Why did you choose this?
Seattle Coffee Gear Store
Recommended by Gail and this does a great job of cleaning out the machine from the extra oil of the beans. I recommend buying some "cheap" beans to use AFTER you run Grindz through to clear the path of the extra chalk.

Does anyone know what this stuff is made out of? It says food safe and natural but a lot of manufacturers of products say that these days. Just wondering because after all you do probably end up drinking some it.
Brent S on Jan 1, 2014
Best Answer: Brent, I quote from the container: "Every ingredient is edible and either used to bake bread, prepare your favorite breakfast, or in the case of the food-safe binder a key ingredient in toothpaste." From the EU disclosure document, ingredients are listed as: "Proprietary mixture of cereals and grains with food grade binders."

Judging from inexpert physical inspection, the product looks like organic material with something to bind the ingredients together.

You are right, though, that, after cleaning,a couple of tiny white specks continue to show up for one or two grinds no matter the thoroughness of getting the cleaner out of the grinder. They don't alter the taste and, so far, they don't seem to have affected me.

We have the Breville Smart Grinder, which grind setting would I set it to when using the Grindz?
Dawna on Aug 8, 2012
Best Answer: I have a different grinder but I do use Grindz to help keep it clean. Use the same setting you would use for French Press (coarse) - the opposite setting you would use for espresso.

Does this work better than instant rice? If so, how?
A shopper on Jan 31, 2015
Best Answer: Yes, this is a better solution than rice. Some rice can be too hard and can actually cause damage if ground through a grinder. This is intended to break apart, and because it can become a powdery consistency, will absorb some of those oils a bit faster as it passes through your grinder. Just keep in mind that there's still a more intensive cleaning that you'll still need to do with your grinder by taking apart the burrs, and while it's less frequent than using Grindz, you'll never be able to completely avoid that heavy duty cleaning! :-)

Can I use this with the built-in grinder on the Breville Barista Express BES870XL? I also have a Breville Smart Grinder and I know I can use it on that at a course grind, but the Barista Express only does fine grind.
RayNo on Aug 28, 2013
Best Answer: It is perfectly safe to use Grindz on the Breville Barista Express because remove and discard the Grindz product after it has ground through the unit. However, you wouldn't want to use it in a superautomatic machine where water would come into contact with the Grindz after it has been ground. You can use the Grindz on either a course or a fine grind setting.

We own an Ascaso Mini grinder. Is it safe to use Grindz? And if so, do you recommend adjusting the grind setting in any way?
Edward K on Apr 22, 2012
Best Answer: Yes, it's safe. Take the grind setting up really coarse prior to running them through.

NEVER EVER USE THIS IN A SUPERAUTOMATIC ESPRESSO MACHINE!!!!

It's fine for a stand-alone burr grinder but it will permanently damage a superautomatic. (Posted on 12/5/2014)

I have a 20 year old Rancilio Rocky grinder that's never been cleaned, and the dial that lets you adjust the grind setting has been immobile for years. I got some Grindz, recommended by sales guy Matt, and it freed up the adjustment dial so I could get the coffee beans ground to a finer setting for the new espresso machine I just got.

Now, I am going to take the Rocky apart and see if I can clean out all the junk that's been accumulating in there since the last century. (Posted on 9/10/2014)

Great product! Unless you have celiac as it does contain wheat. I unintentionally made a customer of mine very ill as she has severe Celiac's disease. I felt terrible. I do not recommend this in a cafe setting for this reason. (Posted on 2/13/2014)

Grindz seems to have been around as long as I've been grinding my own coffee, a good many years now. It seems to do what it is supposed to do, just fine. To be sure I don't know of any competing products, though they may well exist. I will continue to use it. (Posted on 5/1/2013)

I have a newish grinder so I honestly couldn't tell you if this stuff works to seriously clean an old grinder, removes oils, etc. I did have trouble getting it back out of the machine -- there were light-colored grinds still coming out of the spout even after I ground some sacrificial beans, and even three or four espresso shots later. Fortunately it is edible, and I haven't noticed an off taste. (Posted on 3/24/2013)

I tried rice in one of my grinders for cleaning and it was too tough, it got caught in the gear and bent the plastic ring holding the burr in place. The Grindz cleaner flows through better and has a degreaser ingredient for the old oils. Now I will never treat my grinder to anything less.
