We like a coffee maker with brains! Arriving on the scene as a newly certified SCAA brewer, the OXO Barista Brain 9-Cup Coffee Brewer is, as the name implies, one intelligent drip coffee maker!

Evenly dispersing the optimally heated water for full grounds saturation, you can brew between two to nine perfect cups of liquid gold, *ahem* we mean caffeine.

Features and Functionality

  • SCAA Certified - Brewing at the perfect temperature (197.6 degrees F - 204.8 degrees F), this coffee maker bears the SCAA stamp of approval.
  • Easy Peasy - A small LED display and dial/button help you quickly and easily start the brewing process.
  • Removable Mixing Tube - An silicone mixing tube blends the coffee throughout the carafe as it brews, so each cup is as tasty as the last.
  • Pause and Pour - Removing the carafe during the brewing process triggers a pause, allowing you to pour a cup without a mess. Replace the carafe within 60 seconds to resume brewing.
  • Wake-Up Timer - Set a time and this drip brewer will automatically start the cycle, so your brew is ready when you are!
  • Freshness Countdown - When the brew cycle is complete, a timer will count up the minutes (up to sixty) since the end of the cycle, so you know how fresh your cup o' coffee will be.
  • Singing Hot, Hot Hot - As an SCAA certified brewer, the Barista Brain brews at the optimal temperature.
How Does it Compare?

The OXO On Barista Brain 9-Cup is comparable in volume and certification status to the Bonavita brewer or the Technivorm Moccamaster brewers. However, its interface and programmability make it stand out from the crowd.

Let us break it down for you: Although 8 ounces equals a cup in the baking world, a US cup of coffee is measured at 6 ounces and a European cup of coffee is measured at 4.25 ounces. This is why we sometimes list ounces to paint a more accurate picture of capacity.

So is this better than the bonavita machine taste wise, holding temp. in the carafe, and one concern does it take to long to brew? Any word on reliability so far. I need a new machine like yesterday. Im willing to buy a technivorm but prefer to be able to turn it on and walk away and not babysit the machine while brewing.

My understanding is that the OXO 12-Cup machine allows for temperature control of the water for brewing - a handy feature if you live at elevation. Does the 9-cup machine have the same feature?

Is your height measurement of 15.5 accurate? Other websites list height at 17.2. Our cabinets have 16" clearance so height is important

I've been researching coffee makers for several weeks and I keep coming back to the Oxo 9 cup. My only concern is over reliability. When I think of Oxo, I think of cheap kitchen utensils from Target. Do they have a history of making good coffee makers? Any reason to think this coffee maker won't hold up over time? Thanks for your thoughts!
Jeremy A on Mar 13, 2016
Best Answer: You know what Jeremy, I don't like things 'out' in my kitchen. I like things tidy & uncluttered, but my OXO 9 cup is on my kitchen counter, because it's convenient & I don't find it unappealing to look at - that's saying something. I wanted something that would work like my Chemex, but would do it FOR me. That's why I chose this one. I have been very happy with how it operates & I DO expect it'll hold up over time. Happy with my purchase.

What filters do you recommend for the Oxo On 9-Cup Coffee Maker?

Best Answer: I use Melitta #4 White Filters. I tried the brown filters, but felt they imparted a flavor.

I have a question for anyone who has tried the new OXO On 9-Cup Coffee Maker, I wanted to ask about the carafe. Is the opening large enough to get your hand in there for cleaning? Also, the Bonavita carafe has a weird lip on the inside that makes it very difficult to get all of the coffee out of the pot, does the oxo carafe have a smooth interior or does it also have this irritating lip?
Stephanie R on May 11, 2016
Best Answer: You won't get your hand inside the pot. As for a lip? Not much. The interior is smooth. Only a small amount of coffee gets left in the pot. I usually soak my stainless pots weekly with OxiClean, and they comeback almost odorless and bright and shiny.

great coffee butReview by GR
Great flavor, easy to use and I would love it if I drank my coffee within one hour as that is how long the carafe keeps it warm. I need my coffee hot after two hours (Posted on 10/30/2016)
Consistently great coffee!Review by Robert
After beginning research and deciding to seek my first-time purchase of an SCAA-certified coffee maker, I came across Seattle Coffee Gear's reviews and Gail helped to convince me that the Oxo On 9 was my choice. It also convinced me to purchase from Seattle Coffee Gear, a real bricks and mortar store (even though I live in the Midwest), and their service has been great.

The Oxo On 9 has been consistently quick, simple and easy to use. It is very quiet and makes perfectly-hot, excellent brews. The glass water reservoir makes measurements easy, and guests are entertained to watch the pulsed-brewing process! The carafe pours nicely and keeps the contents hot for at least as long as advertised. Cleaning the whole unit is very easy, although you may have to look twice at the shower head to notice the imprinted "lock/twist to unlock" symbol (which has worked perfectly).

The appearance of the brewer is very attractive, and it is well-constructed (even the cord)- there are no loose fittings or flimsy plastic parts. I sometimes pre-warm the carafe with hot water, but usually we drink everything before it has any chance to cool, so this may not be necessary. When brewing larger volumes you should be aware that even though the 'countdown' timer has started, some of the brew may still be moving through the cone into the carafe. I've had no real issues with dripping. Being groggy without coffee yet in the mornings, I have also come to appreciate (more than once) that this was designed with a symbol that glows red and it will not allow you to start brewing if the carafe is not in place.

I have now used the brewer at least daily for 3+ months with no regrets. I would definitely recommend it to others.

Great coffee, every day!Review by Bob
This is my first purchase of an SCAA-certified coffee maker. After reading a number a reviews and watching videos, it was Gail's video on Seattle Coffee Gear that helped persuade me to purchase this machine (and to get it from a bricks and mortar store). I've had the Oxo On Barista Brain 9-cup brewer for almost 3 months, use it at least once daily, and I have no regrets about the purchase.

The Oxo 9 consistently makes great coffee. The carafe pours nicely and keeps the coffee hot. I've not experienced any issues with dripping. The machine is beautifully and sturdily designed. Brewing is very quiet. The glass water reservoir makes measurements extremely easy, plus it is entertaining for guests to watch the pulsed brewing process. Cleaning the coffee maker is quick and easy (e.g., look for the imprinted lock symbol on the shower head to easily twist it off or on).

Overall, I'm very happy with the Oxo, it is quick and convenient for making great coffee every day, and I would recommend it to others. (Posted on 9/5/2016)
Close to perfectionReview by Brian
I had almost given up on home drip Brewers until I found the Oxo. My previous brewer (Bonavita BV1800) would occasionally overflow the brew basket, which would be 15 minutes of cleanup. The last time it happened I unplugged the thing and started using a French Press which I did for the past year. But I was getting sick of making 2 presses on some mornings, I really just wanted automatic coffee. The Oxo is very intelligently designed. The carafe is sturdy, the spout pours well. The brew through lid is simple and easy to clean. I love the clearly marked water reservoir. Access to the shower head etc is fantastic. The shower head cover is removable and simple to clean. A pain point on the Bonavita was trying to clean the shower head which would always be covered in grounds, When brewing the unit is very quiet. Beautiful design, easy to program, great cup of drip coffee. (Posted on 4/1/2016)
Winner OXO BrainReview by Gergely
Most importantly, this coffee maker makes great coffee. I've used technivorm moccamasters and a bonavita and I think they all make great coffee equally well.

This OXO machine is well made. Nothing about the design is fussy. The carafe is very well made and never dribbles. All of it is very simple to clean.

Despite only having one button, there are several features of the display including: a clock with timer so you can set it the night before; a 2-4 cup or 5-9 cup setting; and the display turns red if the carafe is not properly in place. If you are a purist you may never set the timer the night before, but it is useful in my house.

The design is very attractive. It looks great, which is a bonus because I did not consider this when deciding on which maker to purchase.

I would not shell out the extra $ for the technivorm moccamaster because I do not think the coffee is any better. This model is the way to go. (Posted on 2/12/2016)
