Eureka Oro Mignon XL Review

Eureka’s Mignon lineup has been a cherished part of the Seattle Coffee Gear catalog for some time now. These are grinders that offer high performance grinding in a tight package perfect for any countertop. From the Mignon Notte all the way up to the flash Specialita, we love this whole lineup of grinders. Today we’re taking a look a the newest grinder in the family, the Oro Mignon XL!

What does the Oro mean?

Oro is Eureka’s new premium line of products, and the Mignon XL is the first product in the line. It’s still a Mignon, with many of the same design elements that make the other Mignons incredible grinders for their pricing. The Mignon XL just represents the next step up from other Mignons, and the Oro branding clarifies that it’s a bit more premium than similar products in Eureka’s catalog. And no, it’s not a bigger grinder! The XL refers to the size of the burrs primarily. With large, commercially sourced 65mm flat steel burrs, this grinder makes quick work of coffee beans. The burrs and beefed up motor are actually closer to what you’ll find in Eureka’s Atom line of grinders. Atoms blur the line between commercial and home use grinders, being used in very high-end home setups and cafes around the world. The Mignon XL takes that peak performance and puts it into the more compact case of other Mignon grinders!

Workflow and Noise

This grinder features the same responsive and hyper accurate LCD touch screen timer as found on the Specialita. This timer gives you single and double shot settings, which you can use for any two different timings you might need. Given its accuracy, this timer is highly reliable for reproducing the same grind over and over, cutting down on wasted coffee and time to prepare your drinks. It also uses the same portafilter fork and push button designs as the specialita, making actually using the grinder a breeze. The burrs are adjusted with a stepless adjustment wheel. This can take some time to get the hang of if you’re new to stepless grinders. Essentially, this wheel works like a screw, bringing the burrs together and pushing them apart without any “clicks” or steps. It means you can get incredibly precise with your grind. The hopper can hold 12 oz. of beans, but is also low enough to fit easily under cabinets. With many specialty roasters offering 12 oz. bags specifically, we find this totally workable. Noise levels were comparable to a Specialita. In other words, it’s one of the quietest grinders you can get! Finally, the Oro Mignon XL is built by hand in Milan, Italy, so you know it’s built to last. We’re big fans of the Oro Mignon XL and we cannot wait to see what Eureka does next with this premium line of equipment. If you’re in the market for a fast, quie, and high quality home espresso grinder we can’t recommend the Eureka Oro Mignon XL highly enough.
