FAQs
A semi-automatic espresso machine handles water heating and brewing pressure while you grind, dose, and tamp the coffee. You start the shot using the machine’s controls. Depending on the machine, you’ll stop brewing manually or use a programmable setting.
Compare temperature controls, boiler configuration, steam wand design, and programmable shot settings. Single-boiler machines typically switch between brewing and steaming, while dual-boiler machines manage those tasks separately. Also consider whether you prefer a built-in grinder or a standalone grinder.
You’ll need an espresso-capable grinder unless the machine includes one. Look for a burr grinder with fine grind adjustments for dialing in espresso. A standalone grinder gives you independent control over your grinding setup, while an integrated grinder combines grinding and brewing in one machine.
If your machine has a steam wand, activate its steam function and purge the wand before use. Position the tip near the milk’s surface to introduce air, then lower it slightly to create a rolling motion. After steaming, wipe and purge the wand. Follow your machine’s instructions for switching between brewing and steaming.
Clean the portafilter and filter basket, wipe the group head area, and empty the drip tray regularly. Wipe and purge the steam wand after each use. Follow the manufacturer’s schedule for deeper cleaning and descaling, and backflush only if your machine supports it.
