Rocket Espresso FAST Review

Rocket Espresso's Mozzafiato and Giotto machines have a longstanding tradition of delivering Italian excellence with every shot. Last year, Rocket launched bold new models in these lines that they're calling FAST machines. How do they hold up, and were they worth the wait?

Machine Differences

The Giotto and Mozzafiato are functionally the same internally, with very similar performance and capabilities. The only noticeable difference in these two machines is in their appearance. In this instance, we think both look great, with the new furniture and design elements of the FAST models bringing a welcome update to the older, more traditional Mozzi and Giotto. These updates may be a turnoff for those who prefer a more classic design, but we feel they help put a fresh spin on a longstanding look.

The Mozzafiato is a simpler look, with flat angles and a utilitarian design. While the cutouts on top of the side panels may look like handles they are definitely not, but they do provide some flair to an otherwise simple design. The side and back panels are available in black or chrome, so you can get that fully chromed appearance if you desire. Both models feature the Rocket logo on the bag in the inverse color of the panels.

The Giotto, on the other hand, offers a much more bold visual design. The side panels have an angled look that lends itself well to the FAST moniker, evoking racing machines and aerospace. Beyond this, the raised edges around the cup warmer give this model an extra bit of visual interest. Like the Mozzi, the Giotto is available with chrome or black panels.

Performance and Quality

Both FAST models offer considerable updates to the older Rockets in terms of functionality. The FAST name is a reference to the quick heat up time that both machine offer, as they can go from cold to brew temp in 12 minutes. This is considerably faster than most heat exchanger competitors.

As for stability, both machines have PID controlled temperatures that give them rock solid temp performance. We have found that they consistently produce quality shots, and are a great example of a hobbyist machine. While you will have to manage the brew process without extensive automation, you will also find that the machine won't be in the way of you and an exceptional shot of espresso.

One of the biggest updates these machines have received comes in the form of their integrated displays and controls. By removing the drip tray you can access buttons to manage the PID programming, eco mode settings, and other machine elements. The display doubles as a shot timer when pulling shots. Both machines also feature pressure gauges at the boiler and the grouphead, which make it easy to diagnose any issues with your shots.

Finally, both FAST models are available with vibratory or rotary pumps (Giotto R, and Mozzafiato R, respectively). The rotary models are a bit more expensive but can be plumbed in thanks to commercial style pumps that can handle the pressure from a water line. This flexibility is not a given even at this price point, so we really appreciate it here.

Are these Machines Right for Me?

The Rocket Espresso Mozzafiato and Giotto FAST espresso machines are both excellent premium heat exchanger options. These machines are perfect for the home barista that wants a hands-on, manual approach to their brewing with a focus on quality and machine longevity over programming or technological bells and whistles. The updates to the Mozzi and Giotto are great here, so if you've been eyeing a Rocket Espresso machine now may be the right time to add one to your countertop.
