A shopper asked: on using grindz burr grinder alternative
....after i watched a youtube demo of it, a series of other 'how to clean...'' also came up
...one in particular was on cleaning your spice (blade) grinder using plain white rice, both to clean the oils and aborb
any odors...can and will white rice be as good to clean the coffee GRINDER as the product 'grindz'?

Laura M: I've never used white rice b/c I've never HAD TO! All I can tell you is TRY GRINDZ first b/c it really DOES work! I use to use Grindz EVERY SINGLE TIME I used my grinder. Over time, I methodically studied the oil residue build-up on the burrs. I now use Grindz after NO MORE THAN 4 uses of the grinder. This said, I use a hand-vac to also get the loose grounds out from the shoot after EACH AND EVERY use.
While you don't have to be as strict as I am, I'd still recommend cleaning your burrs frequently. Coffee oils and residues can "kill" your equipment. If you get a "bad bean" or don't clean your equipment often, the residue will build-up. Not only will your coffee not taste good but trying to get your equipment "back to normal" after residue has "attacked" can be exhausting. What you want to do is simply be in a routine of regular Grindz cleanings so your burrs (and taste buds) are happy. I highly recommend also using a hand-vac to regularly clean out the grounds shoot.
Also, Urnex brand makes "Wipz" a product DESIGNED for coffee oil residue. After I use Grindz, I use Wipz to wipe down the grounds bin, hopper and hopper lid. I then use a mild soap and hand wash these parts. Lastly, I use the bristle brush to clean the burr (and, no joke, also use q-tips to literally make it PERFECT). Like I said, my "methods" are probably a bit much but that's just me. Even if you don't use the Wipz, hand vac, q-tips or hand-wash the parts frequently, please PLEASE be kind to your burrs and DO be sure and use Grindz frequently. It's AMAZING!

avital a: I wouldn't use rice to clean a burr grinder, to my best recolection (i cant check that now), the GRINDZ is softer (dense powder) and its size is like a coffee bean and not rice. It turns into powder instantly, in fact, the instructions say to run it in a "French press? setting. I believe that running rice through a coffee grinder might harm the burrs. As for blade grinders intended for spice, since they are intended to grind spices like pepper balls and other with similar size and texture- I see the logic of using rice, but still, rice needs time to absorb and I am not sure it can even absorb oils at all. To sum it up, I would not use rice ! (having said that... I am not that impressed with GRINDZ but having no alternative as I cannot reach the burrs easily with my grinder, I use it. Previous grinder I used to open up and clean the burrs myself). Hope this helps! Jul 30, 2013

Teri KStaff: The product Grindz becomes a power as it runs through your coffee grinder, and it also has an additive that removes residual coffee oil build up on the interior and burrs of the grinder. Rice is a harder material that will not break down as well into a power and so I would imagine it does not remove oils like this product. For these reasons, I would recommend Grindz over rice, but we have not done a side by side test. If you do, let us know what you think! Jul 30, 2013

James A W: I use Grindz and I think it is a good product. From what I can tell, the product is mostly grain-based, but I really don't think it is 100% rice which tends to be a hard substance when it's raw.

For a cheap blade grinder, it might be worth a try, but I don't recommend it for a higher end burr grinder. I suggest you stick with what works: Grindz

Garrell H: I wouldn't try to clean my grinder with rice. It's harder than coffee beans. The Grindz is softer than the bean. Would you be OK with replacing the grinder, if the rice eventually wore down whatever grinds the coffee? I really have no idea whether the rice would be ok or not. Good luck! Jul 30, 2013

Luis S: If you are going to use or buy a Bur grinder I would only use Grindz. I've had a Rocky for 3 years using Grindz only when I change beans of different roast/blend. Still works like it was new. No aftertaste or residue left. I think rice would clump the grinder. Jul 30, 2013

Jean P: Hi,

I have no idea whether rice is a reasonable alternative to Grindz. Have not tried it. I do know that Grindz works quite well. We have been using it for some time and are quite pleased with the results.

Juan G asked: Can I use this to clean the Burr Grinder on the Capresso CoffeeTEAM GS? Feb 6, 2014
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
Teri KStaff: You can use Grindz as long as you are able to run this product through the unit and then clear it out completely before brewing, as it can expand and make a mess if it comes into contact with water. Provided you are able to stop the brewing process and dump out your basket right after using it, you should be safe to use Grindz. Feb 6, 2014

A shopper asked: I bought this product from you about a year ago, then found out I have Celiac Disease (gluten allergy). I called you guys and asked if you had coffee grinder cleaner that was gluten free because GRINDZ says on the label wheat. I was told no. I gave away my $20 container of GRINDZ. Has the product changed to gluten free recently? Jan 2, 2014
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
Teri KStaff: While Urnex has changed the formula of Grindz recently, the smaller boxes we offer are still listing wheat ingredients, and so I think we may still occasionally be receiving a mixed supply. I checked our stock of these larger containers, however, and found that the large 430 gram containers (about 30 currently on hand) all list "Gluten Free and Organic" on the label. If you place a order soon for the 430g size, I am sure you will receive a gluten free container, but if it is a few weeks down the line, feel free to give us a call and we can double check the labels of those in the warehouse for this specification. Hope this helps! Jan 2, 2014

charis f: Wow that is scary. On a gluten free diet for serious health issues, not a fad diet for me. Barfing is no picnic. When I order I will call ahead so I don't waste another $20 bucks. Thanks Jan 8, 2014
Teri KStaff: I can absolutely understand your concern! Give us a call and we will double check for you and make a note in your order that we did so. If you were still to somehow end up with a non-gluten free labeled container, just let us know and we'll get you taken care of on this! Jan 8, 2014

Easy to use. Put into the grinder as you would with coffee beans and grind. Remove any residue dust and then run some coffee beans and then discard before you start to brew fresh coffee. Secret to great coffee is a clean grinder and a clean coffee maker and fresh beans.

I put my burr grinder to rest over 10 years ago because it was too hard to keep clean. I was told to use RICE, what a mess! So when I say Gail demonstrating this GRINDZ product, I thought "why not try it".
Well the outcome was more then I could have imagined. I no longer have the folks where I buy my beans grind them for me, but I do it myself every morning just as I am brewing my latte. What a difference in taste! Love this product, Thanks to Gail and her team! Bravo

Pros:
Easy To Use, Easy To Clean

Replacing Rice

My grinder paddles broke in less than a year so I was talking to the factory at Baratza about using rice to clean the grinder. They discouraged rice and said no brown rice. Finally they said Grindz is their only recommendation, but rice didn't void the warranty. Rice is cheaper, but Grindz seems much easier overall. Compared to the cost of coffee, what does cost of Grindz matter?

Pros:
Easy To Use, Commercial Grade

Just what you need to clean your grinder

Grindz is great cleaning product. I have started using this product about once a week to clean out the stale coffee flavor in the grinder. My only gripe about the product are the lousy instructions on the label. Looking online helped me figure out what I needed to do.

Basically, here are the steps: Place one cap-full of the Grindz pellets into your grinder. Change your grinder setting to somewhere in the middle range (which is about 20 on my Baratza grinder) and grind the pellets until they are completely ground. Throw out the ground up Grindz grounds and place one cap-full of coffee beans in the grinder to clean away any remaining Grindz residue. After that, clean out your Grinder catchbox so you don't leave any Grindz residue in there. Readjust your grinder to your desired setting and that's it ... Your Done!

Pros:
Easy To Use, Makes coffee taste better

Cons:
Poor Instructions
