and doesn't mind not being able to play with the minutiae of the process.

PROS:
pulls a great shot
easy to texture milk
large water container that can be topped off from the top of the machine
easy cleanup
machine comes with everything you need to make espresso
machine programing is easy and straight forward
anyone can make good espresso or coffee drinks with little or no training

CONS:
instruction manual is lacking but machine is self explanatory
cannot easily adjust gram of grind
cannot adjust tamp pressure
cannot adjust pre-infusion (Posted on 9/24/2017)

I don't usually write reviews but am very happy with this product. I previously had a 2 Super automatics that I though were good. This machine blows them away. The coffee strength is great (I like a strong cup) and I especially love all the auto settings for the milk. I have a soy latte every morning and this has not let me down. Using good fresh beans also makes a huge difference. It is a little pricey, but very easy to use and I have not been disappointed. It is great to steam the milk while the coffee is extracting too. If your thinking about this I highly recommend it. (Posted on 9/11/2017)

I can't rate the BES990BSS Because I have not used it, however I do own the Breville Oracle. BES980XL, which is a great machine. This is a major step up from the one I own.
First and foremost you are buying a Breville. It is one of the best companies I have ever dealt with. They stand behind their products. Customer service does not get any better. Buy this machine, you won't regret it. (Posted on 9/3/2017)
