How Does it Compare?

A Note About Coffee & Cups

Let us break it down for you: Although 8 ounces equals a cup in the baking world, a US cup of coffee is measured at 6 ounces and a European cup of coffee is measured at 4.25 ounces. This is why we sometimes list ounces to paint a more accurate picture of capacity.

Tips and Tricks

The Technivorm H741 is a model where the filter basket sits directly on top of the carafe. There is no brew-through mixing tube lid like on other models. It does come with a serving lid though.

Hello what is the difference between the H741 (as listed on this item) and the K741? Thanks
A shopper on Jun 17, 2013
Best Answer: The difference between the Technivorm K and H 741 are that the K 741 has an additional toggle switch at the base for half heat under the carafe while the H 741 has just one switch. That means that this H 741 at the lower price point does not allow for you to put half heat under the carafe after you are done brewing, and will always be at the full heat.

Hello, trying to find a machine that doesnt use internal plastic plumbing. These appear to be perfect in every way, just curious if the water is heated in and travels up a plastic tube? Thanks!
A shopper on Feb 25, 2013
Best Answer: Unfortunately this unit does use an internal piece that is plastic to carry your heated water to the grounds, however the plastic in the Technivorm is BPA Free.

Hello there. I was wondering how the Technivorm K 741 does with brewing less than a full pot of coffee (say 5 4-oz cups instead of the full 10 4-oz cups)? I see that some of the other Technivorm models have the ability to switch the basket filer to a 1/2 sized pot of coffee, but that the lower priced K 741 does not. Are there any concerns with the coffee not tasting as good when only brewing a half pot? Thanks!
Kevin S on Jan 7, 2013
Best Answer: Yes, 1/2 pot is wonderful:)

Since the H 741 brew basket doesn't have the manual adjust for brewing ½ pot of coffee (2-5 cups) so as to manually slow the drip to allow for longer saturation time, what could be done otherwise to allow for longer saturation time while brewing less or ½ pot to have a stronger tasting coffee? For ex, would it be extremely foolish to use two filter papers for brewing ½ pot? Thanks very much for the answer.
mailtovishal on Jan 4, 2015
Best Answer: Hello Vishal. I must say that I do not notice any marked difference in a half, or smaller pot of coffee. I think that two filter papers may cause an overflow, but I cannot say for sure because I have never attempted to do so. I guess I would try adding a little more ground coffee, if a small pot was not strong tasting enough for you. I must also add, that I do not regret buying the Moccamaster, it makes very good, hot coffee! I am very satisfied with it, even a year later. I also clean it, inside and out, every month, without fail. Seattle Coffee gear, is a good place, great customer service. I hope this helps, If I can answer any more questions, please do not hesitate to ask.

Does a Chemex 8 cup (handle version) brewer fit as a replacement of the Carafe and filter holder?

Chemex Glass Handle Coffee Maker 2-6 Cup
Chemex Glass Handle Coffee Maker 2-6 Cup
Best Answer: Yes, the Chemex we carry with the glass handle (2-6 cup) is only 8.375" tall, so it will fit underneath the spray arm on the Technivorm H741. However, keep in mind that the Chemex is not intended to be on a heating plate, so I don't know if you might see some adverse effects like cracking or breaking. It would be a better idea to use it with the Technivorm KBTS741 or even the taller thermal carafe options so that you don't have to worry about a heating plate contacting the Chemex.

Which is better, paper filters or the Gold Tone Filter?
A shopper on Sep 16, 2014
Best Answer: Personal preference does vary, but typically a gold tone filter for this Technivorm or any coffee brewer allows flavorful coffee oils to travel through to your final cup but may be too strong for some folks. A paper filter does not allow oils to pass through and so may be slightly milder, but is also easier to clean up. You may want to try both and see what flavor you prefer!

I drink only 1 to 1 1/2 cups of coffee in the morning (a blend of dark, med, and light beans, with a tablespoon of St. Brendan's Irish cream liqueur add to the cup of coffee) made in a JCPenny's COOKs coffee maker. That's it for the day! I am trying to decide between buying a Hario V6 02 pour over dripper and the Technivorm H741 to get a better cup of coffee.
1. Since I need to brew only one-half a pot with the Technivorm H741 to get the fresh coffee I want each morning, would this be a better coffee maker for me than a Hario V60 pour over? The time required to make the coffee and the expense of the Technivorm are really not important.
Since this coffee maker doesn't have a switch to turn off the hotplate and is designed to heat the hot plate for 100 minutes, do you just unplug the maker, or would it be better to install a simple switch into the electrical outlet and then connect the Technivorm's plut into it.?
bruce g on Aug 1, 2014
Best Answer: If you're looking to brew half carafes, you would get the best results from a Technivorm model with a manual drip stop, such as the KB741. The H741 model just allows liquid to flow through the brew basket at one rate of flow, while the KB741 has a drip stop that can be adjusted into the middle position (partially closed) in order to allow the water to remain on the grounds longer if you're brewing a half carafe. Both the H741 and the KB741 have On/Off switches on their base, so you would not need to unplug the machine to turn off the hotplate. They both also have an auto shut off in case you do forget to turn off the unit. If you don't mind heating your water separately, though, you may be happier with a basic Hario V60 to make one cup at a time, as the Technivorms would take up more space on your counter and are designed to make larger quantities of coffee. The choice is yours though, and both make great coffee! Hope this helps!

Hello. I noticed this model does not have the brew-through or de-stratification tube. Is it possible to purchase the replacement glass carafe with the tube and use it with this model, or because the basket sits atop the glass carafe it simply does not fit with the tube component? Thanks for your help.
A shopper on May 22, 2014
Best Answer: While the lid with mixing tube does fit on the Technivorm H741's carafe, unfortunately yes, you are correct that placing the lid with mixing tube on this model would impede the brew basket from seating onto the carafe correctly. For a model with the mixing tube in the carafe, I would suggest looking at the KBG741 and KB741 models.

Does the hot plate have a switch to turn it off?
A shopper on Apr 3, 2014
Best Answer: This model does not have a switch to turn off the hot plate, unfortunately. The machine has an automatic shut off after 100 minutes which will power the heat plate off.

Does the k741 warming plate operate at a higher temp than the low setting on the kb741?
A shopper on Jan 7, 2014
Best Answer: This is not something I have tested, however it is my understanding that the hotplate on the Technivorm H741 is at a higher temperature than the low setting on the other models like the KB741. I could not find this information on Technivroms website, but they may be able to offer you specifics if you contact them directly at Sorry I can't be of greater assistance on this for you!

Best Answer: This Technivorm does not have a grinder, and so you cannot use whole beans in this machine, only preground coffee.

moccamasterReview by carol
I've had this coffeemaker for a number of years and it is, delicious coffee.
i've had to buy a second pot cause my husband broke the first one. When this one finally goes...I will definitely buy another moccamaster , but I will certainly upgrade.....Love, love, love it (Posted on 10/28/2016)
Descent coffee, mediocre design and the worst usability everReview by KofyKrinder
I curse the day when I and my wife recieved this machine as a gift few years ago. My wife thinks the machine is nice since it's "a genuine and expensive Moccamaster", but that does not remove the fact that this specific machine has the worst design and usability ever.

First of all, this machine takes almost three times the counter space compared to all my previous coffee makers. Not only that the platform is twice the size compared to most all-vertical machines, all the other loose parts (pot cap & filter cone) need their own space, and thanks to no drip-lock, makes a mess on the table every time (unless you have an extra towel /plate/cap/etc. all the time with you - see the end of the video). This may not be a problem in a big kitchen with a lot of counter space, but for smaller kitchens it's an everyday hell.

The coffee itself is quite the same as any descent 50$ machine can make, so there's nothing special there either. For the quality and usability this machine is highly over priced, and personally I cannot recommend this for anyone but my worst enemies. (Posted on 12/21/2015)
Get the version with the thermal carafeReview by Don
Technivorm is the best home coffee maker available, albeit expensive. We have this model, with a glass carafe. But I don't like the change in the coffee on the warming plate, even if it is turned down to the 185 degree position, so I usually transfer it immediately to a thermal carafe. Should have bought the model with the thermal carafe in the first place. And, that is my advice to you. (Posted on 12/9/2015)
Fantastic!Review by VM
Yes, this is the more "budget" version - I purchased the higher end one for my mother, and it made great coffee, and I purchased this for myself, and it makes great coffee; I can't tell the difference, taste-wise. I make about a half-pot, so keep that in mind. It brews quickly, is fun to watch, and most importantly, tastes great! Pro tip: after it's done brewing, take off the water reservoir lid and set the filter holder on top of it, then you won't get drips anywhere.
Caveat: I received the Illy pre-ground coffee with the machine and I don't think that's a good match. The grind is too fine and it takes forever to go through the filter, but grinding my own coffee was perfect. (Posted on 9/28/2015)
Disapointed...Review by Thomas
We were eagerly waiting to get this machine - had great expectations, but had to return it. There were two reasons:
1. We like strong coffee and load up on the coffee in the basket. This was not a problem with our 20 year old Rowenta, but this caused the brew basket of the H741 to overflow. We had to reduce the coffee substantially to not have overflow. We believe the reason for this is the poorly designed brew basket, where the internal ridges are very widely spaced and shallow and this does not allow the basket to drain properly.
2. The machine itself is beautiful and solid. However the glass carafe and brew basket are very poor quality - very thin plastic and glass. The handle of the carafe deforms under the weight of the full carafe. Inappropriate to pair these components with a high end machine.
Seattle Coffee Gear on the other hand were very prompt first with the delivery of the machine, and then very helpful with the return. I can recommend them for your coffee related purchases. (Posted on 8/10/2015)
Best Coffee makerReview by JimJ55
I have owned 2 Technivorm coffee makers in the past 28 years the first lasted about 15 years and still worked just all of the plastic parts started to degrade so replaced the unit. This current one is starting to experience same issue with plastic parts but still makes a 200 degree pot every time. Would not consider any other brand this is in my opinion the best coffee maker available. (Posted on 5/22/2015)
Questionable QualityReview by Frank
For the price I would have expected a better quality brewer and repair service. After 6 months the on-off button "froze". We paid shipping costs to west coast for its repair under warranty. Two weeks later our "fixed" brewer arrived. However, the new on-off switch was not connected to the auto hot plate shut off. Fixed one thing, broke another.
Makes good coffee however quality not worth premium price. (Posted on 2/17/2015)
Everything I had hoped for.Review by Jamey
Solid, no-nonsense, makes superior coffee. Cost a bit more than other coffee makers in its range, but expect this to last. Would definitely highly recommend this coffeemaker to anybody who appreciates a better brew. (Posted on 2/8/2015)
OutstandingReview by Poppa333
If you are serious about your coffee, this is the ONLY coffee maker that rivals the quality of the coffee houses. Two pots to fine tune the coffee to water ratio and the best coffee is consistently delivered. The LAST coffee maker I will buy. (Posted on 7/13/2014)
We love this moccamasterReview by jass
We have had this coffee maker for at least three years and have been very happy with it. The coffee is good--of course the kind of coffee also makes a different (we use Millstone Columbian Supremo from Sams in giant bags, whole beans). This coffee maker doesn't grind the beans, so must be done separately, and does not have an automatic timer. But it has been worth it because the taste is great. When and if it goes out, probably will get another. (Posted on 2/24/2014)
FantasicReview by CoffDrink
Makes a HOT gorgeous cup of coffee! No bells, no whistles, the money is in the guts. A copper boiler with enough umph to bring the water to the correct temperature in the right amount of time. Fantastic cup of joe! And, as an added bonus, it is NOT made in China! (Posted on 2/3/2014)
Great BrewerReview by Vargas
I have owned this machine for over a year now and I don't really know how it is that I used other conventional coffee brewers before this. Alternatives to this brewer are only in the non tech world, such as French Press, Aeropress, Clever, Hario V60, etc.. Great quality, no problems. Looks great, sleek and clean. (Posted on 10/11/2013)
PerfectionReview by Russ
The perfect cup of coffee, temperature is 205 degrees, and the hot plate keeps the coffee hot for over an hour. No bells and whistles, you can't drink them anyway - but you can certainly enjoy the perfect cup of coffee with the Moccamaster (Posted on 9/3/2013)
Little Better Than A Mr.. CoffeeReview by Jack
After one a half months service and about 3 lbs of coffee this thing quit brewing and trips the ground fault interrupt breaker. For the price one pays for this you would think it would be a little more reliable after all we're talking about pouring hot water over coffee grounds. Sadly it is no better than a cheap Mr. Coffee machine at fraction of the cost. No more fancy machines for me I'm going low tech with a Chemex Classic 6-cup (30 oz) Coffee Maker and a tea kettle.

Makes great coffee quickly, but burns what's left in the pot.Review by Michael
This machine makes terrific coffee, and makes it quickly. My complaint - like the earlier review - is that you can't make more than you want to dirnk immediately. The "warming plate" is so hot it burns what's left in the pot in a couple minutes. (Posted on 3/6/2013)
Wonderful CoffeeReview by Michael
I love the machine. It makes great coffee from 8 oz to about 40 oz. The only problem - in my opinion - is you need make just enough to drink as it keeps the carafe too hot and the coffee burns quickly. (Posted on 2/7/2013)
Excellent! No other match!Review by Christine
The first time I saw this coffee maker was when my dad, the biggest coffee enthusiast, showed it to me on It was a woman doing reviews on which makers were the best. She rated the Technivorm at the top and it made the hottest and best tasting coffee by far from the other makers. I was skeptic, but my dad went on about it. So I bought it for him for Christmas and I was totally sold on how well it performed! It was the best tasting and hottest cup of java I ever had! We are going to buy ourselves one very soon. :) (Posted on 12/28/2012)
K-741 is Fantastic!Review by Andrew
Now that we have the Technivorm K-741 we no longer even care about our French Press. Spent a good bit of time researching when we decided to look for a new maker, and considered the Bonavita as well. But why not go for the real deal? Technivorm has outstanding quality reputation and I like the fact that this unit is assembled and tested by hand; by people who know what they are doing. Plus the proper type copper boiler instead of aluminum alloy is well worth the cost.

Had my reservations with it being slightly less featured. The K-741 turns out to be a really terrific coffee maker. Note that if you require a shiny bling object, this may not do it for you being a matte finish. With the retro look it fits right into our classic modern 1964 home. We also love the 1 Liter size. It's plenty enough (6 regular coffee cups for a pot) for having company over as well. We set up the fresh grind and walk away until it's done. It's simple to setup, easy to use, and makes a fine cup of coffee. Nothing lacking here.

To summarize: We are share a love of excellent coffee at our house, and the Technivorm K-741 indeed produces the best, smoothest, most drinkable pot of coffee that we have had anywhere. That may sound bold but you'll see for yourself when you have your own. I'm so pleased with our entire transaction through Seattle Coffee Gear. Whole heartedly recommended. (Posted on 11/8/2012)
