In our book, all coffee is created equally delicious (when made properly!). That’s why we’re not surprised when some find it difficult to choose between espresso, drip coffee, pour over, Moka or a press style when crafting the perfect cup. Luckily, Krups found some middle ground with the Moka Brew coffee maker. Brewing a hybrid between a Moka Pot and drip coffee, the Moka Brewer utilizes steam pressure to thoroughly saturate the coffee grounds for a full robust flavor.

Features & Functionality of the Krups Moka Brewer Coffee Maker

  • Raining Coffee!: The Moka Brewer features a shower head like brew head that rains glorious coffee during the brew process.
  • Steam Pressure: This coffee maker utilizes steam pressure to guide the water from the bottom reservoir to above the carafe (where the grinds reside) and continues to use steam pressure while brewing.
  • Auto Off: Automatically turns off 20 minutes after the brew process begins.
  • Permanent Filter: Show your love for planet Earth with this eco-friendly permanent filter. No paper filters needed!
  • Cord Storage: Keep your counter tidy with the wraparound cord storage located underneath the base of the brewer.
  • Simplistic - The Moka Brewer features one on/off switch for worry free brewing.
  • Retro Design - This coffee maker is an updated version of a previous Moka Brew model. Luckily, Krups kept the distinct design for true fans to recognize and adore once again.
  • Permanent Auto-Off - You are unable to disable the auto-off function that automatically occurs 20 minutes from the beginning of the brew cycle.
How Does it Compare?

The carafe locking mechanism can be a little tricky at first, but simple once you get the hang of it! To unlock the brewer and gain access to the carafe push the safety button while simultaneously lifting the locking lever, all located on the top bar of the brewer.

Tips and Tricks

Filling the entire grounds container is recommended for the best overall flavor. Do not tamp like espresso, but loosely fill just below the edge.

How many grams of ground coffee does the basket hold? Is it best to fill the basket to capacity, just like a moka pot? Wouldn't that mean that you can't make smaller amounts of coffee? How many ounces of finished coffee does this produce? Thank you very much!
A shopper on Apr 28, 2014
Best Answer: When we did testing, we found for best results you will need to use the full capacity of water and coffee for brewing in this Krups Moka Brewer Coffee Maker. Krups also recommends using full capacity of this brewer as well, and results for partial pots were not very strong. We liked the flavor from about 60 grams of coffee and the full 40 ounces of water. Hope this helps!

Does anyone have a recommendation on what type of grind is best for the Moka Brewer (i.e., drip, finer than drip, french press, etc.)?
David G on Oct 7, 2014
Best Answer: I find the finer I grind the better I like the results. This is my first time using this kind of process. I have always used drip grind in the past and really like my Krups.

The plastic tubes that lead up to the top of the pot.. are the interior of the tubes stainless? Also is the plastic on this machine BPA free?
ianthia f on Apr 20, 2015
Best Answer: No, the interior is not stainless. Krups does not specify whether or not they are BPA free so we cannot verify this information. We know that Bonavita, Technivorm, and Breville certify their machines as BPA free if you want to look into those brands.

What is the cleanup like on this? Since it doesn't have a paper filter, is it comparable to the cleanup on a Bialetti moka pot?
Juan R on Jun 3, 2014
Best Answer: Yes, the cleanup is fairly similar on this Krups Moka Brewer to a Bialetti Moka pot. The permanent filter on this unit will need emptied of grounds and rinsed, and the glass pot cleaned and air dried.

It is difficult to discover the capacity of this brewer. Some declare that it is 56 oz. Another reviewer stated that it is 46 oz. Still another one says that it is 40 oz. Another site that sells the KRUPS KM468850 declares it to be 1 liter, which is 33.8 oz. If the latter is right, the brewer produces less than 6 American cups of coffee. That is way too small for our household. Does anyone have the proper answer to the ounce capacity of this brewer?
cimafish on May 14, 2016
Best Answer: The KM468850 has a 36 fluid oz container, which is marked as 12 small cups and 6 large cups. You can probably overfill the container to about 40 oz. but I would not recommend doing so.

This is an excellent moka brewer and I highly recommend it. Because it is a moka brewer, it uses steam rather than hot water to brew, which produces a stronger/richer flavor of coffee, in our experience. We've owned it for about 18 months. It will only brew enough coffee for say 4 largish servings at a time. Brew time is typically 9 to 10 minutes. DHG

Andrea R on May 10, 2016
Best Answer: My KM468850 model is made in China. It was manufactured in 2014. I have owned it for about 18 months and am very satisfied with it. Good quality device. No problems to date. DHG

Hi, I live in seattle and when i visit my non coffee drinking daughter and her husband, they have this Krups maker for me to use. There are no instructions etc... I came to my own conclusions that I like to use a really fine ground of coffee, I have been cutting a flat Melita filter to fit, is there a particular filter for this coffe maker? I like the quality of the coffee, I just need to buy a warming carafe sometime, as the coffee cools quickly.
Thanks, Leslie Claesson
Leslie C on Jul 29, 2015
Best Answer: This machine includes a permanent filter so there isn't a particular filter that is meant for this machine. However, Melitta does make Disc filters. We unfortunately don't carry them, but a quick google search for Melitta Disc filters will help you out I'm sure.

After the warmer shuts off in 20 minutes, can it just be turned back on? Is the coffee going to be regular coffee or is this espresso were making? I have a stove top moka pot and that is strictly for espresso
Lisa S on May 17, 2015
Best Answer: You can turn it back on after the 20 minute shut off if you choose to do so. This is a drip coffee brewer, so it makes drip coffee, not espresso.

Fantastic BrewerReview by Paul
Although I can't speak to the more recent iterations of this coffee maker, I've had my Moka Brewer for over 10 years, with zero issues or problems. It takes a little getting used to, and you will always tweak/refine to your taste, but it consistently makes a damn fine cup in a reasonable amount of time. Although the price may be a bit prohibitive for some, it's a worthwhile investment for yourself. Plus, it has a nice, elegant, and modern design for your counter without taking up too much space. The best but also a little finikyReview by Dave
After countless auto drips and French press, this brewer blows them all away. Amazingly efficient, fast and tasty. Counter top footprint is also very small.

This maker is at its best when used with a full filter basket of grounds. Also, this brewer does not have a warming/heating plate so you need to transfer the brewed coffee to an insulated carafe. This is also a good practice because the brewed coffee comes out *stratified*, with the weaker coffee on top and the stronger coffee at the bottom and pouring into a carafe effectively mixes up those layers.

Finally,I find that the ideal grind is quite fine--coarser than a true espresso grind but not by much. In fact, the grind I use falls into the "espresso" range of settings on my Breville Smart Grinder.

So while the Moka Brewer can consistently produce superior coffee, I'd call it an "intermediate" maker as the user will have to be able to exercise some common sense while dialing it in. (Posted on 1/6/2015)
Doesn't perform wellReview by Tim
I use a dark roast and no matter how much coffee I scoop into this model the end result ends up tasting weak. Also, the On/Off switch turns off minutes after the brew cycle, causing the freshly brewed coffee to lose its heat. (Posted on 10/11/2014)
Excellent BrewReview by Jo
I had the older model 10 to 15 years ago. I was looking for a replacement, just in case my older model was at the end of its lifecycle.
Ordered the New Model and it brews a full pot of coffee just as tasty as the older model. Highly recommend the Krups Moka Brewer.
By the way- I still have my older model for backup. Who might still keep brewing for another 15 years.
