Compact and capable, the Ascaso I-Mini I1 offers high quality grinds in an adorable footprint. Equipped with 54mm flat steel burrs and a stepless worm-dial adjust, the simple, uncluttered design ensures easy operation for the home barista. And with a sturdy aluminum build and petite proportions, the I-mini will look great on any kitchen counter.

Features and Functionality

  • 54mm Flat Burrs - Hardened steel burrs and a solid brass burr holder offer consistent grinds from pour over to espresso fineness.
  • Stepless Grind Adjust - A stepless grinder adjustment thumb dial offers near-infinite settings, making the I-mini particularly well-suited for dialing-in espresso shots.
  • Small Proportions - Measuring in at a compact 4.75 inches wide and 13 inches tall, the I-Mini lives up to its namesake.
  • Aluminum Case - Sturdy aluminum casing, available in textured black or polished finishes, is sure to withstand the rigors of a busy kitchen.
  • Affordable - Stepless adjustments, 54mm flat burrs and a solid metal case are features not easily found at this price point.
  • Teeny Tiny - This pint-sized bean pulverizer makes a perfect small-space match with the Dream Up or the Basic.
  • Stepless - Our test unit came in nearly perfectly dialed-in out of the box (always a nice surprise), and while the adjustment knob was a little tight, adjustments were easy and we saw no grind drift.
  • Aluminum Case - The solid aluminum case gives the grinder a reassuring weight and feel when in use.
  • Basic - The I-mini offers few of the features we've grown accustomed to in more expensive grinders. The hopper has no bean gate for easy cleaning, and there is no continuous mode or timed dose functionality either.
  • Clumpy - Small clumps are noticeable at the fine end of the espresso range, and tend to disperse in slow bursts from the grounds chute.
SCG Staff Says...

The I-Mini comes in two versions, the I1 and I2. The I1 sports a 54mm flat burr with a solid brass burr holder, while the cheaper I2 has a plastic burr holder with small 38mm conical burrs. We've had much better experience with the larger, flat burrset for espresso.

How Does it Compare?

The grind quality of the I-mini for espresso is peerless in its price range. The next great grinder near this price point is the Rocky, which has a clunky stepped adjustment collar.

What is the difference between new Ascaso Mini I-1 and regular I-1? Looks like burrs are the same, same motor... Just a size of the hopper? Thanks
A shopper on Mar 30, 2017
Best Answer: The I-mini is just that, an I-1 in a smaller form factor! The case of the i-mini is a good 1.5 inches narrower, ~3.5 inches shorter, and ~1.5 inches less deep than the regular i-1. It also has a different portofilter holder style and spout.

How is this machine different from the Rocky, for daily espresso-ground beans? Everyone says the Rocky is built like a tank, and good build quality is important, but I'd rather have something smaller, so I'm wondering about getting the Ascaso instead. Will it measure up?

Best Answer: I prefer the stepless dial on the I-mini to the stepped adjustment of the Rocky, you can get much closer to ideal grind size this way. That said, the smaller size of the I-mini means it has a slower motor and a smaller bean hopper.

Do you plan on using the grinder for anything other than espresso? If so, I'd recommend the Rocky, as its MUCH easier to make big adjustments on than the I-mini.

Hope this helps!

Hello, and thanks for all the great videos! On Ascaso's site, they show an 'optional' electronic timer for the Mini. Is that something I would be able to get from you if I were to purchase an i1? It seems like a useful addition to me: some doser-like functionality without a doser.
Chuck on Mar 15, 2017
Best Answer: Unfortunately no! The timer-based option need to be installed at the factory with a slightly different case to accommodate controls. We don't have timed versions available yet.

Hope this helps!

Tough AdjustmentReview by Barry
First, let me say that I now realize that I did not need a stepless grinder to suit my taste. My palate is simply not that refined. However, I could have lived with it if the grind adjustment knob (to worm drive) was not so difficult to turn. I mean it was a serious and awkward effort to rotate it. I spent so much time dialing it in that I developed a blister on the inside of my thumb from all the extra firm twisting. That was a deal breaker, so I returned it. BTW, the grind of the coffee was awesome! (Posted on 6/6/2017)

Great espresso grinder, took a few shots (5-6) before I got Grind correct but it is working perfectly now, little bit clumpy but not bad, only real problem is coffee grounds left in chute. Great bang for your buck if all you need is espresso
. Settings are nice and simple (Posted on 3/21/2017)
Great grinder but very messy/wastes coffeeReview by Dave
This does a great job grinding coffee; with that aspect I am very happy. BUT, I do not like that the only option is to dispense coffee directly into the portafilter. In fact, it tends to spew coffee off to the side a bit such that about 10% of the ground coffee ends up on my counter. This is sufficiently wasteful and vexing that it may be a deal breaker. A better design in this area would make this a top-notch grinder (Posted on 3/18/2017)
