Overview

When you're at the start of a busy workday, every ounce of consistency (and coffee!) matters. Add a dose of repeatability to your espresso workflow with the Ona Coffee Distribution tool. The OCD's four sloped blades create a gorgeously groomed puck with a few quick turns of its knurled outer edges, and offers quick adjustment for any 58mm portafilter basket. Designed as a triple threat to improve declumping, leveling and particle distribution in your espresso pucks, the OCD will have you pulling perfect bottomless portafilter shots in no time.

Features and Functionality of the OCD Coffee Distribution Tool - V2

  • Stepless Adjust - Just like your favorite grinder, you can set the OCD's blade depth between 0.25'' and 0.5'' deep, with conveniently numbered reference points.
  • Heavy-duty - Constructed from heavy brass blades and a knurled aluminum handle, the OCD tool weighs in at over a pound of sturdy, low-static metal.
  • Sloped Blades - Create a perfectly even coffee bed (no edge-only shots!) with a level pre-tamp.
Pros
  • Too Easy - This has become an instant addition to our office brew setup, often completely removing the need for a tamp (and lets us pull really neat looking bottomless shots with brand new grinders!).
  • Technique Test - If you play with new coffees or other variables often, you'll find the leveling prowess of the OCD tool invaluable in dialing in espresso. It becomes very clear when you need to adjust dose or grind.
  • Heavyweight - The OCD is heavy and feels bigger than it really is in the hand. This premium weight almost begst to be picked up and used every shot.
Cons
  • Jury's Out - We've seen a fantastic improvement in our everyday espresso shots, but this tool is definitely designed for improving workflow in a busy coffeeshop.
  • Expensive - Easily the cost of a luxury custom tamper.
SCG Staff Says... We first noticed the OCD Tool during our recent trip to 49th Parallel Coffee Roasters in Vancouver. They use the OCD tool in all of their cafe locations.
How Does it Compare? The V2 improves on almost every aspect of the original OCD tool. Its heavier, more ergonomic and easier to adjust.

with the V1 OCD, coffee always sticks to the bottom (ranging from 0.1 g to 0.3g). Have you found any real improvement in this regard with v2?

Best Answer: Nope, similar retention compared against the V1. That said, I've found it to entirely be based off of static in the grinds.

I bought this for a wholesale coffee customer of mine. It was one of several items they are using to replace a Swift grinder that was getting expensive in its old age.

I set the depth by in screwing the OCD to where the grooming part was set way too low in the basket, then put it on top of a dry, properly tamped and dosed puck. From there I screwed it back into the OCD until the device sat on the basket rim, then gave it another half turn to retract the grooming part and tightened it. That setting has worked well.

I feel it took a while to get seasoned, and keeping it dry is as important as keeping your tamper base dry. Early on I kept getting the imprint of the OCD. After the metal had been seasoned I started getting good prep with no evidence of grooming. In other words- a flat surface which was easy to tamp.

Using wide La Marzocco baskets the shots pulled very well, no donut extractions or off center pulls.

This has exceeded my expectations and is very useful (along with a calibrated tamper and a grinder that does timed doses) when there are many employees who make espresso drinks.

Using the OCD is relatively quick and very easy. Sure, it may be expensive, but you'll never have to buy another one unless you lose it. It's a solid device that must have taken a while for the designers to get just right and they deserve to be rewarded for their work.

It might be hard to justify this for home use where you have more time and can use the WDT or other distribution methods. That's a judgement calll of course.

If I had my way all my wholesale customers would have a grinder that dose timed dosing (and/or a scale), the OCD and a calibrated tamper set for a pretty light tamp.

Great tool, works as advertised, and pays for itself by eliminating wasted coffee. I was wasting a good deal of coffee leveling the dose. Now, no more wasted coffee, and every dose is perfectly level. Changes in beans usually requires adjusting the OCD depth level, but this doesn't require any special tools and is done in just a few seconds. (Posted on 5/3/2017)
