La Pavoni Europiccola Manual Espresso Machine is a museum quality object d'art that belies what it really is, a countertop workhorse that can produce up to 8 life changing espresso shots in a row. It's a classically cool espresso machine with time-tested features and a retro press design that gives you the ultimate control over every aspect of your shot. Finicky like an opera diva and with almost more chrome than a Vespa scooter, bring a beautiful little taste of Italy to your corner of the world.

Features & Functionality of the La Pavoni Europiccola

  • 20 ounce Boiler: With the 20 ounce boiler capacity, this espresso machine can make 8 two ounce shots of espresso.
  • Steam and Piston: Shot extraction and milk steaming are powered by steam pressure and pistons.
  • Internal Thermostat: La Pavoni's internal thermostat will continuously monitor the pressure to ensure proper extraction.
  • Stainless Steel Heating Elements: Stainless steel elements are very durable and last a long time.
  • Nickel-Plated Brass Boiler: This sold brass boiler plated with nickel maintains an even temperature, which is essential to a quality extraction.
  • Superior Shot Quality - You have the ultimate control over every aspect of your shot.
  • Iconic Design - The Europiccola is as beautiful in form as it is fabulous in function. It's reminiscent of an antique you might find from the 1920s.
  • Heats Quickly - You'll be ready to pull a shot and steam your milk in about five minutes.
  • Learning Curve - Because this machine is manual, it does take some time to learn the specific grind of the coffee, tamp pressure and pulling technique required to produce an amazing shot. Some users thought it was too difficult to use, while others felt it only took a few tries to master it.
  • Body Temperature - It heats quickly, therefore the entire structure is hot, so be careful when handling.
  • Steaming Temperature - Some people have reported a lower steaming temperature than they prefer, so begin the steaming process with warmed milk (though this will not allow you to produce microfoam very effectively).
How Does it Compare?

The La Pavoni Europiccola makes excellent shots and Americanos.

I have a La Pavoni Europiccola espresso machine, Millenium Series, black base, bought in late 2000 or early 2001, I think. It works perfectly except that I've had to replace a few gaskets. I was looking for a small grinder for only a few cups that's easy to clean and maintain when I read that the machine is ESE compatible. Can I use the new ESE Illy pods with my machine or do I need to buy a new portafilter? Thanks.

Best Answer: Unfortunately, I don't think you'll be able to get very good shots if you try to use ESE pods. The portafilter is intended to be filled with grounds, and you have to be very careful to dial in your grinder specifically to right grind setting so that your shots are pulling within your ideal 20-30 seconds. With a manual machine like this, using ESE pods won't be the right consistency, and won't provide enough resistance, so the water will come through way too quickly, producing weak, sour shots. I've also heard of ESE pods floating initially when they encounter water, so inside your portafilter, that would allow the water to just run all around the pod and immediately out the spouts, not ever brewing through the grounds.

To my knowledge, there aren't any portafilters that you could use with this machine for pods, as it would need to be pressurized, and they don't make them this size (I don't think), but you also don't have a pump involved to produce a specific amount of constant pressure, just your arms pulling the lever down, which will be inconsistent naturally. Also, just of note, these machines are VERY finicky on the grind setting, so using a lower end grinder will not produce very good results, nowhere near what you can accomplish using a nice, high end burr grinder that will provide you with a consistent grind and enough settings to choose from so that you can pull your shots with the right timing. Sorry that I don't have better news for you!

This machine is only for the purest coffee snobReview by Tequila Monster
My machine is 15 years old and was my first espresso machine. It has made a lot of coffee and I have taken this machine with me on vacation. It's lightweight, Compact and does perform the action of making espresso and latte. If you are the type that likes to be very hands-on and show off your skills as a barista then you might really like this machine. The Italian design is definitely something to show off on your kitchen counter. (Posted on 12/2/2014)
