Superautomatic Espresso Machines for Espresso Only

Most superautomatic espresso machines offer extensive milk steaming options to create lattes and cappuccinos. However, many espresso enthusiasts just want a great shot to sip on, rather than a whole milk drink. We’ve got a couple of options for anyone seeking a shot without a bunch of extra milk steaming fluff!

Philips Baristina

The Philips Baristina is a fantastic no-frills automatic espresso machine. It has a nice, small footprint, and even resembles a semi-automatic machine in appearance. What we love about this machine is its ultra-simple design and options. Simply add your beans, order your drink, slide your portafilter over to the grinder side, then the machine does all of the rest.

The Baristina’s pressurized portafilter means you don’t need to spend a lot of time dialing in beans, and it offers extremely fast brew times. We’ve seen this machine go from off to finishing up your shot in under a minute. The Baristina does all of this with just a single button press, and even keeps programming to just shot length and an “intensity boost” feature for a stronger shot.

This is a great option for any user looking to upgrade to a pod machine who doesn’t need any sort of milk frothing or additional programming.

Jura E4

The Jura E4 may be a big jump in price from the Baristina, but it justifies this with the brand’s patented Pulse Extraction Process. This process pulses water through the coffee grounds, giving you a shot that tastes much more like a hand-pulled shot from a semi-automatic espresso machine. This means that while the E4 is a much larger and more expensive machine than the Baristina, you’re also getting an even higher quality shot to enjoy.

The Jura E4 does maintain much of the simplicity of the Baristina, with very little required to get brewing. You simply add your beans to the hopper, select your coffee amount, your drink size, and then press go. Shortly thereafter you’ll get a fantastic shot that will rival what you could have accomplished on a more hands-on machine.

The E4 does also offer a bypass doser, which is great for those who like decaf at times. Simple pour espresso ground coffee and select the bypass option and you’ll get a delicious cup of a different bean.

Both of these machines offer some really excellent coffee. If you want to jump in at the high end and get one of the best superautomatic shots around, the Jura E4 might be the machine for you. If instead you are looking for a simple upgrade from a pod espresso machine that won’t break the bank, the Philips Baristina is an excellent choice.

Let us know what you think of these machines in the comments, and see both of them in action in our video below!
