FAQs
Look for adjustable brewing temperature, a pre-infusion or bloom setting, and programmable brew controls. These features let you tailor the brewing process to different beans and roast levels. Check whether the brewer uses flat-bottom or cone-shaped filters, and choose controls that fit how hands-on you want to be.
Start with a medium grind, then follow your brewer’s guidance for its filter style. Cone-shaped filters often call for a slightly finer grind than flat-bottom baskets. A burr grinder gives you consistent grounds and precise adjustments when you want to fine-tune your next brew.
A bloom setting briefly wets the grounds before the main brewing cycle. This pause lets freshly ground coffee release carbon dioxide before more water flows through the coffee bed. Some specialty coffee brewers let you adjust the bloom time, while others include a preset pause.
Set the clock, select your brew preferences, and schedule the start time according to the brewer’s manual. Add water, a filter, and ground coffee before the scheduled cycle. If you prefer grinding immediately before brewing, save your preferred settings and start the brewer manually instead.
Discard used grounds and rinse the filter basket and carafe after brewing. Wash removable parts as directed by the manufacturer, and wipe away coffee residue regularly. Descale on the recommended schedule using an approved descaling product, then complete the specified rinse cycles. Coffee residue cleaning and descaling are separate tasks, so include both in your maintenance routine.
