I have a Breville BES 830XL. Is this tamper the right size for my portafilter? I am not sure if 58mm is the inside or outside measurement on portafilters
James S on Feb 4, 2015
Best Answer: Unfortunately, the BES830XL does not have a 58mm portafilter. I believe that it's either a 53 or 54mm that you will need, but if you measure the inside diameter of the filter basket, that will be the size that you need.

Convex?
A shopper on Jan 8, 2015
Best Answer: We don't carry this tamper or the other Rattleware tampers with a convex base, only in flat. If you're looking for a convex base, I wou suggest looking at the Reg Barber tampers. Although they will be a bit more expensive, you have a wide array of handle shapes and colors to choose from!

Does this tamper fit a Seaco Aroma portafilter?
A shopper on Nov 15, 2013
Best Answer: No, this tamper is 58mm, and the Aroma requires a 53mm tamper. You can find it at the link below, but keep in mind if you are using the standard Aroma pressurized portafilter that came with the machine you do not need to tamp, as you can create too much pressure and there may not be any flow from the portafilter. If you are using a non pressurized portafilter and require a 53mm tamper, select one in the drop down menu of the tamper link below:

I say it could be cheaper because I would like to pay less. But, that said, I am 100% happy with it. I have been using a cheap and lighter tamper for years which was 55mm, which means that I had to do a lot of extra work to get the result I wanted. This is perfect. It fits my Silvia filter perfectly, and feels good in the hand (Posted on 7/24/2014)

This was my first tamper, and I bought it to pair with my Gaggia Classic. It feels nice and heavy, and makes a nice fit on my 58mm portafilter basket. I'd say my espresso shots are greatly improved since using this. I was concerned the plastic handle would be if low quality, but it's actually very nice. (Posted on 5/23/2014)

Very heavy weight and nice feel. Much better than pretty much any tamper I have used in my 6+years working in high quality coffee shops. I love it. I got it as part of the Rancilio Silvia and Rocky Grinder Package. (Posted on 10/12/2013)

I had been using a tamper that was too small for my coffee basket and was always having to tamp it here, tamp it there, just to get all the coffee ready to give me that perfect shot.
Gail told me I needed the 53mm tamper, and recommended this brand. Was she right! Every morning I am eager to use the proper gear for the proper shot. Seattle Coffee Gear knows their stuff! Thanks again......

Rattleware Stainless Steel TamperReview by Jim

These are well priced and well made. The down side is that the edge wears over 2 to 3 years of daily use. This is unavoidable as it makes contact with the porta filter basket during tamping. At some point in time this makes it start to hold coffee grounds and it does not do the job required. This could only be avoided by slightly undersizing it but then that would not allow it to tamp properly. Nothing lasts forever and I make 4 doubles a day so overall it is a great value in my opinion.

Pros:
Easy To Use, Commercial Grade, Easy To Clean

Cons:
The edges wear with time (Posted on 4/3/2012)

This is only the 3rd one I have used with regularity. My first one was a custom built medium weight one, and my 2nd one was a light weight one for home use. This one has nice weight. It was free with purchase. I see no need yet to upgrade until I get a better sense of the subtleties

Pros:
Balanced decent weight

Great Tamper at a Great PriceReview by Home Barista Wantabe

Like most people, I decided to ditch the cheap plastic tamper that came with my Espresso Machine. I contacted SCG and asked them about some of the tampers that would work well for my given machine. They told me that this tamper was a good fit for my machine and desired price range.

Rattleware makes very good products and they are all reasonably priced. This is a very nice tamper at a great price. You can pay more if you want to, but I don't think you are going to find a better tamper at any price range.

Easy To Use, Easy To Clean, Commercial Grade

I used a plastic tamper which came with my old Gaggia. Now I know why all the commercial establishements use a metal tamper. You get more control and the pressure is equal on the tamp. A metal tamper is the only way to go. This one works just fine.
