FAQs
An espresso distribution tool is a puck-preparation accessory used to arrange ground coffee in a portafilter basket before tamping. Common styles include needle tools, which stir the grounds, and rotating levelers, which sweep across the coffee bed.
A WDT tool—short for Weiss Distribution Technique tool—uses needles to stir through the ground coffee. A rotating distributor rests on the portafilter rim and uses a shaped base to move grounds across the surface. They involve different motions and work at different depths in the coffee bed.
Start with freshly ground coffee in your portafilter basket. Insert the needles into the grounds and make gentle, small circles throughout the coffee bed, gradually working toward the surface. Finish with a light pass across the top, then remove the tool and tamp. A dosing funnel can help keep grounds contained while you stir.
Use your distribution tool before tamping, while the grounds are still loose. A typical workflow is to grind, distribute, tamp, and brew. Distribution arranges the loose grounds; tamping compresses them into a puck. If you use both a needle tool and a rotating leveler, use the needle tool first.
Brush away loose grounds after each session, paying attention to the needles or the underside of the leveler. For deeper cleaning, follow the manufacturer's care instructions, since materials and handle construction vary. If washing is permitted, let the tool dry completely before using it again.
