Let the force of the panarello style steam wand whip you up frothy milk for lattes, cappuccinos or mochas—the choice is yours! Plus, the removable water reservoir and brew unit makes cleaning up a snap and ensures fresh coffee every time.

Features and Functionality of the Saeco Xsmall Superautomatic Espresso Machine - Certified Refurbished

  • Ceramic Burr Grinder - Ceramic burrs keep cool and preserve the delicate flavors of your beans.
  • Energy-saving Mode - The machine saves power by going into stand-by mode after an hour.
  • Volumetric Controls - Customize your perfect espresso shot with two programmable-shot time buttons.
  • Automatic Rinse Cycle - An automatic rinse cycle before and after stand-by mode ensures a clean machine and fresh cup.

I have an old vienna plus and want to replace with something that makes a 6-8 ounce cup to start the day. Does the Xsmall do this?
Michael G on Dec 23, 2016
Best Answer: I'm not familiar with the vienna plus but I understand your question to be whether this can make a 6-8oz cup of coffee.

This is what I use it for everyday. You push the coffee button twice and it'll make a good, rich, robust cup of coffee (like a European americano). You can adjust each shot or cup of coffee to pull longer if you want more ounces but it'll be lighter. So I think I set mine to 4oz per coffee button push, which requires 2 presses. Basically it's 2 servings of beans (think 2 shots of espresso) for a full cup of coffee.

Hope that makes sense.

Is starbucks espresso an oily bean?
A shopper on May 3, 2017
Best Answer: Generally Starbucks roasts will be too oily for a superautomatic. However a few roasts seem to work well, like their Veranda Blend.

Hope this helps

Feel like I got a steal!Review by John from Texas
TLDR version- like new, good coffee, great deal.

Full review -

My new (or at least new to me) machine arrived this morning. After a test-drive, here's what I think.

Packing- Seattle Coffee Gear did a fantastic job of protecting the machine and the Rattleware shot pitchers I ordered to go with it. I wish every on-line vendor took the time to do likewise. Clearly, these folks care about getting it right.

Apperance - Other than some staining from coffee grounds near the bean hopper (no doubt generated during servicing and inspection) the unit looks brand spanking new. The case is in pristine condition and even the water tank, grounds catcher, and drip tray show virtually no sign or ware and tear. Whoever owned this machine first clearly didn't use it very much. If anything, it looks like an open box or floor model, not a referb.

I will also add that I bought the white and gray version because it was the cheapest in-stock option the day I ordered and I was too impatient to wait for other options to become available and too broke to upgrade. My wife and I weren't sure we would like this color, but now that it is on our counter, it is actually very attractive.

Performance - After unboxing, I took the machine through the rinse cycle as instructed in the owner's manual. The controls are very simple and intuitive.

I loaded the machine with some monsooned Malabar and gave her a go. The quality of the shot is smooth and flavorful, far better than shots from our $90 pressurized machine the Xsmall is replacing. Shots pull faster than I would like (I didn't time it precisely, but it sure wasn't a full 25-30 seconds.) Even so, the flavor, texture, and crema were on point. With the top button now set at just over an ounce and the bottom at four ounces, I am happy with both my standard shot and my lungo/Americano.

The pannarello wand on this unit froths VERY quickly. It was a struggle to prevent the milk from foaming over while waiting for it to get hot enough. I'm in for a learning curve compared to my other machine, but I was able to make my wife, who is picky about milk texture, a suitable latte. She even skipped her usual shot of salted caramel syrup this morning because she liked the flavor of the espresso that much.

At this point, my only minor complaint is that the water sensor thinks the tank is empty when it still has enough water to pull a few more shots, meaning that I will have to top up the water slightly more often. However, that really isn't a big deal in the grand scheme of things.

Now, it is a referb, so I'm not sure how much life this Xsmall has left in her, but it looks and functions like a new machine and the two year extended warranty from SCG gives me piece of mind.

The bottom line is that if you want to dip your toes in the ocean of super-automatic espresso without paying an arm and a leg, give one of these Xsmall referbs a go. (Posted on 9/30/2017)
Love this Machine!Review by Bayfrontnaturals
I have had several machines, A Breville Dual Boiler, which is my favorite, a Saeco Poemia, a Saeco Syntia, and this Saeco XSmall. I use the Dual Boiler daily, and I love it, but I wanted an easy machine to take on vacation to the mountains. Last year I took the Poemia, but it’s a messy bit of work, so I bought this machine. I love how easy it is to use, even my 13 year old can use it! She makes herself a latte every day. Also, it makes wayyyless mess than my Saeco Syntia Superauto made. I had to get the vacumn out to clean that one! This thing is a workhorse. It makes every bit as good of an espresso as the Syntia, which cost me 899$! You cannot beat this machine, and it’s a smaller footprint. You’ll love it! I got the refurbished model, and it had virtually no wear on it. (Posted on 9/23/2017)
Love it!!!Review by J.R.
I am so happy with this espresso machine! I got it for mothers day & have been using everyday, multiple times a day, ever since! My morning espresso is so much better then a local coffee shop makes. This little machine blows me away! I don't have anything negative to say about it?! It was well worth the purchase. Even being a refurbished item it was like brand new when I got it! Now my family members are waiting for more to come in stock so they can buy 1! (Posted on 7/11/2017)
Makes morning latte so simpleReview by Bebe
I just wanted a delicious and affordable cup of latte every morning and afternoon. That's exactly what I got with my Xsmall. I've had it long enough to put it through a descaling cycle and find it super easy to use with very little maintenance. I could have bought this new for a little more elsewhere but decided to buy a refurbished machine from Seattle Coffee Gear because I figured it was the best way to get a machine that would work right out of the box. The machine looked new and has performed flawlessly. (Posted on 5/27/2017)
Easy to use and makes good espressoReview by CoffeeloverinOR
This is our first espresso maker. We did lots of research before settling on the Xsmall. The SCG video guides were great and helped us make our decision (Gail is a hoot and does a great job of demonstrating the machines!). We wanted a machine that made quality espresso, but wasn't too labor intensive for those busy mornings when time was short and fit in our budget. We got with the Xsmall. It's as simple as filling the water tank, adding beans and pressing the button. The frother does a decent job as well and cleaning is easy.

A couple things to be aware of: We like to alternate between caffeinated and decaf. This can be a little tricky until you figure out just the right amount of beans for the amount of espresso you are making, since you can't really empty the hopper between shots. Also, we love dark roast coffee blends, and you can't use the oily beans in this machine, That said, we are enjoying experimenting with medium roasts (just can't go light!). We have found that a good medium roast on a fine grind setting will produce a nice, robust shot of espresso.

Will definitely purchase from SCG again, and hope to visit a store on our next trip to Seattle.

Great machine in a small form factorReview by lawrence
I read so many negative reviews from Amazon about this unit that I was afraid I got a dud. But I received this a week ago and have been using it almost non-stop, brewing 3-5 cups a day! So far I really like it!

I consider myself pretty knowledgeable in the coffee world as opposed to a person who just likes to drink coffee (maybe there are more of the latter on Amazon). I was a barista and use a manual espresso machine at home. At the office I wanted something that I could use that was automatic and this works perfectly.

The way I put it is that it functions like a Nespresso machine (hold on, read the rest!) but has the quality of a real espresso machine! It's a good size (still more hefty than a Nespresso) but it probably has similar water capacity - it might make 3 cups of coffee including cleaning.

I use Groundworks Black Magic espresso beans (medium) and it makes it amazingly. I also have it set to the finest grind (can't imagine anything less). It starts up quickly, does a quick rinse and you're ready to go.

I have personally set the coffee button to over extract a bit longer so it fills up like 10oz vs the default 6-8oz. I think it's better this way. The coffee does take a bit longer to extract because the water doesn't drip super fast, but it's worth the wait (maybe 90 sec).

So far, it cleans easily. At the end of the day I pour our the drip tray into a waste basket bag and empty the espresso bin. I have to do this because I'm not near a sink/kitchen.

Seriously, after coupon, I got this for $x..! That's a fabulous automatic espresso machine for the price of that other dude (Nespr.... i can't even). (Posted on 9/29/2016)
