Peter K: great coffee Nov 21, 2011
Ryan S: Velton Ross used to work on the sales floor at Seattle Coffee Gear, in fact he sold me a Rancilio Rocky grinder. Very friendly guy and I can't say enough about his roasts. By far the best roast I have had in the Seattle area. Nov 21, 2011
Patty G asked: Any suggestions for the grind? We use the Vario grinder and dual boiler Breville 920XL. We saw the reviews for this coffee and thought we would enjoy but can't seem to pull a good shot. Any suggestions? Feb 23, 2014

James M: Patty, it was a year ago last February that I bought some as they were out of my regular Lavazza Super Crema Gold and was advised this was a good choice. The flavor was much lighter blend and roast. I too had a hard time getting it dialed in but that is par for the course for me in small quanties. I was using a Preciso at the time and if I recall correctly it was set about a 2G. I did replace the burs on this shortly after and that sent me into the 3's for grinds. I now have a Forte Grinder and really like it but I hope the info helps Feb 24, 2014

amy s: This is my favorite coffee for my Rocket Cellini. I use the Rancilio grinder. I think you just have to play with the grind until you get it right. Start somewhere in the middle and keep getting finer until you get a good shot. It is not as oily as some beans so you shouldn't have clogging issues either. It is worth the effort! I will tell you that I started with the Breville and upgraded to the Rocket. The best appliance decision I have ever made! Feb 24, 2014

Mark F: I have used the max settings and worked backwards. So I am on setting 4 back from farthest left. Also suggest using a single shot hopper rather than twin shot it seems to be more intense on the flavor. If you notice at coffee house they only pull single shots at a time.....
Also you can try having it pre ground for espresso from Veltons and compare the grind. But my guess is try the single shot 1st.

Best

Bill T: Hmmm I have always pulled great shots with Velton's. My guide to the right grind is the amount of clumping. I find that about 25% of the grind should be in clumps. Essentially a fairly fine grind. I also don't press the tamper very hard since that will slow down the drip too much. Good luck and keep trying. This espresso blend is still the best I have tasted.

Keep trying - it will be well worth it.

Kari E: We grind it fairly fine. We have a Rancillo grinder and use the 8 setting. We have a quick mill Espresso machine. It took us a few days to figure out which setting would be best. Every once in a blue moon I buy a different coffee but I love the Veltons. If you are close the the SCG store, they can help you figure it out. Feb 24, 2014

Geoffrey H: We use this blend for espresso and its our favorite. We use a fine grind with Rancilio Rocky grinder and a Rocket Cellini machine. The grind is fine and we tamp reasonably hard. Usually makes a very nice cremora and great tasting espresso.

Good luck. Perhaps your grind needs to be finer and tamped firmer.

DONALD C: I wish I could help but I use a rancillio Rocky grinder and Silvia Espresso Machine. I grind the coffee at 5. Very fine, like course flour. I normally use Veltons Bonsais Blend, but I sometimes use Lavatza Super Crema when I run out. Feb 24, 2014

Kim Q: Sorry, I don't know for sure about an Aero Press coffee maker. I only know that we only use the Velton's Bonsai blend in our Saeco Xelsis. It is the only bean so far that gives us a huge crema with excellent coffee flavors of chocolate, which also displays a nutty and creamy flavor. Just delicious! I have never used an Aero Press. I would contact Velton's directly to ask about this coffee maker. Mar 3, 2014

Spencer M asked: Can anyone recommend the ideal extraction time, dose, and boiler temperature for the Bonsai Blend? I'm new to espresso, and I'd like to eliminate variables by nailing those settings down. Thanks! Nov 26, 2013
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
Mary B M: There are so many variables that go into extraction time, as mentioned above, that it's not a question of how much time it should take as much as what the brew looks like when coming out of the machine. It should be around 16 to 22 seconds, depending on ambient humidity, tamping, grind, and coffee type and machine pressure. When working at Peet's coffee in San Fran for 2 years, I learned the fine art of the perfect espresso does not come from watching a stop watch, but watching the variation in the color of the brew as it leaves the machine. Watch closely for the minute changes in the color of the crema as it leaves the machine. You can use the same machine, coffee, grind, tamp pressure, etc, and the extraction time will still vary based on humidity and age of the beans/grind. It is more an art than a science. If the crema suddenly drips out with a lighter color than the base crema, you've extracted too long. Watch closely and you can stop it before that happens. Dec 27, 2013
Reply to Mary B Good answer? Yes (1) No (0)
Teri KStaff: Unfortunately it is hard to recommend a universal setting that will work well across many machines for this Bonsai, as timing and extraction vary based on the grinder and machine you are using. You may also find that you prefer one setting, while someone else's tastes are very different! I'd suggest starting with a standard dosage, about 16 grams of coffee for a double shot, and an extraction time of 20-30 seconds for 2 ounces of liquid when you tamp with 30 pounds of pressure. Hopefully after some experimentation you will find results you're pleased with! Nov 27, 2013
Reply to Teri Good answer? Yes (1) No (0)
Geoffrey H: We think Velton's Bonsai blend makes one of the best espresso's possible. We use a Rancilo grinder set to 8/9 (pretty fine) and a Rocket Cellini machine. We typically make a double tamp- pressed slightly firm. Extraction time is about 18-22 sec for a double basket when pump pressure is up to 1 (ready to pump at this level- in the green).

Have to work your grind and time to be about 18-22 secs. Can tell by looking at the crema how you are doing.

Hopefully you will enjoy Velton's beans as much as we do.

Good Luck

A shopper asked: I received this Bonsai Blend as part of the Rancilio Silvia + Baratza Preciso package on May 17. It smells great, but I have not been able to extract anything but sour taste from this coffee. I even tried it with my old setup (a 1989 Salton EX-17, a steam machine with Mr. Coffee blade grinder): much less sour but still very little flavor.

I tried other beans with Rancilio and have had satisfactory results.

Seeing good reviews, I wonder if I got a bad batch of Bonsai Blend, or are there tips that will help me get decent coffee from this blend?
May 27, 2013
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
Teri KStaff: I am sorry you're not enjoying that Bonsai! Are you letting your Silvia heat up fully, with the portafilter attached? If the machine is not left to heat for a long enough time, or if the portafilter and brewhead are cold, then the temperature may be too low and therefore the shots can be sour. If you're using the PID, you may have to bump up the temperature a few degrees. If you don't have the PID, check out the video on temperature surfing and make sure with either option the portafilter is attached for heat up! Lastly, I would also mention that Velton's Bonsai is a blend that does have a touch of sour as part of it's flavor profile, and it just may not be a blend you enjoy, unfortunately! May 27, 2013

Shehab I asked: How old is the roast of the Velton's Bonsai when we buy it? Aug 30, 2012
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
Teri KStaff: We cycle through the Bonsai blend very quickly- it's popular- and receive a new shipment every Thursday that was roasted just one or two days prior. Then 3 weeks after the roast date, we consider it expired and throw out any that's left, but it's all generally sold! Aug 30, 2012

I do tend to consider price versus quality. While I am certain there may be better quality coffee available, after reviewing A LOT of internet reviews about coffee, given price versus quality, I will stick with Velton's, and with Seattle Coffee Gear! It is really smooth, with good flavor, and depending on how you pull your shots, a very subtle hint of chocolate is well hidden in this blend!

A light blend of beans

My notion of espresso beans was developed in the late 50's early 60's, so I'm really steeped in the tradition of a dark, rich, profound espresso that one associates with Naples, Italy. So, I wouldn't ever use this Bonsai Blend under any circumstance.

Without distinction

I cannot understand any positive review of this bean, at least not any that pertain to drip coffee. It lacks any distinction, quality, or flavor that I can review positively. It is initially weak, followed by a slightly stronger flavor which is indistinguishable from any coffee at 1/3 the price. It makes the coffee experience mundane, bland, and boring. It lacks any character or any strong notes of flavor.

It is a disappointment, especially given the quality and character of Velton's Twilight blend.

Stay away from this unexceptional bean.

Excellent light style espresso

I've never liked the smoky style espressos that are popular where I live. They work well enough in an overly sweet milk beverage, but are terrible in cappuccinos and regular lattes. Bonsai Blend is a lighter style roast, without the dark smoky flavor. I love how it blends with milk, and it produces excellent cappuccinos that accentuate the unique flavor of the steamed milk. In my opinion, it may be a bit too light for a flavored latte because it doesn't compete well with syrup. I don't drink espresso much, so I can't review it from that perspective. I think it's an excellent product, and a great value. Be aware that you won't always get the freshest bag, even if you order after Thursday. SCG seems to clear out the old stock first, so you may get a bag that's a couple weeks old every now and then, and I prefer mine fresher than that.

I received this as part of the lagniappe offered by SCG when I purchased a new espresso maker online. It shipped separately and arrived before my Breville Dual Boiler, so I tested it on my older machine, a PID modded Gaggia. I hit the right grind on my second shot. Bonsai showed very interesting waves of varying flavors: chocolate, malt, citrus, and some other kind of sweet fruit. All beautiful. The only unfortunate thing is that I made my order before Thanksgiving, so with the holiday break and the fact that I live completely across the country from WA, the beans arrived 14 days after their roasting. So I feel I'm seeing the tailing end of their potential. Oh well. I'll get some fresher beans later. One last thing -- the finish goes on forever. Great stuff.

When I first heard of Velton's Bonsai, I was intrigued by the reviews and decided to order a pound to test the waters. Upon arrival, and opening I caught a whiff of subtle chocolate and perhaps some caramel in the mix. The scents were wonderfully complexed, yet I could not help but notice how bright and soft the beans looked. Their texture was rather blond, in contrast to the usual dark brown from Peet's, my usual choice. Then came the time to taste, and I must admit, it was an interesting deviation from my usual darker and fuller taste. My only problem is that since I make more latte's than americanos, the complexity of the espresso gets lost in the milk (I use soy, that could be it also). However, if you're a shot drinker, or an americano lover, this might just be the coffee for you. It has a taste that you will enjoy, not too much, not too little...but...just right.

I was looking at this as a potential alternative to Lavazza Gold Selection. Given that I read comparisons to Starbucks espresso and glowing reviews on other sites I figured it would be worth a shot.

I found this coffee honestly to be rather uninteresting. It's OK... but it's not the same flavor profile as Starbucks Espresso (not by a long-shot) and Gold Selection had a bolder flavor.

I suppose it could be the machine I use but nothing appeared really have an significant change on the flavor when I drew the shot...

after reading the great review in a coffee review site i tried some - I have tried Espresso from a lot coffee house's and this one is the one for me -

Co-taster Byron Holcomb (94): "On the nose, I got inviting, complex floral and strawberry notes. The body was vivacious - I could have said round, sweet, with a little savory edge, comforting, but vivacious will do." Both Ken (94) and Byron found chocolate and malt in the flavor, with an assortment of additional descriptors that testify to the complexity of this blend: "cedar, butter" (Ken), "lemon bar, spice" (Byron). Both were impressed by the big, sweet, chocolaty bloom in milk, which Byron found was complicated by a continued, brightening hint of lemon zest. It appears that a very controlled, judicious use of cleanly fruity-fermented dry-processed coffees contributed to the round, sweet, complex richness of this versatile blend.

The very best thing about Velton's Bonzai is that it just tastes terrific! I have tried most every brand of coffee both here and abroad (as least so it seems) and Velton's is as good as any, better than most. I love it as "just a cup of coffee" or in my preferred drink, a double macchiato.

I have been sampling coffee beans for my home espresso for years and have had one true love with my local roasting company until I tasted this coffee. This coffee is smooth and taste great. It does have a bit of fruity flavor to it. My husband thought I added a syrup to his latte, but it was just the beans. Not a strong flavor just a smooth yummy coffee! I have to get more!!!!

One of my favorites

This is one of my absolute favorites. Best, most complex aroma of anything I've tasted. When you hit the brewing sweet-spot it is wonderful, with a tiny bit of citrus note on the top. It's a little finickier to really get dialed-in than some other coffees, but it's awesome when you hit it just right. Just be careful not to under-extract (i.e. grind too coarse, tamp too light, flow too fast, not enough coffee, etc.), because you will end up with sour swill.

Pros:
Complex balanced flavor, Best most complex aroma

Cons:
UGLY if underextracted, Narrow brewing sweetspot

A Great Espresso Blend

Velton's Bonsai Espresso Blend makes a great espresso drink. As others have said, there are hints of chocolate and a slight fruity flavor and aroma. I think it is one of the best espresso blends that I have tried. Unless your tastes lean toward an earthy flavor, this would be a great choice. My whole family likes this blend and we plan on buying it again.

Very nice to have an espresso blend that is more complex. It adds a hint of citrus to the expected chocolate notes. Having it shipped nearly two thousand miles in my case means it's not as fresh off the roast. That combined with the shipping cost means it won't become my everyday espresso.

Great Taste

I just bought a Rancilio Silvia, and have tried at least 5 or 6 top quality espresso blends, and the Bonsai is by far the best I have tasted. It is velvety, smooth, and loaded with thick crema. Even with my limited experience using the Rancilio, I manage to pull a great shot every time with this blend. I should also mention the shot finishes with a nice hint of spice. I am so surprised to find so many different distinct tastes within one cup of espresso. Just outstanding!

I would highly recommend this blend to anyone who enjoys espresso roasts.

I think I will buy many more bags in the future.

I bought a Rocky Rancillio grinder and SCG added free of charge Velton's Bonsai beans to try. I was immediately floored by the taste of these beans. Out of curiosity I started experimenting with other beans roasted in the NYC area, but not for long. These beans are fantastic, very smooth and full of taste. I ordered four more bags. A little tip for the people that like a poured coffee: put the rocky on 40, a quarter cup of the Velton's beans will due, 9 ounces of water, pour a little, let it sit for 10 seconds until the grind blooms, then slowly pour the rest. So great...when I am on the road I have serious withdrawal symptoms. Need to get a travel kit.

I have gone through 10s of different espresso beans for my Breville espresso maker and the Bonsai blend makes the best espresso. The texture is rich and creamy and the creme is the thickest I have ever seen. The taste is chocolaty and intense with a pleasant base and some hint of spices.

I just recently spoiled myself with a Jura Capresso C9 and (at the reccommendation of the brew crew) ordered the Velton's Bonsai Espresso Blend. This coffee is amazing. The only downside to this coffee is getting and keeping it super fresh; I have to order in bulk or wait a LONG time on the APO/FPO system. This is my absolute favorite for espresso and other coffee drinks (hot and cold). The best part is the fact that this coffee doesn't gunk up your machine or grinder like other chain coffee's do.

Great Taste, Not oily

I received a pound of this free as part of the package I purchased. I initially thought they were simply promoting a local roaster. I could not have been more wrong.
This blend is outstanding! Watch the Kat and Gail YouTube video about Velton's roasting process. You will see the small batch processing and care taken in the roasting.
I have already purchased more. This blend has replaced my former fave as my espresso roast of choice.
I also had the pleasure of meeting Velton at SCG. He is a great individual and deserves our support.
