Bottomless Portafilters For Smooth Extraction

FAQs
A bottomless portafilter, also called a naked portafilter, has an open underside that leaves the filter basket exposed. Unlike a spouted portafilter, it lets you watch espresso emerge directly from the basket during extraction.
Start with a clean, dry filter basket. Weigh your ground coffee, distribute it evenly, and tamp on a level surface. Brush loose grounds off the basket rim before locking the portafilter into your espresso machine and starting your shot.
A coffee scale tracks your dose and espresso yield, while a dosing funnel helps contain grounds during preparation. A needle distribution tool helps break up clumps before tamping. A tamper and tamping mat round out a practical home espresso setup.
Center your cup beneath the filter basket rather than beneath a spout. Leave room to see the underside of the basket without letting the cup touch it. If you use a coffee scale, place the cup on the scale and tare it before brewing.
Knock out the spent puck and rinse away remaining grounds after each session. Remove the basket regularly to clean coffee oils from its surfaces and the portafilter body. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for detergent cleaning, and avoid soaking handles unless the manufacturer permits it.
