A Note About Coffee & Cups

Let us break it down for you: Although 8 ounces equals a cup in the baking world, a US cup of coffee is measured at 6 ounces and a European cup of coffee is measured at 4.25 ounces. This is why we sometimes list ounces to paint a more accurate picture of capacity.

Tips and Tricks

Water really does make a difference. Always use filtered water to make drip coffee taste better.

Can you brew fewer cups?
Amit C on Mar 13, 2014
Best Answer: The Technivorm KBG741 has the auto drip stop, meaning if you pull the carafe out mid brew, the flow of coffee will stop, allowing you to pour a cup before the until has finished brewing. The KB741 has a manual drip stop, meaning that before you pull out the carafe, you need to flip the toggle switch on the brew basket to stop the flow of liquid before you remove the carafe. The manual drip stop version, the KB741, also allows you to put the toggle switch into a half position to slow down the flow of liquid for brewing a half pot, when you'd use half the amount of grounds and water, while the KBG741 does not. For this reason, if you frequently brew fewer cups, I would recommend the KB741.

Is it true you can't use reverse osmosis water with this?
A shopper on May 30, 2013
Best Answer: Well, you are supposed to use filtered drinking water (i.e. Pur, bottled water) with all coffee makers to remove unwanted particles, but keep the mineral taste - but I have always used distilled water (similar to RO water) with my coffeemakers including this one, and have had no problems making delicious, hot coffee. Make sure you take your vitamins or drink tap water though!

Does this coffee maker make American and Expresso blends?
Mike A on Mar 17, 2015
Best Answer: This machine is a drip brewer and only makes drip coffee. You can put any kind of coffee blend into it, just keep the grind coarse enough for drip brew.

Does this model have the option to select between two temps, an auto shut off, ability to grab a cup before it is done, on and off heat pattern for holding the hot coffee?
Susan W on Jun 16, 2014
Best Answer: Yes, this Technivorm KBG741 offers two switches at the base for either half or full heat under the carafe (so two temps for the hot plate, but not two temps for brewing), an auto shut off after two hours, and an automatic drip stop that stops the flow of coffee if you remove the carafe during brewing to pour a cup. I am not quite sure what you mean by the on/off heat pattern for holding the hot coffee, but it does seem like this unit does meet what you're looking for! Please let us know if you have any other questions about it!

I'd been looking for a coffee machine that wasn't made in China, is handmade & came across Technivorm.
After some research I've decided that the Technivorm KBGC 741 AO YELLOW PEPPER is the machine that fits the bill.
Only one problem, I want the "Yellow Pepper" machine, Can Seattle Coffee Gear get this machine?
Bryan D on Nov 29, 2013
Best Answer: Hey Bryan,
Unfortunately we only offer the Technivorms in the colors on the website, and this Red Metallic is actually the only special color we offer, other than the Black, Silver, and White options. We can't special order the Yellow Pepper model for you, and I am sorry about that! Please let us know if you have any other questions, and know that if you choose a Technivorm you won't be disappointed with the coffee!

Needs repair at only three years oldReview by germanshepherd58
Purchased the Moccamaster based upon the recommendation of Seattle Coffee Gear. Paid $300, but thought it might be worth it if it was built solid, with quality, and would substantially outlast the cheaper coffee makers as represented by SCG. Now, with less than 3 years use, both of the plastic pieces that hold the two switches in place, have broken. I hope I can find replacement pieces, or else the coffee maker is junk. In any event, Technivorm needs to redesign this component, utilize better and more durable materials, if they want to justify their rather high prices.

An interesting note: Bought my Wife a Bonavita, at half the price, at about the same time I bought the Moccamaster, and the much cheaper Bonavita is still going strong. I guess you don't always get what you pay for! (Posted on 7/3/2017)
Excellent...Could/Should be better though!Review by GShack
I was a devote expresso drinker and never enjoyed any type of drip coffee due to the usual bitter/bad taste....This machine has won me over. I bought this to be able to serve more coffee at home instead of Aero-pressing every cup. Short story is it works great! I love the flavor I can get out of my coffee at home now. I paired it with a new grinder a few weeks later and this really brought things together (Breville Smart Grinder).

What Im not impressed with is that the plastic parts feel CHEAP! If this was a Mr. Coffee I wouldn't expect anything more, but this is a $300+ coffee maker and while the guts of it seem to be high quality w a backing warranty, and I enjoy the retro-ish look of it all... it still bothers me every time I pick up the filter basket. It also concerns me about BPA's and all that leaching that could go on with plastic. Not impressed with this as they have had plenty of time to retro-fit this with better quality plastic that is potentially safer. I don't doubt this will happen eventually but I will not be in the market to upgrade to a new $300 coffee machine anytime soon. Like I said. Good but SHOULD be better.

Great customer service and information from SCG as well!

Nice!Review by David
This coffee maker is really Nice. After watching hours of videos by the crew @ Seattle coffee gear and others, I decided to take the plunge. It makes a great cup of coffee. I've been a Bunn owner for a while, but decided I'd try something new. I'm very pleased with the unit itself, but the filter basket is somewhat flimsy. I would have liked for it to be a little stronger for the price I paid. Price was a little much. However, it is a great looking unit and makes a great cup of coffee! (Posted on 12/22/2014)
Great pot of coffee!Review by SouthRider
I was a little skeptical about all the rave reviews- but they are true.

This machine makes a great pot of coffee, hot as can be, and very fast too. Plus it is simple to use & looks great.

The price is high, but worth it to us. We wake up every morning, and say to each other how happy we are to have bought this machine (Posted on 11/5/2014)
Great--buy itReview by CC
Not only does it brew a great cup o joe at the perfect temperature, it is really well made. Normally in our hard water, coffee machines last a year or two. We go through a lot of coffee and this machine has had no problems for the last 5 years! Love it (Posted on 9/12/2014)
Fourth technivorm OwnedReview by gp
Like I say.. over the years, I've bought four of these... my first two were for myself and daughter... then I moved to Spain with my third purchase. The power in Spain is 220 and called Technivorm. they sent me the whole guts to convert the American machine and thats been going for 4 years. Then I was transferred to Saudi and bought another in Red like above. Everyone in the compound thought this was so cool. Now my sister is asking me to send her the link. So all in all, just amazing machines with great quality and best of all, the taste! (Posted on 9/9/2014)
I won't drink anything elseReview by anvil_36
This machine surpasses other machines by such a wide margin that 6 months after we purchased, my wife and I still congratulate each other on the best purchase of the year. Seems like a lot upfront, but a clear value when you taste the quality. Don't even hesitate to buy. BUY NOW! (Posted on 8/27/2014)
My coffee shop misses meReview by Cindy
Finally, coffee that tastes like coffee! I now stay home in the morning enjoying delicious coffee brewed quietly and beautifully in my red moccamaster. No more listening to the annoying gurgle from the old pot that sounded like a dog snoring, no more trying to pour the water in the tank, only to dribble half of it on the floor, and then, after trying to pour from the faulty carafe spout, willing the flavor to be in the cup.
I am thrilled with my new Moccamaster!

Great cup of CoffeeReview by Tsunamisboy
Brews very fast and rather quiet. Coffee tastes great and I love the look. I was a little reluctant to spend this kind of money but Seattle Coffee threw in so many extras it sealed the deal. (Posted on 4/3/2014)
Best coffee maker on the marketReview by Rochelle
This is my second Technivorm Moccamaster. My first one, which lasted more than 10 years, made fabulous coffee. This is even better. It heats water to to 200 degrees in practically no time, which translates into the perfect cup. I typically let the filter fill for about 30 - 40 seconds before sliding the carafe under the the filter cup. When I add whip milk to my coffee cup, the result is better than a capucchino. The Best!!!Review by Jenn
We have had this coffee maker for a couple of months, and it makes the best coffee ever! I was a little reluctant to spend so much money on this machine, but after doing my research, this brand seems to last many years making it well worth the initial cost. I am so glad I waited until the red metallic machine was back in stock, as it looks great on my kitchen counter. (Posted on 1/2/2014)
A Great cup of coffeeReview by JoeS
When the cuisinart burned up, it was panic time. It was a bit of a leap to spend the money but Cooks Illustrated has been mostly right on the money. After taking the chance I am not sorry one bit, it is a great machine for making a great cup of coffee. Life is too short to drink bad coffee and yet it is pervasive. Go for it., there is no going back. (Posted on 12/22/2013)
Great cup of coffee!Review by Anne
Have been using the Technivorm Moccamaster now for a few months and have no complaints. It makes a good cup of coffee. Someone remind me why I waited so long to order? For those who would like extra brewing time for 4-6 cups, I found if you start the machine without the coffee pot on the burner plate and then turn the machine off when the grounds are covered by water. Allow it to seep for a few minutes. Replace the pot and turn the machine back on and you will get better flavor. Do keep an eye on the water level in the basket so you turn the machine off or it will continue to brew and over fill the basket. Yes, I did find this out first hand and do not multitask now while brewing 4-6 cups. If the coffee maker were to break tomorrow I would not hesitate in replacing it with another Technivrom. Also Thank You Seattle Coffee Gear for the very quick shipment. (Posted on 11/24/2013)
Hand made plasticReview by robert
This does give a good cup of java, however you must make sure the pot is lined up so the coffee hits dead center down the hole. If not it will splash off the lid first? The heat plate is made well and expected the rest of the parts to be the same for the $$$. It's what it is. (Posted on 10/15/2013)
Great High-End MachineReview by TigrrLily
Overall this is making a great cup of coffee for me. I like that the parts are replaceable for years of use. I will probably buy one for my mom. It brews fast, so I don't need an overnight timer. I am able to keep it under my low cupboards--I fill it up using the extending squirt hose from my sink.

Some input:
I wish there were more of the Moccamaster colors available--I love the orange one they have on their site.

I wish I could get the more high-tech filter basket that allows for longer brewing for smaller batches.

Also, the light on the heating element switch never comes on for me--what is that supposed to indicate? (Posted on 10/6/2013)
wow!Review by saji
Just purchased the Moccamaster after owning a Bunn for 10+ years (and doing a l ot of research). My goal was not to find the cheapest, the prettiest, the easiest to use, the one that made the most coffee, nor the one that had bells and trinkets (like a clock/timer). All I wanted was the most delicious tasting cup of coffee that a home machine had to offer.
And-HALLELUYAH!! I have not been disappointed!!! This machine delivers an amazing and delicious cup of coffee, every time!! I absolutely love this yummy cup o joe!! Woot!! (Posted on 7/23/2013)
Great Coffee!Review by Charley
This is a fabulous machine - the coffee tastes great.

It looks great - I got it in red.

My only complaint is that it doesn't make enough - the other units are too tall to fit under my cabinets. It would be nice to have a unit that just made a few more cups but wasn't too much bigger. (Posted on 7/9/2013)
