A Note About Coffee & Cups

Let us break it down for you: Although 8 ounces equals a cup in the baking world, a US cup of coffee is measured at 6 ounces and a European cup of coffee is measured at 4.25 ounces. This is why we sometimes list ounces to paint a more accurate picture of capacity.

Tips and Tricks

Water really does make a difference. Always use filtered water to make drip coffee taste better.

Most of the time I just want to make a cup or two of coffee....I am replacing a Cuisinart which has the 1-4 cup option. Will this be a problem for me?
A shopper on Nov 16, 2014
Best Answer: This KBG741 has an automatic drip stop, and so if you frequently brew half carafes I would recommend the KB741 instead. The advantage to going with a manual drip stop Technivorm like the KB741 is that if you brew lots of half carafes, then you can put the drip stop on the brew basket in the middle position. This will slow down the flow of coffee for fuller flavor and longer extraction if using half the amount of water and grounds. This does mean that you need to put the switch into the closed position in order to remove the carafe if you want to pour before the unit is done brewing. Otherwise the auto drip stop glass carafe model, the KBG741, does not have the middle position option on the basket, but the flow of liquid does stop automatically when you remove the carafe to pour. Hope this helps clarify!

I like the feature of the KBG741 that allows you to actually stop the brewing process mid-brew...but I really like the feature of the KB741 that allows you to adjust the filter holder to steep the grounds before brewing or set it to brew more slowly for half-batch brewing. Is the adjustable filter holder that comes on the KB741 compatible with this machine? I've also read complaints that the carafe on the KBG741 tends to dribble - I've been through that with another much of a problem is the carafe? Is the carafe on the KB741 better in this respect? Should I just go with the KB741?
A shopper on Apr 24, 2014
Best Answer: No, unfortunately the two brew baskets for the Technivorm KBG and KB models are not interchangeable, as the bottom of this KBG basket is rectangular while the KB model is circular. If you frequently brew half carafes, or just want to have a bit more control, then I would suggest the KB741 model over the KBG741. I have noticed that the carafe on the KBG741 does tend to drip a bit more during pouring than the KB741, but I have found that simply pouring a bit more slowly solves any dribbling that you may encounter. Hope this info helps!

at this current time we use a 24oz. cusunart, that states it makes 4, 6oz. cups. We like amug of java.
So i would just use 3 cups of water, with 4 scoops of coffee.
My question is to make the above amount of java with this Technivorm, and Euro's consider 4.25 a cup of coffee and to my knowledge you use 2 scoops per cup, what will I need to get my same results I am used to???
thanks.. Bob

Best Answer: I bought the 10-cup moccamaster coffeemaker awhile back. It comes with a scoop for the coffee. I followed directions to use one scoop of good quality coffee per two cups water - so a full pot of coffee would take just five scoops of coffee. I have found that it works quite well.

Assume this has a warming plate. Is it longer lasting than most other coffeemakers? Others tend to begin to rust.
Judi B on Apr 28, 2013
Best Answer: We have not had any customers report that their Technivorm warming plates have begun to rust, so I would not imagine that this is something you'd need to worry about. Keep in mind this machine does come with a 5 year warranty from the manufacturer, and it is very well made!

Cafe au Lait perfectionReview by Doug
Price and value are relative, but I'd say that after having experimented with an espresso maker with a PID and a built in steamer wand which is more expensive, I can now have a magnificent cup of coffee at a price I can live with.

I want to say upfront my drink of choice is cafe au lait, so perfect coffee plus perfect milk is my dream. I bought this coffee maker and added the Breville Milk Cafe (frother) and after at least ten years of searching for the perfect home coffee, the searching is over.

Perhaps it's too soon to say how happy I am, but these machine arrived yesterday, were unpacked today and I am happier than I have ever been with my coffee at home. I seriously doubt that there is a better cup available, but perhaps I haven't been to the best coffee shops.

All I can say is that while I was aware of the Technivorm machine in the past, I wanted to give lesser machines a try "just in case," and we needed a machine with a timer, but I should have done this long ago.

My only complaint and I hope to remedy it with an external timer is that I like to wake up to a pot of coffee in the morning. If this had a built in timer, it would be perfect (for me). I understand that this means the ground beans are out there overnight and the water isn't cold, but for me/us the timer would make this machine a complete no-brainer.

I made the decision to go with the Glass carafe because I have had the metal carafes with narrow tops in the past and they are a devil to keep clean. The great SCG video of the comparison of holding the coffee for one hour in the metal vs. glass, made the decision to go with glass easy.

I do have a Rancillio Rocky grinder which I bought about 6 months ago to complete the package.

I know all this gear is a lot of money upfront ($329 +$129+ $340=$798), but at the price of one cup of coffee out per day ($4?) , I'll be even in less than a year. I'd say that's worth it.

Love itReview by tari
I hope I am not writing this too soon, but I received my new coffee maker yesterday, as promised by the shipment updates.

I had a single serve machine for 9 months - and after replacing it once the 2nd died as well - both in less than 6 months each - so I was done with them - even though they were willing to send another replacement - I refuse to have to get a replacement every 3-6 months and the coffee wasn't good enough for me to put up with the headaches, so I went back to my old stand-by, Cuisinart. Although it is a faithful machine, the quality of the taste and temperature was just not there. So I started researching and came across this machine and the Seattle Coffee Gear site.

The machine is easy to install (unwrap and plug in) - and start using. and I have to admit that the coffee tastes wonderful - probably the best coffee that I have had at home in a very long time. Such a difference. The fact that there is not an auto-on/program capability may be a bit annoying, but as stated in the videos - it does truly brew the coffee in just a matter of minutes - much faster than my Cuisinart, so this really is not intolerable.

I also have to give credit and praise to the Seattle Coffee Gear company. I did quite a bit of research over the past several days on coffee makers and your pricing is very competitive - better than Amazon's offer from another coffee company - even taking into account their "free gifts" included. Your service was prompt, once I submitted my order and I even received the gift certificate email before my order shipped from you. Truly a pleasant experience. I only wish that you had a brick/mortar store in the Chicago area so that I could test some of the other coffees that you offer. The Twilight seems good, but I've only had one pot of it thus far - will probably use my gift certificate to try another.

And I do enjoy the videos on your site - they are funny but yet informative - thank you all so much. (Posted on 6/13/2014)
Technivorm Moccamaster Coffee Brewer KBG741Review by Linda
I can't say enough good things about this coffee pot. The temperature of the coffee is piping hot and the taste is unbelievably satisfying. We had a Cuisinart coffee pot prior to this one and I can't believe the difference in taste between the two machines. We always buy the same organic coffee and the Technivorm Moccamaster outperforms the Cuisinart in taste by a landslide. It does an outstanding job in bringing out the richness and full-bodied flavor of the coffee bean. I spent countless hours researching coffee brewers and it was well worth my time. You also won't find a better deal than the one Seattlecoffeegear offers their customers. They sell it for less than the competition and also give you a gold filter made in Germany (not China), white paper filters, some great coffee, and a $20 gift card to use at their store or online. A deal you don't want to pass up!! (Posted on 5/27/2014)
Excellent Drip MachineReview by Halevib
The first one I received actually had a faulty switch and a flaw in the glass carafe. However, SCG was great about providing a shipping label and exchanging it for a new one. Other than having to get excited about receiving it initially, sending it back, and waiting for the replacement to arrive - it has been a great experience.

It's obviously well made. It brews exceptional coffee. I've seen several reviewers balk at the price, but with it's quality of construction, copper heating element, and 5 year warranty it seems like a great deal. Everyone who's had any of the coffee I've made in it has been very impressed. It brews very quickly, is simple and easy to use. I'd definitely purchase again, and SCG has the best deal on it that I've found. (Posted on 5/10/2014)

This is a great machine and Seattle Coffee Gear was a great help in my decision. My only compaint involves the shipping. 3-5 days actually took 10. (Posted on 3/28/2014)
DeliciousReview by BrightEyed
This is by far my favorite drip coffee machine. By far the best drip coffee I have had. I love everything about it, apart from how fragile the carafe feels. The machine is easy to fill, and just as important it is easy to clean.

I should mention, if I weren't to have purchased this machine I would have certainly purchased the Bonavita. We have one at work, it too brews wonderful coffee. My reason being, I prefer having a glass carafe (although fragile) over the glass lined stainless carafe. (Posted on 3/15/2014)
Technivorm Moccamaster Coffee Brewer KBG741 - Black MetallicReview by Southern Sipper
I've only had this coffee maker for about a month, but so far it is living up to expectations. I went with the glass pot since this version comes with a carafe warmer, is easy to clean, and is cheaper than the thermal carafe version. I'm brewing about half a pot at a time and the coffee tastes smoother than what I'm used to. This may just be the coffee vs the coffee maker. Only time will tell. I feel like I got a good deal from SCG for the following reasons: cheaper than buying the same product on, free shipping, and the extras: bag of coffee, gold filter, paper filters, cleaning kit and $20 gift certificate. Everything else is a compromise. This is THE drip coffee maker.Review by ukiro
First, the important part: If you don't own this, you're going through life drinking lesser coffee. This is an upgrade for your quality of life as a whole.

I can't quite give it 5/5 for price but certainly for value: Honestly, once you get used to the quality of coffee from this machine you will not consider it expensive. A lot of money, sure, but but it delivers on every dollar. A skillful barista can rival it with a hand poured cup, but even with my Hario gear I could not achieve this level.

This current version has some minor refinements to the carafe and other details making it even easier to handle and clean. (Posted on 2/24/2014)
Excellent coffeeReview by M K from Indy
We needed a new coffee maker. Our old cuisnart stopped working. I did a lot of research and decided on the technivorm moccamaster. Although pricey, the quality of the coffee is unbelievable. I honestly did not think it would make that much difference, was I wrong. I would recommend to any serious coffee drinker. Simply unmatched (Posted on 1/12/2014)
