Cleaning and maintaining your superautomatic espresso machine is the number one way to get as much use and life out of it as possible. While maintenance is pretty straightforward for these machines, Jura machines in particular require a little extra love to keep them brewing the coffee you love, and we're here to help!
Daily Maintenance
First of all, keeping things dry is a key part of machine maintenance. You'll want to empty the drip tray and waste bins every day to prevent any mold build up, and Jura even recommends emptying the water tank between uses to ensure that you're using fresh water each day when you make your morning cup of coffee.
They also recommend leaving the drip tray slightly open when not in use to help it dry out and stay dry. Mold buildup is bad for your coffee and bad for your machine, and these tips will help to prevent that.
Keep in mind that these and all other cleaning steps should be done with the machine on, as it will sense that you're emptying the waste bin and the drip tray. Keep in mind that you do actually need to do these things because there's no way for the machine to know that you emptied the tray, so just removing and reinserting the tray without emptying it to clear the warning will result in an overflowing tray and a big mess!
Cleaning Cycles
The most important cleaning cycle is the milk cycle. To do this, you'll just need the cleaning carafe and some Jura milk cleaner. On some machines you'll need to set up the carafe differently, but on the Z10 you can just use the dosing button on the milk cleaner bottle to add cleaner to the carafe. Be sure to check your manual for proper set up instructions.
Once you have the cleaning carafe prepared, connected, and in place you can use the menu button and navigation buttons to initiate cleaning. Some machines do require intervention mid-cycle, but on the Z10 you can "set it and forget it" and let it handle the rest of the cleaning process.
The next cleaning cycle is just called the "cleaning cycle." This uses Jura's cleaning tablets, and is initiated with the carafe set up in the same position. You can select "clean" from the menu and then follow the cleaning steps, generally just dropping a cleaning tablet into the bypass doser. From there, the machine will handle the process.
Finally, there's descaling. This process is very similar to the cleaning cycle, but uses Jura's descaling tablets instead of the cleaning tablets. We know it can be a pain to stay stocked up on manufacturer specific cleaning supplies, but Jura's tablets and cleaners are specially formulated for their machines, so it really is important for maintaining the life of your superauto.
