Because of all the variables in coffee and espresso production, true consistency can be a lofty goal. As a leading manufacturer of commercial espresso machines, La Marzocco knows this better than anyone, as it recognizes that trying to minimize variance makes for happier coffee drinkers. This is the reason behind the La Marzocco Strada Portafilter Basket. Using laser precision, the Strada Portafilter Basket eliminates inconsistency in hole size as well as positioning.
The double basket (17g) will fit most 58mm portafilters, the triple basket (20g) will most likely require a bottomless portafilter, but please check manufacturer specifications on your machine to be sure.
How the La Marzocco Strada Portafilter Basket - 58mm Works
Fill it up just like you would a standard portafilter:
Lightly fill the portafilter basket to the top.
Use your finger to gently even out the grounds.
Lightly press the tamper into the grounds and find a good center point.
Evenly apply approximately 30 lbs. of pressure to the grounds.
As an additional FYI, the double Strada fits the standard and bottomless Silvia portafilters, but a triple Strada may not fit all bottomless Silvia portafilters. A customer recently purchased a triple to use with his Silvia bottomless portafilter, but the bottomless was purchased from another vendor, and this basket was not compatible. In our tests, we found the current Silvia V3 Bottomless portafilter we offer to be the only bottomless that we can test to ensure an accurate fit for the triple Strada baskets.
Best Answer:I agree with the above. I'm using similar VST baskets (made or prototyped by La Marzocco, I believe) in a Breville naked portafilter. I initially fit the basket with the original spring in place and had a very difficult time removing the basket. Rather than reshape the spring, I attempted to purchase a new spring with which to experiment, but was told they are not available for the Breville portafilter separately. Before I was able to find some wire or another spring, I've been using the Basket - portafilter combo without the spring. I just need to hold the far end of the basket against the inverted portafilter as I rap the near edge against the knock box. Good Luck.
I have found that by removing and reshaping the spring (easily done by hand) you can make almost any 58mm basket fit the Breville bottomless portafilter, while still using the spring. The flat sections of the spring need to be somewhat rounded, and the curved sections made somewhat less curved. By doing this, the spring then becomes much less aggressive but still sufficiently holds the basket in place. This works for VST and most other third party baskets.
While the triple basket from La Marzocco does fit in the Breville Bottomless, it will only fit if the spring is removed. This means, however, there will be no tension holding the basket in place when you remove it from the brew head so it may stick, and knocking out the puck can be tricky, as you may loose that basket in the trash or your knockbox. If you give it a try, let us know how you like it!
Best Answer:Yes it's fine. However, it will not make your Rocket as cool as the La Marzocco GS III. Hi also paired it with E61 Precision Group Shower Screen by IMS. Search the web to find it. (E61 200 IM) in the end it's all about subtle improvement.
Thank you for the tip about the Shower Screen. I will get that one as well. I'm sure these changes won't make my machine as good as the GS III, but till I can afford one, I'm trying to get the best out of the R58 I have :-)
I have a linea mini and I'm looking at getting a bottomless portafilter. Is this somehow different than the stock baskets that were included with the linea? Just wondering if this would be like rebuying the OEM or a possible upgrade. Also how many grams does the triple hold? I think the linea has 14 17 and 21... is the triple larger than 21 grams?
A shopper on May 10, 2016
Best Answer:My La Marzocco "Strada" triple-shot basket is clearly marked 21g capacity...but MAYBE you could fit 22g into it, I don't know. The triple basket I use daily, however, is a VST and it's marked 22g. So if you want a "maximum capacity" triple I'd get a VST as it seems to have that little extra bit of "headroom" over the Strada.
Of course, I use a bottomess/naked portafilter (PF) with any triple basket as most PFs with a bottom to them won't accept a triple basket.
21 grams is the triple. If you get a La Marzocco bottomless porta filter it should fit the filters that came with the linea since it's based on the same design as the strada baskets, however, you might as well go ahead and splurge for the strada baskets as they are slightly a better filter basket then the stock ones that came with the linea mini in terms of polished finish as well as being a little more finely tuned in my opinion.
It is different, a definite upgrade, and worth buying. You'll notice the material is better, heavier and the holes are in perfect size and distance (thru nanotechnology). Triple is 21 grams but some people like to add even more grams as it could hold probably an extra 3 grams.
Can you put 18 g of coffee into the 17 g basket with no overflow, issues, or problems?

Best Answer:I've been doing quite a bit of experimenting over the last couple years with different equipment and parts. I'm using both 58mm stock Breville and laser-cut VST baskets in a dual boiler, PID controlled Breville. I know this is not exactly what you're using, but it's similar enough. I think you can find enough variation in coffee mass/volume among different brands/roasts and in final volume of coffee in the tamped basket, depending upon your tamping technique, that the difference in a 17gm or 18gm dose should not be a problem. Give it a try. The only potential problems would be difficulty installing the portafilter if the coffee is touching the upper screen, or some increased back pressure and maybe some leakage when pulling a shot. The downside is most likely a bad shot and a little mess. Good luck.
Best Answer:Yes, it is the same basket, but you would want to be sure to get the double filter basket if you're using the portafilter with spouts. If you're using the bottomless portafilter, you could get either one. Unfortunately, the spring comes with portafilters, not with the baskets, so that you get the right size for your portafilter. We do carry a replacement portafilter spring for the Rancilio Silvia though, in case you need it: https://www.seattlecoffeegear.com/rancilio-silvia-portafilter-spring
Will the double basket (17 g) fit the Breville naked portafilter for use with a Breville 920xl espresso machine (double boiler)? Think about buying both: naked portafilter and the VST basket.
A shopper on Jan 8, 2015
Best Answer:Yes, they will both fit the Breville BES920XL, and would be a good option if you're looking to replace your Breville double filter basket, and would like to pull your shots into a steady stream for a single cup!
Best Answer:We don't have a Vibiemme portafilter to test the basket with, unfortunately however it should fit most 58mm portafilters. You may want to check with the manufacturers specifications just to be sure.
Hello. Will this portafilter fit my Rocket Cellini Evoluzione V2? Also, considering that it has a breakaway spout, would it be practical to use this without the spout to pour into a single espresso cup? Finally, which La Strada baskets will this accomodate? Thank you in advance.
La Marzocco Stainless Steel Portafilter with Breakaway Spout
Best Answer:Hi Roger, If this is indeed the portafilter and basket I bought from Seattle Coffee Gear, as they have informed me is the case and asked if I could be helpful with your question, they do indeed fit. On the question of what other baskets it would accommodate, I recall checking the specs of the portafilter and getting some info there about basket compatibility. Finally, I've kept the spouts on, out of habit, I guess, and if you have a wide enough cup there's no problem, which is what I have. Hope this helps. Best., Alan
You'll LOVE this Strada Basket - I Did!Review by Rick
What took me so long to buy this basket? I have no idea!
However, I'm glad I finally did and the hype is all true. However, I must admit, I was concerned at first with the laser placed holes and all....but no worries. From the very first time I use it, I notice the improved coffee flow and true enough, it's a vast improvement over my older basket. So what are you waiting for! (Posted on 3/14/2016)
17 gram Strada Basket fits rancilio portafilterReview by Bucs Anthem
Correction for: "RLB coffee lover"
You stated in your last review that you need a naked portafilter for the 17gram......that is incorrect
The Strada 17 gram basket which is considered as a "Double Basket" fits my rancilio 58mm (normal) portafilter just fine.
Now if you get the 21 gram Strada basket which is considered a "Triple Basket".....then you need a naked portafilter.

Very nice and no-regretReview by Jamaes
This product is everything it says. Simply perfection, not a run of the mill stamped out piece of metal. If you are getting what you want from your current basket, then buying this will likely not net you enough improvement to feel the value. If your tamper is not fitting well, or you have a cheaper basket with sloppy pressed holes, then this is your solution and you will be tickled with the high quality.
If you have multiple baskets in your environment, then these will likely be a huge win, as it will quickly create consistency across multiple machines or multiple baskets.

Improved my shots noticeablyReview by Dr
If you're sitting on the fence about whether to purchase this basket, don't: this might be one of the best purchases I've made on top of my machine and grinder. The first shot I pulled with this basket in my Rancilio Silvia portafilter was smoother, richer, more robust. (Posted on 7/22/2013)
Wow what a difference!Review by J Jones
I went from using a cheaper triple basket with random results to this triple with perfect results every time.

Deep basket makes a differenceReview by RLB coffee lover
This is the highest quality filter basket I have seen. It comes along with data which confirms proper & consistent hole size of YOUR actual filter. I also love the deeper basket. It has a 17g capacity and its much easier to get a higher dose of coffee tamped just right without having to struggle to get it in the group head. I use it with my Rancilio and a Rancilio bottomless portafilter and it worked like a dream. I should caution it does require a bottomless or naked portafilter for my set up, but if you are considering this product you probably already have one. All and all I would strongly recommend this to the home enthusiast.
