Product Description

Retro and intriguing, the Francis Francis X1 provides all the essentials to brew an enticing shot of espresso and delectable milk based drink (latte or cappuccino, anyone?). Featuring a centrally located temperature gauge with steam and coffee icons to let you know when the X1 is at optimal temperature to brew and steam. Simple coffee and steam switches sit adjacent to one another for transitional ease.

Features & Functionality of the Francis Francis X1 Espresso Machine

  • Cup Warmer: Warm your espresso cups on top of the X1 prior to brewing.
  • Simple Switches: No confusion here! The X1 offers three easy switches (on/off, brew, steam) for fewer head-scratching moments.
  • Steam Knob: Turn the prominent steam knob counter-clockwise to control steam power.
  • Notification Sound: When alternating between brewing and steaming, the X1 will let you know when it's ready with a friendly beep.
  • Hot Water Option: The X1 may not have a hot water switch, but Francis Francis still included a way to dispense hot water: Flip both the coffee and steam switches in the up position. Once the ready light is on, turn the steam knob counter-clockwise and flip the coffee switch down. Hot water will then dispense through the steam wand.
  • Made for Grounds: Since this version of the X1 is specifically made for ground coffee and not pods or capsules, you have the versatility of choosing what blend you want to brew.
  • Additional Storage: The X1 comes with a bonus drawer at the base of the machine.
  • No Programmability: The X1 is an elegant and simple machine that offers the basics to make a great drink. However, there are no programming options available with this machine.

(1) Does this machine pull a good shot with adequate crema?
(2) What about this model renders it incompatible with pods?
(3) Any insider tips?
A shopper on Aug 17, 2014
Best Answer: I set my Gaggia MDF to grind my espresso from 2-4. I can usually tell if I have the grind right by looking at the grind and feeling it.

My pull is around 24 seconds for a double basket. I run an empty pull before each shot to ensure the group head and basket is flushed and heated.

If you need to run your shot hotter you can flip the steam switch on for a few seconds and then back off. Usually the green ready brew light is a good indicator and the brew is plenty hot for a good extraction.

I have not tried a gran crema blend but most of my shots pull a healthy 1/4 to 1/2 inch depending on how well I do with keeping fresh beans around and tamping correctly. A calibrated ESpro 57mm tamper helps significantly with that.

So far I have only had one espresso blend that has come out tasting great from a local roaster. The amount of crema is really dependent on the freshness and roast quality of the beans for the most part. The machine will deliver if your beans are up to the task!

How does this X1 compare the the X7?
A shopper on Aug 17, 2014
Best Answer: X1:
all aluminum design
18-Bar pump
Front control panel uses switches
Size: 12''x10''x9.5'' (HxWxD)
More Retro Look

Plastic design
15-Bar pump
Front control panel uses Buttons.
Size: 13''x10''x12'' (HxWxD)
More Modern look

There are a few minor differences between the 2 models, but they do just about the same job, Just do not forget to buy a quality grinder because they both utilize a Non-Pressurized portafilter. If you are on a budget, I sugjust getting a Hario Mini Mill. Although you will have to manually grind your beans, you will get consistancy every time. I use it at home and it is perfect.

What size tamper will I need?
A shopper on Jan 7, 2016
Best Answer: The tamper comes with the machine. It is an odd size and plastic. It does work just fine but I am not sure of the size. The metal one I use with a previous machine does not work with this machine.
By the way, I love this machine. It is beautiful in it's simplicity. Iy makes the most beautiful steamed milk. Enjoy!

what does refurbished mean exactly ?
A shopper on Feb 3, 2016
Best Answer: What is a Refurbished machine? Here's the breakdown:

Generally, it's equipment that was used as a demo model in our retail store or was returned to us or the manufacturer. These machines could have had a fair amount of use.
Our in-house refurbishing team takes the machines apart, rebuilds and replaces parts as needed, repairs, tests and then thoroughly cleanses the equipment.
Refurbished gear will most likely not include the original manufacturer packaging and may not include any non-essential manufacturer-provided accessories. Consumable items included with new equipment (such as water filters or hardness testing strips) will not be included.
Because this equipment is used, there may be aesthetic or cosmetic blemishes that cannot be repaired during refurbishment.

what year of is production is the machine and what has been refurbished?
Ralf O on Oct 6, 2015
Best Answer: Unfortunately, we don't have a specific date of manufacture for these machines. We get them directly from Illy, after they have been returned to the manufacturer from a store, typically within a store's 30-60 day return policy. We don't, however, know how long they might have been in that store's warehouse, or how long they might have been sitting in Illy's warehouse before they were able to send them to us.

These machines go through our refurbish department and are thoroughly tested before we clean and box them to sell, so we make sure that everything is operating properly. They may have some minor blemishes or scratches, because they likely were previously owned for a short time. Hope this helps to answer your question!

Hi, I was wondering if the paranello tip can be easily removed and replaced, or if the whole arm can be replaced by an x7 or similar steam arm?. Thanks in advance.
A shopper on Aug 5, 2014
Best Answer: Yes, the metal paranello tip screws off. I've heard the traditional wand from an x7 will fit, but I havent been able to locate one yet. Illy doesn't sell the arm, just the tip.

If I have a Portafilter that uses Pods, can it be used with this machine? I already had a Francis X1 espresso machine. Also, what year is this machine? Thank you!
Sandy M on Jun 6, 2014
Best Answer: Unfortunately the Francis Francis X1 machines for pods or grounds use not just a different portafilter, but a different brew head as well, and so you will not be able to use a pod portafilter on a non pod machine. We purchase and refurbish a variety of models of these machines from different years, and so there is not a specific date that your machine will be manufactured from.

What size of tamper should I use for francis portafilter? Also, could you recommend me a grinder for this francis ?because this is my first espresso machine.
A shopper on May 25, 2014
Best Answer: The Francis Francis X1 machine uses a 57mm tamper, and though it comes with a plastic one to get you started, I would recommend moving up to the Rattleware 57mm. You will need a good quality grinder for best results with this non pressurized unit, and so at minimum I would check out the Baratza Virtuoso or Baratza Preciso. I have included a few links below for you to check out!

Hi, we have a Saeco Aroma Espresso Machine and were wondering if the Francis is as good or better? Not taking in account for looks which Francis wins. But will it brew/pull a finer espresso ?

Lynn R on May 20, 2014
Best Answer: The Francis Francis X1 machine is a non pressurized system, and so it will produce great shots that may be superior to the Aroma, but only if you have a good quality grinder. Without a great grinder, though, the pressurized system of the Aroma would be a better bet! Hope this helps clarify!

Great machine at a great priceReview by Mike
Beautiful machine that makes very good coffee and couldn't be easier to use! I wouldn't hesitate to buy another refurbished machine from SCG, after the slight inconvenience of wrong accessories in the package, SCG rushed the correct ones to me. Great customer service! (Posted on 9/22/2014)
