A Note About Coffee & Cups

Let us break it down for you: Although 8 ounces equals a cup in the baking world, a US cup of coffee is measured at 6 ounces and a European cup of coffee is measured at 4.25 ounces. This is why we sometimes list ounces to paint a more accurate picture of capacity.

Pros
  • Well Designed - The Chemex Glass Handle Coffeemaker 2-6 Cups features a sophisticated all-glass profile
  • High Quality - Laboratory quality is a key component of the Chemex's construction
  • Simple and Easy to Use - Free of frills and unnecessary bells and whistles, the Chemex features a minimalist design that's incredibly easy to operate
Cons
  • Fragile - Glass products such as the Chemex Glass Handle Coffee maker 2-6 Cups require extra care to ensure they do not break
How Does it Compare?

The Chemex Glass Handle Coffee maker is a brewer and a server in one, not separate pieces like a Hario product. Just get the special Chemex filter and you are all set.

Tips and Tricks

The thicker portion of the folded Chemex filter goes towards the pour spout/air intake.

Tom Hunter asked: Can this product be placed on a gas burner on the stove, in order to heat up / reheat coffee?

We already drip our coffee directly into cups with ceramic filter holders. But my wife likes to add a lot of milk to hers, which makes the coffee too cool. So I'm looking for something that can heat the coffee to a higher temp before pouring it in with the milk. That's why I want to use this product to heat the coffee.

Do you have any other suggestions for making drip coffee (no plastic) that is hot enough to mix with milk?

Thanks, Tom Hunter

Elizabeth S: Chemex's website says: "Because the Chemex is glass, it should not be placed directly on the range of a stove with exposed coils. It may be placed on a glass covered stove range. For exposed coils utilize the Chemex wire grid."

So, no I wouldn't put it on a gas burner.

With the drip coffee using the ceramic filter holder, my boyfriend told me that when he wants milk with his coffee, he places the mug with the milk inside, directly into a saucepan as water is warming up in it. This way, he heats the mug and warms up the milk, before he starts the drip process. Hopefully, I explained his process clearly enough. Good luck. :)

Jodi D: Hi Tom,

Instead of heating the coffee to a higher temperature, which can change the chemical make up of the coffee, try to heat the milk before adding it. I would recommend looking for a product than can heat the milk adequately without burning it.

I bought four of these Chemex a few weeks ago and love the coffee it produces! However, I would never recommend reheating the coffee regardless of the method.

Thanks,
Jodi

Tom Hunter: I appreciate your advice not to reheat coffee. I would still like to understand if the Chemex drippers can be placed on a burner.

Edward P: I don't think you can put this directly on the stove, at least that is not something we did in the laboratory back in the day. Why don't you microwave the milk and then add it to the coffee. It works fine. The pot makes delicious coffee. You do not want to heat the coffee up to add milk. Coffee likes it a few degrees below boiling. Milk on the other hand doesn't mind the heat. Apr 18, 2013

The Chemex is great. It takes about four minutes to brew up to the three cup mark (about 15 oz.) and whatever we don't drink at once, stays nicely on the "warming zone" burner on the glass-top stove. This, by itself, is amazing, and is a savings of time and money. We use fresh beans and grind them just before brewing. The carafe is easy to clean and looks good. Love the glass handle!

Makes wonderful coffee. The handle is a big improvement over the wooden grips. The handle is also aesthetically pleasing. I have found it to be dishwasher safe.

Product was shipped quickly and packaged well to ensure no breaking. I was expecting a thinner (and more likely to break) glass, but was pleasantly surprised with the quality and thickness of the glass!
