Is it a boy? Is it a girl? No, it's a brewer! The long awaited younger sibling of the Bonavita 8-cup coffee maker has arrived in the form of a 5-cup! Featuring everything we love about the 8-cup, but in a compact size, the Bonavite 5-Cup Coffee Maker with Stainless Steel Carafe features a cross-shaped shower head for maximum saturation and the widely sought after pre-infusion mode. Want to savor every toasty sip? Brew directly into the stainless steel carafe and twist on the pour-through lid for maximum heat retention.

Features and Functionality

  • Cross-Shaped Shower Head: The specifically designed shape works well for optimal extraction in petite batches.
  • #4 Cone Shaped Filter Basket: Features a standard sized cone shaped filter basket, so you'll never be without filters.
  • Pre-Infusion Mode: For optimal flavor, choose the pre-infusion mode to allow degassing before brewing.
  • Hefty Carafe: It may be small, but it can hold its own! The well built 5-cup thermal carafe will keep your coffee warm while you enjoy your current cup. Twist on the pour-through lid for maximum heat retention.
  • BPA Free - Proud to be toxic free, all plastic parts on this brewer are BPA free.
  • Optimal Brew Temperature - Much like it's 8-cup predecessor, this petite coffee maker maintains a precise and ideal temperature range of 195° - 205°F while brewing.
  • Still Keeping it Simple - This 5-cup coffee maker stays true to its lineage by sticking to the basics and not offering any programmable options. Sometimes simpler is better.
How Does it Compare?

Besides the overall size difference, the 5-cup offers a cone shaped filter basket, while the larger 8-cup version offers a U-shaped filter basket.

What is the heating element made of? I know the technivorm is all copper, and the new model Capresso's are stainless steel lined. Any info you have about Bonavita would be helpful!

2 questions: How long does it take to brew a pot, and how's the performance for brewing a half-pot (i.e., one large cup)?
Another shopper on Apr 8, 2015
Best Answer: I have only brewed a full pot a handful of times, I typically brew just one big cup which is pretty much half a pot. It takes about 5 minutes but add on the time it takes to first run the steel carafe under hot water so you get a hot cup, and also the time it takes to screw on the spouted top to pour the coffee and it's a bit of a process. Screwing on a lid obviously doesn't take long but it really irks me and is what I consider to be a huge downfall of the maker. Why can't there be a proper spout on the carafe for it to pour properly without a lid?? You have to put on the lid of you want to use the carafe to fill the reserve with water, take it
Off to brew the coffee and then put it back on again to pour the coffee. Ridiculous, and all for a just OK cup
of coffee. I read all these great reviews for the maker but I highly disagree, I'm pretty unsatisfied with it.

Can u use clean after to clean the carafe or something's sort of brownish inside?
A shopper on Jul 18, 2016
Best Answer: Let me star with I do not know what "clean after" is, But if I understand your question then here is what I have found. When the carafe started to look brown inside I put about 1 to 1.5 tsp of Urnex Cafiza in the back of the coffee maker and added 25 oz (or .8Liter) of water, make sure that the Cafiza is dissolved then turn on the coffee maker and let it run until it shuts off on its own. Let the hot water with the cafiza sit in the carafe for about 20 minuets then pour the water out and put fresh water in the back of the coffee maker and run to rinse any cafiza out of the coffee maker or carafe if not all of the brown has come out of the carafe after the first rinse repeat cleaning and rinse and check again.

Is the stainless steel carafe glass lined? If not, is there an ss glass lined carafe that would fit this machine?
V L on Mar 21, 2016
Best Answer: No, the stainless steel carafe is not glass lined - it is stainless steel and holds the heat very well for about an hour. Note: Most stainless steel coffee carafes are not as (thermal) good as their respective brands claim to be.

The answer to your question about a "stainless steel glass-lined carafe fitting the machine" is I don't know. I don't think Bonavita offers a carafe as such, but it would be really nice if they did. If another company offered one, it would have to be made specifically for this particular machine due to its brewing design.

If you are thinking about purchasing this machine, I must tell you that it makes really hot coffee and the machine's design is quite simple to use, clean, and has a small "footprint." The only quirk with this machine is its carafe. It will drip from the lid when pouring, unless you release the steam buildup by simply pushing the pouring release a couple of times before pouring. Once you get this figured out - it is a great machine. Best to you in your search.

Some customers have complained about the carafe not pouring properly, have they made any attempts to perfecting this issue?
A shopper on Sep 29, 2017
Best Answer: You pretty much have to put the lid on the carafe to pour, and ~an ounce or two of coffee gets 'trapped' and can't be poured out. I much prefer the double-wall glass carafe, here:

I push the on button and it won't stay on?
Lorna S on Aug 11, 2016
Best Answer: The switch on this machine doesn't actually move positions. When you turn the machine on, you push the button and a red light should come on while the button returns to originally position. If you hold the button for several seconds it will switch back and forth between pre-infusion mode, the light will flash for a couple seconds and the machine will turn off. Not sure if this helps explain your issue but hopefully it does. Good luck!

Will a Chemex 6 cup with a Kone filter fit under this machine?
Eugenie C on Nov 29, 2015
Best Answer: Unfortunately the Chemex is too tall to fit under this machine. You can take a look at Chemed's website and check out the Ottomatic.

Can I make a good latte from this drip machine plus a milk frothier?
A shopper on Nov 3, 2015
Best Answer: Not really. Lattes are made with espresso and frothed milk. This machine makes drip coffee so while you can certainly put frothed milk in it, it won't be a true latte.

I have a couple questions about this. First, I have the original Bonavita and it is recommended to brew a full 8 cups in order to get proper extraction (although i usually brew 6 cups anyway and it seems fine). I like the idea of brewing 4-5 cups in the smaller machine but is this machine actually doing anything differently in order to get better brew from a smaller batch? Second, in the NEW Bonavita they have moved to a flat bottomed basket so isn't this smaller one going back to the cone like taking a step backwards?
Ken T on Jun 23, 2015
Best Answer: The difference in size is just that, size. Brewing the smaller amount will not yield better coffee than the 8 cup maker. There is no detriment to having a flat basket over a cone basket in a home machine like the Bonavita. I will say, some people think a cone shape helps produce stronger coffee since it is all concentrated at the tip, but on a Bonavita, because of all the holes that the water sprays through, it's doubtful you'll notice a difference.

Requires the use of filters?
A shopper on Apr 10, 2015
Best Answer: Yes. When brewing, it uses a #4 cone shaped filters. You can choose to use paper filters or a gold tone filter that's reusable.

A great machine!Review by Trickdog
We've had the Bonavita for over a year now, used daily, and it is a pleasure to own.
Coffee is consistent to the point where varying the grind slightly produces big changes in the flavor profile. The carafe is NOT defective. The last few drops get caught on an internal ledge near the mouth and won't pour if you don't completely invert the carafe. A dribble often ends up on the table top. No big deal. The carafe keeps the brew piping hot, as long as you need it to. We make four (5 oz.) cups for two, two cups for one. Pre-soak definitely. Enjoy. (Posted on 4/13/2017)
Makes great coffee but carafe is defective and design poorReview by smb
I love coffee and have been making pour over for years. Decided it would be nice and speed up my morning routine if I purchased a coffee maker. Decided on the Bonavita based on the reviews and the staff recommendation.

If the carafe had a better design and was not defective I would give this 5-stars for quality based on the coffee it brews alone. I think the value is good given how expensive the moccamaster is. But I think Bonavita has an issue with the design and quality control of the carafe.

Pro: Makes great coffee, quick and easy to use.
Cons: Stainless Carafe design is poor and quality not great.
1) You cannot pour coffee out without putting the lid on, it goes everywhere. I typically fill a cup then the thermos I take to work. I have no need most days to keep coffee in the carafe so this is just an extra step. There is also a lip inside that makes it difficult to pour out all the coffee.
2) Even pre-warming the carafe the coffee cools off in it quite quickly. Less than an hour.
3) The carafe I received quickly developed a defect. After about 4 uses a crack developed in the carafe lining about 1/2 inch from the bottom. It goes all the way around. In a couple of spots more cracks are splaying off and a discoloration has developed. It looks like the lining is going to peel off. I am contacting Bonavita warranty repair for a replacement carafe.
4) The carafe just seems cheap and not all that well made for the price of the unit. (Posted on 1/18/2016)
good pickReview by joanne
i'm so glad i purchased this product as recommended by the seattle coffee gear company. i was debating on whether to buy the technivorm or bonavita. i bought the bonavita because i was told its great for one person coffee drinker. the price was better including with other companies that sold the product. i'm happy with my purchase. hot, tasty coffee. one mug makerReview by steve
My only complaint is the carafe will not completely pour out with or without lid.
You have to shake upside down or insert a towel to get last of fluid out of the carafe.
I suspect a redesign in the works. (Posted on 12/13/2015)
A good reason to get out of bedReview by Lumpy Waters
I've never enjoyed the flavor of automatic-drip coffee as much as I do now. The price for this coffee maker was a little bit more than I initially wanted to spend, but it is worth every penny. Love the insulated carafe. Capacity is just right for a daily driver, could be a bit small for entertaining but I've never had to serve coffee to more than two guests in addition to myself. Good valueReview by Drip Guy
Coffee is hot and tasty. The pot keeps it hot for long time. Just the right size for single person or couple with mixed schedule.

Only issue was when we cleaned it we didn't let it cool enough and it would empty the water. After it cooled it worked perfectly. (Posted on 9/10/2015)
Great BrewerReview by Paul
This little guy makes some of the best home brewed coffee that I've ever made. It brews enough coffee to enjoy a standard mug of coffee before I leave the house and then to fill my 16oz travel mug on my way out the house. It's a great replacement for my single serve brewer and makes far superior coffee. The operation is simple, no bells and whistles. Add the coffee, add the water, and hit the brew button. I always use the pre-infusion mode. I get a smooth, tasty, hot cup of coffee every time. If you're looking to serve more than 1 or 2 people I'd get the larger version, but for me in the morning, it works out perfect. (Posted on 8/19/2015)
